Just like to introduce a book to you guys.

It’s called The Singapore Model Method for learning Mathematics.
      Published by MOE thru EPB.
Got it at the Popular fair for around $27.

I found that by referring to the working examples, one is able to solve the problem sums for my son.
He is only in P4 GEP but the sums he has to do are classified under the P6 in the book.

the jt english/SS on Family English Usage is marked by both sbjt teachers. I suspect the marks apply to both English n SS scores but i'm not sure abt the apportionment of the marks. All i can remember is tt there was quite a bit of re-drafting.

      Yeah that's the one.
It's due about the same time as the family tree project.
During briefing at the beginning of the year, the teaches seem to emphasize more on the family tree project.
So is the language usage/communication project important too ?

Just to check the family tree project is the main project for ss for common test 1 right ?

Cos my son has another project on communications/language which is a joint english/ss project that is due about the same thime as the family tree project.

HCF and LCM are taught in secondary one. The first common test 1 are normally divided in 2 parts. Part 1 for the investigation and part 2 the normal main stream questions at a higher level. Next term, they will be learning median, average and mean @ secondary 2 level. Remember you still have the Social Study to read. The year end paper for social study is not that easy too.

      Thanks for the info.
This year the mainstream question paper will be held first before the investigations.
For social studies the main problem he is facing now is writing project proposals, methodology etc. All the rigid stuff that we loath even as an adult in the working world.

      Hi ngbrdad,

Ya. They will be given past year test paper for practice by their teachers before the SAs.

The type of questions you son may face for English are about the same level as secondary one, maths of P5/6 level other than the investigation and the HCF and LCM at secondary level. Science also about P5/6 level.
      Pardon my ignorance here.
Do you mean HCF and LCM are normally only taught at secondary level ? Or are they learning a more difficult syllabus in these ?

From what I can see from their timetable for common test 1, math is being held very early in early April while the rest of the papers are all in May.

Anyone know whether there is past year GEP test papers for sale ?

Like those past year test papers for top schools being sold all over the island ?
Really have no clue what sort of questions my son will face when he sits for his first GEP common test.

Saw an ad previouslly be an ex GEP teacher who said he has such paper for sale.
However when i contacted him, he only has the test paper for the GEP screening tests, but not the test papers for common tests in GEP.
According to him, GEP students will be given the past years test papers for practice by the teaches later in the year.

Can parents who have kids in GEP comfirm this ?

This is the question in my son's math worksheet :

Mrs Chan has some sweets to be given to her pupils.
If she gives each pupil 5 sweets, she will have 61 sweets left.
If she gives each pupil 8 sweets, she will need 2 more sweets.
How many pupils does Mrs Chan have ?

I used algebra and get the answer as 21

Is there any other solution ?

The solution provided seems to be using stacking diagram and the working of (61+2) / 3 which to me looks like algebra equation .

Is algebra equation acceptable in P4 math ?

Personally, algebra equation is acceptable in all levels if the child understands what he is doing and is able to present his answers logically and clearing showing understanding.

Share with you my solution without the use of algebra.

      It's using the 'difference' concept.

      Difference of sweets (comparing between each pupil) = 8 - 5 = 3

      Difference of sweets (comparing all her pupils) = 61 + 2 = 63

      Therefore number of pupils = 63 divide by 3 = 21

Concept is a little abstract but with models, should help in the understanding. Hope it helps. 😎

Thanks I think that is what I'm looking for.
The solution provided by the teacher also looked similar.
If the child understand the concept this is definitely a simple way to solve such problem.

In PSLE, it is acceptable. Not sure about school's standard as it varies from school to school.
Thanks but this is algebric equation right ?
