    • RE: Achieving good grades in P5 & P6

Thanks "Chenlaoshi" for your advice. Actually I find my son’s Chinese is very weak. Even though he is P4 now. But I think his level is P2. He seldom speak Chinese and every time I tried to switch to Chinese cartoon / TV shows, he got so upset. I really at my wits end. He doesn’t seemed to care about his Chinese Grade too. Hope the new chinese tuition centre can help. But I also think 1 week once is not possible to create miracles.

Very thankful for the valuable advices. I left very little time to brush up his Chinese. I also just enrolled him in Tien Hsia hopefully this tuition centre can help him score at least 70% for his PSLE Chinese. Felt very anxious now because I realised AL banding can pull down his overall grades a lot. Just hope he can make it for Express stream in Secondary school.

Another friend, her child was scoring quite well for her Chinese (95%). But her other subjects are average (around 65% to 70%). This is why mothers are so stressful. Have to handle work stress and academic stress.

    • RE: Achieving good grades in P5 & P6

Thanks for the mummies’ advice here. Maybe I should send him for a more reputable tuition centre, hopefully can improve all his grades. Yes, he is under the new PSLE score. I’m not so sure how it will work. But from the report book, I saw his English - 1 pt (90%), Science - 1 pt (85%), Math - 1 pt (94%), Chinese - 4 pt (44%). Yes, I know his Chinese is going to pull down his score. Worried he not able to enter a better secondary school.

I also worried he may not be able to maintain 85%-90% scoring in P5 as I heard many horror stories that grades going to drop by 20% to 30% in P5. But based on my sister in law children, her kids from P1-P5, all can get awards every year. Maybe it’s really based on the children’s aptitude & attitude like what "cheerygal" said.

    • RE: Achieving good grades in P5 & P6

      Hi dear mummies,

May I ask how your child achieve good grades in P5 & P6?

I realised many of my child’s schoolmates who usually get good grades are mothers who are not working full time. Is this a secret of helping the child to stay disciplined and achieve good grades?

My child is quite okay from P1 to P4. He never gotten any awards from school and Edusave. Cos my sister-in-law and closed friends children always got awards either from the school and every year they get awards from Edusave. They are full time mothers. I felt discouraged internally even though I never openly pressure and demand my child to score very well.

Though he score quite well in his Math / English / Science (Band 1 - 85% to 90%). Only Chinese is Band 4. But I worried his results may continue to drop further when he progress to P5. Should I quit my job to help him in his studies? Actually I did send him for tuitions this year ($150 for 3 subjects) but I think these tuitions may not be enough to help him improve in his academic results in P5.

How do the mummies help your children to consistently score well for all the subjects? Can you share your advice here?

    • RE: Comparing Math Enrichment Programmes

Anyone has tried this Math Tuition centre called \"Learning Out of the Box\" based in AMK? I find this tuition centre is rather shady in selling their programme and their books. I went to attend one of the sessions to see how they can \"unlocked\" the minds of the kids to become expert in Math. They oversell their programme which make the MOE teachers are not doing their job to teach the kids. Like they are the only ones in the market which has the \"secrets\" to unlocked the children's mind. I find this is overstretched. Their methods are exactly just like model drawing which are the framework which MOE schools have been drilling. Duh. They make it sound like their method is the \"revolutionary\" secrets that MOE teachers didn't process. If this is the case, they can apply for the Nobel prize award for Math Genius.

And their books, they market until that their books can do wonders that even Vice Principal of one of the primary schools are buying their books to teach their students. I find this is really exaggerating. I don't believe primary school resources need a \"non professionally trained\" & \"not much experience in teaching\" tutor to guide the school in teaching Math. This is too far-fetched. If you going into their website \"https://www.learningoutofthebox.org/shop\", to browse their books. There is this constant \"notifications\" that show the browser that someone just bought the book online. Wow, their Math books are selling like hot-cakes compared to the bookstores which are selling more stuffs other than Math books. This show they are quite shady in promoting their services & book.

Actually their programme & books are not cheap. For 5 button badges - they are selling at $29. A P5 guidebook, selling at $35. What type of guidebook can be so expensive? If the contents are really revolutionary, yes, I don't mind buying. But their contents in my observation, it's just normal challenging math questions & solutions which can be found in other good assessment books available at bookstores which is selling at most $13?

I have nothing against this tuition centre \"Learning out of the box\". But as I observed the way the things are being market and \"non-proven\" testimony from the MOE school, I just hope the parents will be more vigilant with their hard-earned money and be wise in choosing the right tuition centre or tutor.

I don't doubt the owner has a passion in teaching math and imparting passion to the students he teach. But in order to get more business, some of the ways they promoted their business I find it's is quite \"unethical\" in my own personal opinion. This is what I feel.

How about other parents who have tried this centre \"Learning out of the Box\"? Any input?

    • RE: Le Xue Education 乐学

I also agreed with the above parents. The 3R is super expensive and totally not effective for my child. My child is quite poor in Mandarin so I was initially convinced by her sales tactics and signed my child for 1st term. They keep drilling idioms which is not practical for a child with poor Mandarin skill. End up no improvements and 1 month before the term ends, the admin staff ask for 2nd term payment which was a total turn off. Looks like this centre is money minded. I withdrawn my child after the 1st term. 😞

      yippie131:
My gal with eduKate since last year Dec, i would say only their english which taught by the principal is good, other than that their math and science are taught by uni or poly students using assessment book only.

I agreed. The subjects are are taught by students using assessment books. Sent my child for almost 9 months. No improvements. No feedback from the tutors on the child's weakness. I should have gone to a more reputable tuition centres like JustEdu, Mavis or MindStretcher.
