    • RE: GEP 2012 - Screening & Selection

I could not find much information on the P3 GEP screening test contents/format earlier (searched using some key words in these forums/google).

Sharing this info based on inputs from DS (Aug 2012 tests) before we both forget :–

      Maths: 1hr 30 mins.
      Section A:25 questions, all MCQ
Section B:25 questions, answers to be written in provided boxes in another sheet.
Most questions similar to school tests, 2 mark Qs.

      English: 1hr 15 mins.
Section A:25 questions, all MCQ - grammar, vocab, 2 MCQ compre.
Section B:25 questions, answers to be written in provided boxes in another sheet.
      - cloze with fill in the blanks (own words).
      - fill in the blanks.
      - punctuations, prepositions.

If any of the experienced parents can share the format of the round 2 format/content, it would be useful too.

      Thanks!

    • RE: Little Skool House

My little boy is the in a.m. playgroup (first steps) and there since Jan 2011. My older son was there at OCC LSH for four years before he went to primary school.

I continue to find the teachers caring and involved and my DS looks forward to school.
I suggest you spend sometime in the school/class, with the teachers to clarify any misconceptions you may have.

    • Sitcom recos?

Recently watched "Mind your language" series with my 8 year old. Mostly for nostalgia as I was not sure if he will understand or like it. He loved it, keeps watching bits and pieces and see him rolling with laughter!

Another sitcoms that I think he can relate to is "Under one roof"…

Any other recommendations? Its been a while since I followed TV shows (local or US). He doesn’t watch much TV either, so I’d rather he have a choice in case he wants to once in a while…

      TIA.

    • So little time?

      DS is now in P3.

Morning school routine has settled down by bringing forward sleep time to 9:00. But there seems to be so little "free" time. He loves to read books and wants to explore so many things now but we just don’t have time! Is his time crowded with classes or we just need better time planning? Every time we want to drop a class one of us (DH, DS, me) have some objections.

Mon: He is back by 1:30. Has lunch etc. Piano lessons at (home) 3:30-5:00. We don’t stress much about exams, in fact encourge the teacher and DS to explore non traditional pieces as well. He practices for about 30 mins atleast 3 times a week.
Tues: back by 1:30. Has lunch etc. Chinese lessons at (home) 2:30-4:00.
Wed-Fri: back by 4:00 (CCA and band competition practise at school).
Fri (5:00-6:00), Sun(10:30-11:30): Swimming (this is needed as he is asthmatic).
Sat: Tae-kwon-do for 2 hours (4-6 p.m.) (he really enjoys this and is at a higher belt now)
Everyday plays from 6:30-7:30 (outdoor). Dinner at 8.

He usually tries to finish homework 5:30-6:00. There is language homework almost everyday. Most subjects have some weekend home work.

Do appreciate comments from fellow parents. Thanks!

    • Keyboard training advice

My ds(8 years) started keyboard lessons at home 2 years ago. We were into it mainly as appreciation, so did not focus on any grades. This year the teacher said he is ready for grade 2 and had him enroll in the grade2 Trinity practicals, which he passed.

The teacher lets him have fun, teaches both keyboard and piano books and also helps to set music for other pieces that my sons wants to play occasionally (in community events etc.). However there is no peer pressure and I find DS does not push himself at all (sometimes only practices 1/2 hour before class), but enjoys the classes, will ask me to listen when he has done a piece really well etc.
Now DS is continuing and wants to do grade 3 next year.
      My questions are:
      * Should I have him continue the individual lessons, or will a group help?
      * Any opinions on Trinity Vs other exam boards? Do the popular schools (Yamaha, Christopheri) use the same exam board or how do they compare?

      Thanks much!

    • RE: Child - Teacher not getting along

Jedamum & Kiddo, thank you so much for taking your time to reply to this. You have given me some good ideas to work with my child. Will have a talk with him over the weekend and also try to monitor closely and hope things tide over for this year… Fingers crossed about teacher next year…

      Thanks again!
