My son will be going to RI from this new batch. Now looking at travelling options from Marine Parade - Car pool, School transport, bus+MRT.

I heard one way school bus is available from some parts of Singapore. Wonder if our area qualifies.

Congrats to your DS! I am sure he will enjoy himself tremendously there.

Take Bus 16 to Dakota MRT. From Dakota MRT take to Marymount MRT. It's very fast. My DS does that everyday up and down. I heard there is a private bus that plies the East but don't have the contact. You could ask the school.

      ngl2010:

Sorry I think it is a bit harsh not to accompany your child on his first day of school. I think you can skip all the school talks and PTMs but first day of school??? He is just a 12-years old in a new environment. Maybe men are really wired differently from women. 🤷

I agree wholeheartedly with ngl2010. Personally I would move mountains to take leave and be there with him on the first day of his sec school (RI or any other). What else is the family support system.
And not only for his support and help alone, i would also be damn curious to see and feel the place where my son would be spending the best part of his next 6 years. 😄

I think it is good to accompany on 22 Dec. There are things to purchase, forms to submit and it is a good time to see the campus and meet the various staff. However, on the first day of school, 2 Jan, I don't think there is a need. The boys are well looked after by the PSLs and their teachers. In fact, it might be quite awkward I think as they with their new friends. I doubt if the boys will want parents tagging along or peering into their classrooms like pre school  You will get a chance to go to RI for the Y1 investiture evening shortly after their camp - either the 2nd or 3rd week of school.

I bought my DS' uniform at Bibi Baba directly and early as he was accepted via DSA. There will be a huge crowd on 22 Dec at the orientation with everyone buying books and uniforms from Popular at the schoo. We wanted to avoid that. Good to go before 22 Dec to Bibi Baba when it is still quiet. Otherwise the queue there after the Sec 1 posting is also going to be really long as they are a uniform supplier for many primary and secondary schools other than RI.

Hope this helps. I am sure your DS will love RI. My DS will be in Y4 next year and it has been a fantastic experience for him over the last 3 years. He is really happy and so are we 😄

    • RE: Hwa Chong Institution (High School)

Yesterday, my ds showed me the packing list for sec 2 OBS camp next week. I have a few questions if you can help.

      1.Need to bring passport?
2.What kind of shoes for water activities? Need to be waterproof?
3.Need to bring 3 1.5 litres of drinking water?
4.Fork & spoon - are plastic ones ok? Will they be used for cooking?
5.Sleeping bag is optional. What will they sleep on if they do not bring one? On the floor?
6.Does NTUC sell cotton twine and solid fuel? If not, where can I buy them?

      TIA.

      Hi
      1) no need passport
      2) my DS used an old pair of track shoes that was going to be thrown away
      3) yes, 3 1.5l bottles for drinking
      4) fork & spoon can be plastic, thought the one I got for him was small, metalic and foldable for easier
      5) my DS brought a sleeping bag and a small travel pillow. i suggest you pack one for yours. my DS used the same sleeping bag since primary school for his camps
      6) we bought all the OBS stuff from NTUC Xtra. you can find everything there, including solid fuel, water bottles, mosquito patch etc etc

OBS was a fantastic experience for my DS and his friends. He had such a great time and funny stories to tell after that.

My friend’s DD DSA for RGS and NYGH, her DD 1st choice is RGS whereas my friend 1st choice is NYGH due to travelling distance. Her DD has CO from NYGH, failed at RGS selection test. She checked with her DD, she’s ok with NYGH too, so will accept NY CO. My friend told her DD, if base on last year’s T-score cut-off point, NYGH’s is higher than RGS’s, so it looks like she’s fated to enter the best and not the 2nd best (based on T-score cut-off point) and we laughed. [quote="Ikid"]

Actually, I think NYGH cut off only seems higher than other schools like RGS etc because they take in their affiliate girls at a lower cut off score. This means that the number of places they actually have for girls outside of their affiliate primary school is fewer than say, RGS, which has no affiliate primary school. It’s an issue of demand and supply, so I don’t think it is accurate to say that NYGH is better than RGS. Actually, NYGH has a wider t-score range since they take in their affiliate girls who meet the 250 cut off. If you look at last year’s PSLE book for secondary school selection, you will see that NYGH’s take in range was from 250-280 (affiliate to non-affiliate). RGS take in range is 263-280.

I think maybe fairer to say both schools are very good, each with their own strengths and culture. Most important is whether the girl is happy going there or not.

Should not react this way! 1st of all, u need to manage kid & your own expectation , with an open mind. Don't pass sweeping remarks on GEPPERS having an easier way, they are all not guaranteed a CO. to start off , the qualifying criteria, there are geppers below <80%, etc etc..which need to go thru the process and did not get CO, or some don't even get WL..

let's us be gracious… may the best deserving get it. Besides, there is always the S1 route, just encourage your DS to focus on PSLE and do well to get T-score above >265, that sure can get into HCI, RI or etc :grphug: ... :xedfingers: :rah rah:

As good parents, we want to educate and impart the good & correct values to our DC , being resilient, gracious and open-minded thinking…etc

      :goodpost:
Yes, let's be good role models! We must teach our DCs to have a WINNER'S mentality, not a whiner's! In life, not everything goes the way we want it but we can pick ourselves up and make the best of it 🕺
