I am a mother of 2 kids. My kids have been changing their glasses very frequent due to the increment in their degree. I am wondering if OrthoK lenses, these night lenses will help slow down my kids myopia progression.
Any clinics to recommend? Any parents out there can share with me your good/ bad experience?
Thank you :?:
How old are your children? It is not a good sign but can be slowed down with ortho k lenses. Other methods include soft contact lens (special type), spectacles (we term them myopia control lenses as well, just that it is in glasses form) and also atropine drops (only doctors in eye clinics can prescribe them :?
Slow down - Definitely, reverse/stop completely - definitely not.
But taking measures to try and prevent is definitely a good step. Have a good Friday and weekend!
Thanks for sharing :salute: :salute: :salute: :salute:[/quote]Shoutout to @icechendol for providing me with detailed OrthoK information during the start of my journey. Here is an update for parents who are interested in getting OrthoK for their kids.
I began researching on OrthoK last year february, and received a lot of feedbacks from my friends and the forum. So I shortlisted 2 recommendations and I called them to enquire more about their pricing. Of cos this is what we parents are concerned about as well rite? So the 1st shop and 2nd shop pricing did not differ much... so we went to the 1st shop as it was nearer to my place.
1st shop experience: The optometrist were welcoming and provided us some info about OrthoK... he reassured us that OrthoK may not be able to correct my child's astig as it was too high :scared: but he reassured us that he will give us free glasses if the kids are unable to see clearly after using their lens. We trusted him and went ahead with trial lens fitting but my kids were very afraid maybe because its their first time? So the elder sister went ahead... but the younger sister did not dare to do it at all... In the end the elder sister said that the experience was okay not painful but uncomfortable. The lens was taken off by the optometrist after 30 minutes and he reassured us that the younger sister will be able to do it as well without trial fitting. We were hesitant ... and decided to go home and sleep over it before we go ahead with the lenses.
When we went home, I had a chat with my kids and the younger one is not keen at all. She is just too afraid. The elder one was okay but she said she did not like the atmosphere of the shop? I did not understand and called my friend who recommended me to the 2nd shortlisted place... and she advised me to give them a go as well...
2nd place experience: During the consultation, the optometrist was very friendly and knowledgeable. She look q young but the kids seem to like her a lot. She listed the possible options for my kids to control their myopia... and also clarified all my doubts and questions about OrthoK, like the safety and procedure. Becos of the prior experience at the 1st shop, my kids comfort and motivation to use the lens was my main concern. If they are unable to accept.. I will not force them and go for other options like myopia control spectacles.
So we gave OrthoK another go and surprisingly they went through a successful trial fitting that was painless and fast. The lens were taken out within 20 mins... then the optometrist showed us the changes that happened in the kids eyes after the trial... which was amusing!! My younger kid told me that it was like magic because she could see clearer after the trial haha. We were confident in their service and knowledge and my kids were also happy with the environment. So happy kids = Happy Mummy. Of course we proceeded with OrthoK right away...
There was a morning where the lens was missing in my younger child eye on a Sun morning.. n the clinic was not open. Since we are a patient there, they provided us a number to call when there is an emergency. Thankfully they responded to us right away and helped us with this crisis. In the end they taught us how to find the lens and we managed to remove it easily. Phheww..
I did not want to write a review so soon because we were still uncertain about the results, and so far we have been well taken care of so I have decided to post this today. It has been 1 year since they started and they are both very happy. We recently went for a follow up check and their myopia did not increase at all. My husband and I are very satisfied with the service and as you all know parents, during HBL alot of kids have myopia increase... and thankfully we started at the right time.
The kids also love going to the clinic as they always receive little toys and presents. So I would highly recommend parents to consider this place because this is not an optical shop, it is more like a clinic environment where you see experienced optometrists doing a good job.If any mummies are interested, you can pm me and I m happy to share with you the name of the practice. Happy new year to all~
