RE: 2019 PSLE Discussions and Strategies (Children born in 2007)
Yes..Entirely plausible.
The gap between the top-end (26X, 27X) and mid-tier (23X, 24X) opened up compared to 2018 tying in with 2019 papers being considered harder and good students performing better.
This would mean (compared to 2018),
1) Student A (T-score: 259) might find it difficult to enter RGS (2018 COP 259) while
2) Student B (T-score: 240) might be able to find a place in Crescent Girls (2018 COP 242)

Breach of OSA or not?
I tend to think that the data is real, if we look at ESIS cutoff, for 2018’s batch, it was at 260 and there were around 1200+ students who scored 260 and higher whereas for this year the ESIS cutoff is at 261, which has also around 1200+ students scoring this and higher. Hmm... -

Does the COP for the following year capture the DSA students T-score from the prior year?
Successfully placed DSA students can't appeal and move onto another even if they meet the COP.6thisnthat9\" post_id=\"1950214\" time=\"1574907768\" user_id=\"145858:
Yes, we are talking about those with higher tscore e.g 259, 260 but didnt put the top schs as first choice. If there are substantial numbers, cop only known after posting exercise, these kids who appealed successfully will not be captured, hence the cop of their first choice schs mid tier will be higher than it should. Hence mid tier schools and below got affected by this unnatural outcome.
Appeals only allowed if the student fulfilled the COP. Dun think the appeals changed the COP statistics.Timmy21\" post_id=\"1950210\" time=\"1574907008\" user_id=\"122721:

If the sec 1 posting were to be done based on the algorithm of best results go to schs with higher past cop, then if top tiers cop are to raise, the mid tiers cop are to raise as well, by virtue of filling up places by order. Provided the DSA places out of total places are on par among the schools.
If there were substantial kids appealed successfully to higher cop schs last year, the cop of mid tiers are artificially fixed higher than they shld.
Hopefully the situation will go back to natural this yr.
However, yes last year the increase of DSA % also accounts for the outcome.
-

ESIS cutoff as of 2019 is 261 from MOE. From their website,
Quoted text:
The ESIS are awarded to Singaporean students who are in the top one-third of the total number of Secondary 1 students admitted to all IS, based on PSLE results (before bonus points).
It is also awarded to Primary 6 Gifted Education Programme (GEP) Singaporean students who meet the P6 GEP promotion criteria and are enrolled in the Integrated Programme (IP) of an IS at S1.
The quantum of the award is $2,400, or the annual school fees charged by the IS less the annual amount of school and standard miscellaneous fees paid by students in government/ government-aided schools, whichever is lower.Timmy21\" post_id=\"1950098\" time=\"1574859188\" user_id=\"122721:
MOE might not use number of indep sch places to compute ESIS. It might be computed like this:nite\" post_id=\"1950004\" time=\"1574834308\" user_id=\"64247:
Assumption. Top 2% to 3% of cohort.
You will never now as MOE doesn't reveal much. You can only assume.
Assume there are ~200 IS places per school on average. Total ~2400 across 12 schools.
Top 1/3 works out to ~800 who got 261 at least.
Total cohort ~40k PSLE (2019) students.
800/40000 works out to ~2%
I assumed ~1000 got 261 at least. So I arrived at 2.5%. No fixed numbers.

How u arrive at the top 2.5% for ESIS cutoff?
typically indep schools take in roughly top 10% of each cohort, and that T-score hovers around 250. By ranking the top 10% students who are SG citizens n drawing a line to demarcate the top 1/3 of this pool of students, the ESIS qualifying Tscore can be determined.
-
RE: 2019 PSLE Discussions and Strategies (Children born in 2007)
Can you share if you have the 10% third-language cutoff for PSLE 2019 Vs 2018?
Someone mentioned earlier it's 252 for both 2018 and 2019.
Another mentioned it was 250.
I called MOE to check but they said they don't have the numbers.Stevenlsf\" post_id=\"1949904\" time=\"1574820050\" user_id=\"69371:

Actual cut-off for ESIS scholarship is 261. No ifs and buts. Based on both Singaporean and non-Singaporean students. Works out to top ~2-2.5% of cohort (+/-).
You get scholarship if you are Singaporean, get >=261 and get into an IS school (IP or OP).
As for derivation, it's based on top 1/3 of eligible students to all IS schools (8 IS + NUSH, SST, SOTA, SSS).
I don't know the total number of available IS places (anyone?). Else can find total number of students eligible for IS. Also, we wouldn't know how many Singaporean students got it.
Idea is if we know the cut offs for the top 2% and 10% of cohort, we generally know how the cohort did and how to base our top 3 choices on.
MOE doesn't reveal these numbers. But, we can work backwards based on some assumptions.
so can I say 261 is just a reference, the actual cut off could be lower(excluding those non-Singaporean, those who entering non-IP school)? -

261 is derived based on the whole cohort eligible for IS based on earlier response.
Only Singaporean students in this band are eligible for ESIS scholarship if they enter IS.
Your Q earlier was on cutoff. And yes, student admitted to OP track are eligible as well as long as they fit the criteria and enter IS.
Thanks... I just wonder how 261 is derived. Is my understanding correct? If there are X number of places in the independent IP schools, the top X number of Singaporean students with the highest T-scores will be eligible for ESIS. Correct? -
ESIS is a scholarship towards IS.
Criteria is based on top 1/3 of students eligible for independent schools (not IP schools). Not based on being posted.
So, if there are 1800 IS places across Singapore, the cutoff is based on the top 600 students. Based on eligibility only and not on whether they take up the place, IP or non-IP, PR or not etc.
