      janet_lee88:

To me, percentile would possibly be able to offer the most details eg. Top 5% or 10%, 80-90%, 70-80%. But seriously, can we really really accept the truth gracefully?

Sure, top % will be happy, but may be accused of bragging. People are bound to compare & then start stressing their child to get into the next range. And for those in the lower range, they would be unhappy & some gets demoralized & rather not have that kind of info.....

There is no perfect system & whatever is implemented, there will be all sorts of comments. I will make the best of whatever is available cos a system/policy is not about me, it's for the majority.

I just want MOE to know that PSLE is a nightmare for many...not just the kids but the parents as well. If PSLE is to stay, tweak it.
      1) Get schools to teach adequately.
      2) Get schools to set papers to test what has been taught.
This way, the kids will not be demoralized after studying so hard.
Forget about setting prelims to 'wake up' the students.

Any revised system/policy is for the majority. When parents are able to feel that most schools are truly teaching, and the prelim standard is not set beyond PSLE standard, the reliance on tutors will be reduced.

      Be Contended,
Some people are born to compare. They can compare every damn thing.

Just had a chit-chat with ds about switching Chinese enrichment. He agreed to give it a try. But the tone in his voice and the softness of his reply tell me that he's quite reluctant about it; agreeing only because of the implicit pressure I must have unknowingly been putting on him. I know my son well. That being the case, I'll prefer the status quo.

Just received ds's oral test results from Berries today. Unsurprisingly, really mediocre grades. So while he's quite strong in hanzi, he can still learn a lot from Berries in terms of conversational skills and language expression.

To improve his oral, I have decided to communicate with ds using Chinese alone. Needless to say, all was quiet during dinner. My spoken Chinese all came out as 'one-piece, one-piece.' (must translate to Hokkien) šŸ˜†
hi Mark its great u listen to d inner voice of yr ds. Its tough right for us? On one hand we want to help make d best decision poss for our child but on d other hand we also want him/ her hv a say prior to makg any decision. I had to make a decision to let my elder one stop one of her enrichment last time, n d agreemt was she cld keep off tt enrichm as long she cld maintain her grades in dat related subj. She was ok until d followg yr n she herself agreed to sign up though in a diff centre. Now she is happier n self-driven in prepg for d class n doing hw for dat subj prior to each lesson. So dependg on d type of kids and their maturity level, its good to respect our kids' opinions n keep options open. I was glad that i gave my dd d option though my hub was v agst her droppg out of tt. N i was glad i had some \"terms\" laid out so she wld naturally experience d consequences of her actions n make her decision on her own.
Mark, hv u tried to let yr ds watch \"Ah Yo Yo Lao Shi\" cds? My elder dd loved it wen she was young n i tink its quite educational šŸ™‚

Haha, hope I don't go into an 'uncontrollable' mode when I see his papers later .. must stay šŸ†’
I hv to also remind myself to be calm when I see her papers when they are returned. No :spank: but :hugs: as these kids are really hvg a hard life I must say, compared to our carefree and careLess childhood.
But most likely I would be revisiting on how we shd go abt planning her daily revision come term 3. Ummm dunno how to fit in more fun time in her already packed schedule of supp class in school, cca, ballet. :scratchhead:

      Trapwithin:
      periwinklejoy:

Hi Uncle Trap, well said well said! I hv exactly the same sentiments but its hard to put into action as sometimes emotions and exasperation gets the \"better\" out of me. Its like going on a swing, forward-backwards, on how to ensure kids are given breathing space and lots of fun and sufficient free time to play, vs doing sufficient assessments to ensure they are not lagging in their studies. School std is rather high as without doing assessmts and having some sort of assistance at home, in addition to their school work, kids may tend to be in the below avg league in school. On one hand, I'm fine if my kids are in avg class, but on the other hand, I'm happy and they are happy when they are in the top few classes. But at the end of the day, its not us, its our kids that matter the most. Doing well academically in school is indeed not everything, the learning process, enjoying school life, tastes of trivial disappointments/ setbacks and picking up on the way, and building good friendships are just some of the the precious intangibles that the kids will bring with them throughout their childhood into their adult years... ... Putting all emphasis on just studies is indeed not fair to them šŸ˜“

So I also hv to constantly remind myself that I hv to give dem space to hv fun, and enough time to day dream, read and play. Thanks for your reminder Uncle Trap! šŸ˜„

 Uncle Trap is a term for your dd/ds, you must call Bro Trap like Sista Funx3, if not everyone think I very old šŸ˜‰

I understand how you feel. My dd went through quite an unhappy Term 1 this year. This is mainly due to the getting the engine to start after a long holiday and having a CNY in the middle of Term 1 didn't help her to maintain the momentum as well. She mentioned something to me casually one day that cause me to relook her life. She mentioned that she look forward to recess time everyday becasue she get to do what she want. After much thoughts and discussion with dw, I concluded that she needed some personal space. We started to give her a complete 1 hour \"do as you like\" time daily - half an hour in the morning and half an hour at night. Not that I am taskmaster, just that like many kids, my dd \"Space-out\" (Daydream) a lot and takes her time to do her stuff.

It helps not because she get this free time but physchologoically she was given the space she needed. She improves in your mood and things get back to normal again. So I concluded that she is probably burn-out.

So now I have a new slogan in life: \"Space out to prevent Burnout\" :imcool:

Uncle Trap Uncle Trap Uncle Trap Uncle Trap Uncle Trap.... :heresmyfish: Sounds like a mischievous child rite? Hee  Im a child at heart ...
      Ok dont :spank: me lah
Bro Trap, I hv to again agree with u \"Space out to prevent Burnout\"

      Hi JRLam,

I managed to read fr pg 1118 to the current page! Had bn having a hard time balancing catching up with rallies and coaching both kids :gloomy:
I think u asked P5 parents on this forum if Math was tough. Yes, my dd came back with a heavy heart after her math paper, she lamented on why Math papers in P5 is so tough! I think I contributed partly to her misery as I told her CA1 is a killer, SA1 wld be definitely much easier :xedfingers:
She had a tough time gettg ready for SA1, didn't managed to revise lower pri science šŸ˜“ as was too busy with revising P5 topics; did only a few Eng and Math test papers; did 2 science papers and some Chin OE compre. Insanely lack of time. And weekends were burnt out as we were out for activities, so that contributed to the lack of revision time.
She had wanted to practice Math but I told SA1 shd be ok so I asked her to focus on Science and Eng Syn and transfn and Chin OE.
How abt ds? Coped well with revision prior to exams?
