RE: Key changes to exams and assessments
zac's mum:
https://www.zaobao.com.sg/znews/singapore/story20190103-920877?xtor=CS2-8We are getting quite far off topic already, but just throwing in my agreement with Floppy. You gotta know where to look (not just in those rarefied CRA-populated top schools).
Recently I had to do some banking at TPY. HDB Hub. Was very impressed that the banks have hired young fresh grads with banking/finance qualifications, who can converse fluently in dialects and Mandarin, with those elderly folk who need basic help using the ATM, downloading epayment apps, etc etc. And happily answering all their questions with a friendly attitude. Accent definitely sounds Singaporean, not Malaysian.

RE: Compare RGS vs NYGH
php:
Just for info, there is strictly no bargaining if the girl can't meet the promotion criteria in NYGH ...
wah ! Now we understand why there is such a big difference in the numbers, between RGS vs. NYGH ( IP).phtthp:
here's the analysis based on personal stories, experiences and school P's sharing:
Approximate number of students not able to move to their respective IP JCs (NYGH -> HCI, RGS -> RI) per cohort each year:
NYGH- 23-25 (O level class) + 0-2 (exit/repeat) + 10-15 (Sec 4 IP fail to meet promotion criteria to HCI) = 33-42
RGS- 0-2 (exit/repeat)
Note1 on promotion criteria:
NYGH - to remain IP for Sec 1 to 3 = 60-64 (msg4); for Sec 4 to JC = 65-69 (msg3); the best L1R5 O level score from 2016 O level class was 15 (before discount from HCL/CCA)
RGS - for Sec 1-4 to JC = 50 (GPA 2.0)
Note2 on subject selection:
NYGH - to do triple science in Sec 3, need min 65-70 in Sec 2 (msg3); to continue to take at least 2 sciences in Sec 4, need min 60-64 in Sec 3 (msg4) otherwise can only take 1 science (chemistry)
RGS - no requirement, free to chooose as long as pass (50)
Both schools can be highly stressful: NYGH -> worry about whether able to meet min msg every year, RGS -> worry about whether able to cope in JC? How do the IP girls perform at A levels?
One should consider the fit of the child with the school's programmes and culture when choosing Sec schools, rather than the perception of how \"safe\" the schools seems to be
!
I feel that the Promotional criteria for NYGH (at end of Year 1 to Year 4), is too strict, demanding.
60 to 65 marks required (Y1 to Y4), and 65 to 70 marks required at end of Y4, are challenging, tall order ! If u mention 60 marks required for Promotional clearance, 60 is still ok, acceptable, because we are talking about Secondary level, in IP program, with 8 or 9 subjects to manage.
For RGS girls who failed Y4 (IP) Promotional exam, do they get \"auto-pushed\" up, into RI JC (1) ?
What is year-end Promotional criteria like, for RI (JC1) students moving up into RI (JC2) ? Is it very tough ?
How is Hwa Chong year-end Promotional criteria like, for Hwa Chong (JC1) pupils, moving up into Hwa Chong (JC2) ? Even more demanding, than that of RI ?
mommyNg, you are right ! I take back my words earlier that, safer to choose NYGH because of the presence of on-demand O-level track, to fall back upon. With such demanding Promotional criteria, from Y1 to Y4 (IP) in NYGH : not safe. In fact, after you showed us the figures, scary. But we truly appreciated the figures & your effort, which u had shown us. Now, we understand why it is so stressful, studying inside the Big 5 (plus NUS High, included too)
Actually, studying in an IP school is stressful, no matter which IP school one join. But this NYGH, exceptionally stressful ...
For e.g. at the end of Y2, if the girl obtains MSG 4.01 .... she will go to SIP programme i.e. O level track ... But if she performs well in Y3, she can go back to IP track ...
NY gals that take 9 or more subjects usually drop weaker subjects in S4 to boost MSG. Dropping is not easy but not impossible. Some transfer (rather than to NY O track) and some for poly. Without adding MOE SM1 entering at S3 and transfer-in (S1/S2/3), original NY S1 to HCI Y5 success rate maybe around 85-88%? RGS a better option as it allows gals to explore more outside of classroom? -
RE: COP 2018
\"In any case, it is moving towards what’s MOE wants - all schools are good schools, as the COP of top schools have been moderated and getting closer while the COP of lower tiered schools have increased.\"
My suspicion as well of revised policy to \"make all schools good schools\". NYGH with 264/265 doesn't fit in well.mommyNg:
I suppose the “high 250x” you are referring to must be 259 ++ (260, 261 or 262), as RGS COP is 259 this year. It is a bit weird if those scoring 262 or even 261 or 260 (inclusive of HCL) who had wanted NYGH did not choose NYGH, cos if it is only 2-3 points difference, I would be willing to try my luck if I were them. Perhaps as one of the KSP parents suggested, these girls may not have really wanted NYGH in the first place. Nothing wrong. It’s about personal preferences. Nothing to do with the school (before some parents get jumpy and defensiveImp75:
Agree totally.
1. Nyps enrolment drops about 10 girls
2. In my dd good neighbour school, only 1 is above 270 (compared to many in prior years) and much fewer >260 compared to prior years
3. Nygh only reduced its Dsa intake this year from 50 to 35 while most IP sch Arady implemented since last year
4. Many scores high 25x but feels no chance to get into nygh safely put RGS therefore there’s a record number of girls from dd sch going into RGS this year
).
I do agree it is likely to be due to a multitude of factors, the above plus other possible factors, such as new P in NYGH, new RGS campus, ill-informed strategy (“wasteful” thinking) and it is also possible that more high scoring girls decide to join other schools like NUS High, DHS, RVHS. A drop in DSA intake from 50% to 35% (which translates to about 60 slots) + an increase of 10 spots due to a drop in affiliation intake per se do not, statistical-speaking, lead to such a drastic 6-point drop. When RGS, RI, HCI cut their DSA intake last year (also about 60 slots) they dropped about 1-2 points. When MGS increased 1 more IB class in 2016/2017, their COP dropped 2 points. Anyway, I think the “market” would likely correct itself next year when people with mid-high 250s and low 260s (inclusive HCL) realised that they could try to put nygh as first choice if they are interested.
In any case, it is moving towards what’s MOE wants - all schools are good schools, as the COP of top schools have been moderated and getting closer while the COP of lower tiered schools have increased. Anyway, this PSLE t score COP debate will last only for another 2 years before the new AL system kicks in

RE: COP 2018
Not entirely correct. DSA not necessarily lower than 258. The 71 \"affiliated girls\" implies 71 from NYPS, doesn't mean all NYPS girls who got in NYGH are below 258. Anyways under performers supposedly progressively managed out before HCI. On this, IMO RGS is a better place for more holistic learning.
6thisnthat9:
Those dsa and affiliated girls will have lower scores than 258. These 258s will not be at the bottom then.
From last year, the drop is about 90 DSA places. My son was on WL and he decided to give it a go. We stared at the letter for a whole minute cos we couldn't believe he got in. We were told it's very hard this year. I had an older son that also did DSA and that was smooth sailing and so I was prepared for not getting in and in a way I was half hoping he will not get in.
I remember going to a mid tier sch open house, the P advised, better choose sch based on sch mean tscore not cop. For kids who are very motivated, ok to choose based on past cop. But this year, this school's cop is last year mean score!xjysg:
Just to share, HCI total intake 382. 118 admitted under DSA (30.9%). I believe it is a lower % than last year.
This year, many WLs in the Big 4 were not converted.
Verdict : never try, never know. Got it already, don't complain.
HCI used to have 12 classes but dropped 1 class in 2016; perhaps it may open back that class when the birth rate goes back up to a higher number in the next few years.
For NYGH, if the DSA places given is 35%, ie ~130 + 71 affiliated, what remains is 190 places. Hypothetically, perhaps just 30 good tscores girls decided to move onto other schools allowing 30 girls with 258 & about there who gamely give it a go... and so this batch of kangho families \"make history\".
To me, more importantly, is how your child will fit into the school; 1 consideration will be going in a lower tscore than most of those in the cohort. So, I do wish all the best to these kids and same to my own child. -
RE: All About Recreational Swimming
anybody has same experience on swim coach conducting his own swimming certificate (self-print) and collect $50 from parents every 2 months? swim test takes up 1 swim lesson slot.

RE: All About Recreational Swimming
Is it normal for swim coach to conduct his own swimming certificate (self-print) and collect $50 from parents every 2 months. Swim test every 2 months takes up 1 swim lesson which is $35.
What is the normal practice if it rains and pools is close? Refund or make-up class? Or its just parent's bad luck? :siao:
What is the normal practice if it rains, does your instructor message you about status of swim class OR you expected to check with him in-person at the pool?

RE: All About Pri 1 Registration for Foreigners & Phase 3
according a recent (15 Feb 2015) 新华社 (Xinhua News Agency - official press agency of Chinese Central Government) article, Chinese middlemen have abilities to \"facilitate acceptances\" into popular primary schools (\"特殊途径为其办理小一直入\"). If true, maybe nervous parents here can consider this route? wonder what SG authorities are doing on this?
