      Dear Helplessmum

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been having such a hard time and I do pray that things get better. Life is full of ups and downs and for many of us, more downs than ups. But we press on as there are people around us whom we love and depend on us. It’s hard but u’ve already come so far, well done and hang in there!

      Hi ImMeeMee

Many thanks for your input dear mummy, that’s really detailed and helpful!

Does that mean that I can actually be referred to an EIPIC centre by a developmental paediatrician from the private sector? May I ask which private medical centre and paediatrician did you bring your child to? At the moment Dr Janice Wong at Thomson Medical Centre seems to be the only developmental paediatrician I have been able to find in the private sector on the internet but am not sure if she’ll be able to refer for an EIPIC centre.

Am a bit lost as I just spoke to a friend who chose to send her child only for intensive ABA and once a week OT, as well as a mainstream preschool and no EIPIC at all… and she advised me to do the same. My understanding of what goes on in ABA therapy and at an EIPIC centre is only as much as can be found on the internet and can’t be used to draw a conclusion fairly at all. But from what I’ve read the EIPIC centre is the route most mummies take and seems to be effective and possibly more comprehensive at preparing the child for school and for life? Of course, it is also way more affordable than doing intensive ABA. However after speaking to my friend am unsure what step to take next… Doing both ABA and EIPIC is not really an option as ABA needs a minimum number of hours to be effective so if my child did both that would rule out the possibility of a mainstream preschool which I hear is really important as well. What do you think mummies?

Hi Double E, nugget and helplessmum

Thanks for the prompt replies! May I ask if you ladies remember what was involved during the assessment at kkh cdu? And also what therapy/lessons are involved at the eipic centres?

I think aside from her speech and motor delays, some autistic signs are that she doesn’t point to indicate what she wants and doesn’t respond to her name. It is too early to diagnose definitively though so in the meantime we’re going to start therapy first

      Thanks in advance again!

      Hi dear mummies

May I ask what is involved in the assessment at KKH CDU if your child may be autistic? Is the assessment done by a psychologist or a developmental paediatrician? Are there scans, blood tests etc or mainly just the assessment by a psychologist?

My 19 month old daughter may be autistic and at the recent routine 18 month old check at NUH, the paediatrician agreed that her speech and motor skills were slow and that she also showed soft signs of autism. He sent her for a thyroid screen which was normal, a hearing test which has been booked for later and an appointment with the NUH CDU for assessment.

As the NUH CDU has a waitlist, I brought her to a private psychologist who says it’s too early to diagnose her now but that yes she is showing some signs of autism. My husband and I are planning to send her to a private autistic centre for ABA. They have a psychologist who can assess her for autism.

I guess my concern is whether there is a need to send her to a paediatrician who specializes in child development such as those at KKH CDU, NUH CDU or a private clinic for a more comprehensive assessment to exclude/include other possible developmental or health issues? Hence would like to know what is involved in the assessment.

      Many thanks in advance!
