RE: Hwa Chong Institution (High School)
Ha, exactly … I was kinda shocked on how much they converse in english … my son’s P6 chinese teacher too thinks that my son should not go into HCI because she doesnt think he can cope (hinted to me) … I think teachers from other do not understand much of the school as we thought … if your son is enjoying HCL and can cope, then do consider … there are some who did not do HCL in P6 and considered their chinese pulling their marks down did struggle but there are also other affecting reasons.[/quote]
My boy got a WL. We are looking to the DSA symposium to know about about HCI. Our worries and sentiments seeking advices have concluded that all boiled down to if the kid is not competent in Chinese, better don’t take up the offer as the kid will suffer ;( I am not sure if this symposium will highlight our worries. Especially the new principal who are from MOE, chinese division so will place even more emphasis on Chinese or resulted in boys penalised for not doing well in Chinese? (no offence, just thinking aloud). My boy was so looking forward to get his converted initially as he fell in love with the school during DSA interviews but after the more we asked around, he is very frightened and scared now to put HCI as 1st choice.
May I ask how HCI support the weaker kids in HCL or any other subjects? When will HCI intervene or it is up to parents to sign up external tuition?
Many thanks -
RE: Hwa Chong Institution (High School)
Will the child be retain if there is a fail in one of the subjects in year end examination or will he still be allowed to move on to next grade, eg. sec1 to sec 2 or sec 2 to sec 3? Is there anyone who dont make it to Year 5 or JC1?
I have heard that this school has got 1-2 O level classes, but any idea at which level will the boy be put into this class? -
RE: IP, IB vs A Levels
Hello to all,
My child is in P6 this year and gone for DSA, ended up with 2 WL which we would need to decide in end Oct. One school leading to IB and another school leading to A levels.
For the IB school, he is from the affliliated primary school, thus the familiar school culture and most friends will be there (since this sec school offers O level track too). I would like to find out about how the kid is assessed in IB program, what I known is that the IB child results will be based on multiple project works and should the child be unlucky to have uncooperative team members, the team grade will suffer. Of course, the IB course is more holistic, smaller class size? and scoring marks are spread-out. The IB program in Singapore produces higher average students compared to worldwide, thus the IB graduate will get into better degree courses compared to A level graduate? Lastly, if the child fare badly in IB program, will he get converted to O level program?
For the A level school, it is top-notched IP school in Singapore, with strong focus in Chinese. So technically, higher-chinese for 4 years only if the child can fulfill certain criteria. Child is taking normal chinese, current Pri school's focus MT as 2nd language and child's worst subject. However, child fell in love with the school (during the open house, DSA interviews) and would like to join one of the CCA offered. I heard that A level program is more strict and very rigid. Of course, the high stake A level examination, as like PSLE. Will the child be retain if there is a fail in one of the subjects or still be allowed to move on to next grade? I have heard that this school has got 1-2 O level classes, but at which level the child is being put into this class, I am not sure.
Child is vocal, very pro-active child and strive in competitive environment. We allow the space to develop the child's learning and explore interest, so academic scores are not the utmost importance. A happy and contented child is Ultimately, we hope to find the right fit for our child.
No offence if I have wrote wrongly in comparing between IB and A, I hope that we will able to guide child to make a logical, informed choice that will impact the child's life next 6 years. Your kind advice is greatly appreciated. -
RE: DSA 2017
Thanks Esteema and SnSn, may I ask if my child's Sch A WL will be at disadvantage compared to another child who put in Sch A WL as choice#1 although the ranking (of course nobody except the school know the ranking) is lower than my child?
I do not wish to lose the chance as Sch B cohort size is too small; there is a high risk of not able to convert to CO.
Afterall, both are good schools
Thanks again. -
RE: DSA 2017
Hi,
Need advice on 2 waiting list.
Sch A
WL number revealed to parents, school said if you put in 1st choice, Good chance of getting in.
Sch B
WL number not revealed. Very small dsa number. Child preferred school
If we put in
1. Sch B
2. Sch A
If #1 not converted to CO, then we will lose the WL for sch A?
How does 2 WLs work? -

\"You can ask your DS's form teacher for an estimated t-score if you need to decide whether to accept RI's CO or not. This is jmho. Please don't :torchme: me\"
I agreed with you... not just RI but any school(s) that offer CO; to apply is 1 thing but to accept the school that our kid will be in there for the next 4 or 6 years will be an important consideration. Not just whether the school is good, but whether the kid will fit in and cope with the academics (especially those that got in via sports). -
