Jakaranda,

What is the highest score for your school’s mainstream student? Any difference in performance between your school’s TAG class students and those from the top mainstream class? Heard that students from TAG did better than those from GEP in the past. Is this true?

      parent111:
My son has been offered following Thrid Language - 09-Malay (Special Proogramme), 10-Chinese (Special Proogramme), 56-Arabic, 58-Bahasa Indonesia, 06-French, 08-German. As we have only one kid and no previous experience with Secondary Schools. I need your advise - should we choose any third language for him, any benefits of third language. Your feedback/response is highly appreciated.

      Parent111,

I am a supporter of third languages, having done it myself upto JC. Knowing a third language is like having an extra pair of ears and eyes and I benefitted greatly from the immersion to Japan. I strongly encouraged my son to take up Malay as it is offered in his school i.e. no travelling to language centre and given the emergence of Malaysia and Indonesia in SEA. He did it for two years but has decided to quit given the heavy workload next year and the fact that he has lost interest in the subject. He did not have a good Malay teacher this year and also had to skip several classes due to CCA commitments. The IP program is heavy and his active involvement in CCA and Council work made it really hard for him to spare half an hour to an hour each day required to practise the language.

I would say go for it if your DS is prepared to spend time on it and can afford the time or else it will be time and efforts wasted especially if he has to travel to the language centre once a week. Most students will quit by third or fourth term in year one, especially if they are not coping well.

Is your DS transferring to HCI from another school? Why are there 10 subjects for sec 1?

      PiggyLalala:
Thanks. So the system is different fr RI. RI uses GPA. Max GPA is 4.0, for mark above 80. So wat is yr view on HCI, the pupils as well as the trs? Is it stressful?

It can be stressful and kids work till quite late at night on projects, independent studies work, homework etc.

Does it follow the normal sec sch MSG? B3 = 65 marks and above.
All Sec 1&2 students take a total of 6 subjects (exclude those with third language and Art Elective program). A student will receive 1 point for scores 75 and above; 2 points for scores between 70-74 and so on. Add all the points for the 6 subjects and divide the total by 6 to derive the MSG. Yes, 65 to 69 is a B3 like all other schools.
Wat is the raw score for MSG 3.0?

    • RE: Hwa Chong Institution (High School)

School just informed that promotion criteria for Sec 2 is MSG<3.0 instead of MSG<4.0. Anyone who scores  MSG>3.0 will go to \"Structured\" IP. This is causing a lot of distress to Sec 2 students now. They should have been informed of the promotional criteria well below their EoY exams and not now when results for all subjects have been released.

Heard from DS that there are four comprehension passages. Time is tight and could barely finish.
