Technically viable. It’s the address in NRIC that eventually determines the 2B schools.

1) Complete 2 years of active community service as an EM at her current RC.
2) Move to new address at different GRC before child's P1 registration.
3) Apply for PA letter of endorsement after moving, so that the letter of endorsement reflects the new GRC and NRIC address.
4) Apply in Phase 2B at this new GRC.

Yes, it means the number of applicants staying within 1km is more than the vacancies for that phase, so those staying beyond 1km will not be considered.

EDIT: Sorry, just read that your registration is next year. So you're good to go, you just need to keep the school informed when you move to another place within 1km.

Hi everyone, just a quick check: is it a standard practice for the school to call everyone who applied under 2B for supporting documents? Or do they start by calling those under 1km first?


Just curious, because I’m in a group chat, and some parents received calls, while others didn’t. I figure they will call everyone eventually, but I’m not sure.

Not sure if this has been said before, but I would like to share a general observation. It seems, in the spirit of helping parents make a (relatively) informed decision, MOE personnel have been providing updated numbers on the MOE website at the end of day 1 of every phase. So for instance, for Phase 2A(2), there was an update at the end of the day on 14th July. After that, the next update at the end of day 2 comes a few days later, simply because the phase ends at after day 2 anyway, so there's no hurry.


If that holds for the rest of the registration phase, parents applying in 2B and who are deliberating between schools, can expect an update of numbers at the end of day 1 on 23rd July. They can then still proceed to submit their 2B application on the night of 23rd July, or on 24th July till 4:30pm.

Still better than nothing, for those who work on updates all the best, everyone!

MOE's website, as well as the FAQ section, both state that \"a child who gains priority admission through their distance category is required to reside at the address used for registration for at least 30 months from the start of the P1 Registration Exercise on 1 July 2020\". So whether you get in via balloting at 2B or 2C, the address used for balloting must be reflected on the parents NRIC as of 1 July 2020. Note that this is not a move-in date, but an official change of address on the NRIC (at police post, ICA, etc), which is what MOE uses as address criteria.

So if you were to apply for one school in 2B, then change address in mid July to apply for another school in 2C, the date reflected on the sticker at the back of your NRIC would be mid July, not 1 July, which doesn't fulfill the balloting home address criteria. Thus, it is possible your old 2B address would come into play during balloting instead, and that would affect your 2C chances at the school you are targeting.

It's best to stick with one address and work on a strategy accordingly, based on the above. I hope this helps. Cheers.

Ideally, you move before applying for the letter, so that the address listed on both the PA letter and the NRICs are the same, and things are a lot clearer. Still, I don't think that's an issue. The MOE website states that \"The address used for P1 registration should be the parents' official residential address as reflected on the NRICs\". This, coupled with the PA letter stating a GRL can apply for any school in the GRC, should cover for situations where parents move closer to a school in the same GRC before registration.

Im keen to enrol my girl as there is affiliation, though for 2026 PSLE, the scores are changed. RGPS has no affiliation and MGS affiliation for MGS Sec is beneficial to her. I am unfamiliar with MGS school culture. But as an old girl RGPS, I find RGPS to be highly stressful and competitive, not to mention current distance is a headache.

I am considering trying out 2C MGS, forgoing RGPS. Can anyone throw in any advice for me?

Usually there's balloting for MGS <1km, so if you're within that distance and don't mind some risk, you can give it a try. Otherwise, I would consider the security of an virtually guaranteed place at RGPS in 2A over the uncertainty of 2C MGS. Also, culturally there isn't a great deal to choose from between the two, they are both good schools, and parents can help moderate any stress levels with their own kids, regardless of external pressures. Affiliation is also slightly overrated, imo. Also, just wondering, if MGS is close to your place, RGPS shouldn't be that far off, right?
