RE: All About Handwriting
lag:
Just to share : I have a new engineer in my team. Very smart guy, pick things up quickly..was from a good school. But the problem is his handwriting is so horrible that no one is able to read what he writes. We use pc alot nowadays but some things still need to be hand written. It is very irriating for the whole team trying to figure out what he is writing and it also reflects very badly on him when big boss sees his handwriting.
I don't expect my kids to have super gd handwriting but at least something that people can read and understand.
Yes, I agree with you about at least having legible handwriting. Last time I had a female classmate with very bad handwriting, and it gets worse during exam when she had to rush in her writing. End up, the teacher could not decipher anything she wrote for the last page of her essay and the teacher just crossed the whole page out. She was just marked based on 2/3 of her essay. She scored badly for her English paper, partly because of her poor handwriting. Also, it doesn't really look good. Like you see a girl, so pretty and clever, but when she writes, it's so untidy that it ruins your first impression of her. Anyway, best to let your children practice good handwriting. In Singapore where a lot of things still go by grades, you won't want your children to risk getting bad grades because the marker is fed-up with deciphering the handwriting. Remember, a teacher has to mark a lot of papers, especially during major exams. The teacher won't have so much time to sit down just to slowly decipher one paper so he/she can mark it. -
RE: Preparing For O-Levels

I am stressed and would appreciate some advice please. In what way can one tell one's son to take his studies seriously? I have encouraged, pleaded, scolded my son but he seems to not be too concerned, even saying that he knows he has been lazy! He did ok in his first 2 years of sec school but since last year his grades have been falling. He spends too much times on computer games during holidays (i do not allow computer on school weekdays) and i can only control him when i am at home. When he does not get the computer he goes to his phone to watch videos. I am at a loss as what else to do to get him to take his studies seriously. I know he's capable of doing well enough if he works hard, but he seems to not care. How else can i encourage him? Should i bring him to any motivational seminars? Are they any?
Can try Adam Khoo or Ernest Wong. However, it takes 2 hands to clap. When come to such situation, no harm trying.
I think there's no harm letting your son attend motivational talks too. It might help. But personally, I feel that such motivation/inspiration after the talks only last for a short while unless your son does his part in implementing change in the way he does things and plan his studies. Maybe you can sit down and have a good talk with him, try treating him as a young adult, tell him that he is responsible for his studies and his future. Weigh the consequences out for him so he can understand it better. Treating him as young adult might help, because at this age, a lot of teens are rebellious. The more you control, the more they rebel. Maybe can talk about your expectations of him, and his expectations, and then work out a solution to compromise between studies and play time. -

RE: Preparing For O-Levels
By the way, if any parent is interested in English crash course for O-levels, can pm me and I’ll share with you more. My girl actually found the English crash course on her own after hearing it from her friend who had attended the previous sessions. Actually, I am not very confident that a crash course would be beneficial for my girl, but my girl insisted on trying so I let her sign up. After the sessions, she told me that she and her friends all enjoyed the sessions. From what I heard, they did learn some strategies in tackling the English papers. I just hope that the money paid is worthwhile and it will let my girl score better as she is more confident and motivated now.

RE: Preparing For O-Levels
I heard that my nephew also did badly for his O-level Chinese… but I don’t know if it’s due to the difficulty of the paper. My nephew’s Chinese has always been poor, so that’s probably the reason he failed… Heard that he has to retake again.

RE: All About Flu and Cough
I can’t remember where I heard it from, but I remember someone saying that using those aroma diffuser is not good. Smelling too much of perfume, essential oils, those strong artificial smells etc. can cause nose cancer. Don’t know how true is that, but I decided to play safe and stopped using my aroma diffuser already.

RE: What is your breakfast?
Had breadtalk bread - cheese sausage bread + tuna bread - for breakfast. The prices have shot up again since the last time I bought bread from breadtalk for breakfast. So expensive!
