RE: Want to ask about Kindle
nansk:
Absolutely! :)
Got my new Kindle. Works about the same like Kindle Paperwhite, except that there is no in-built light, so need read under bright light, just like book. Other than that, don't feel any difference at all. Oh.. it is a little bit thicker than KPW though, just slightly.raymondtkleong:
Got one (paperwhite) for my son last month and the whole family love it. Getting another one (non-paperwhite, just e-ink) now... on the way...

Please come back and share how you like it.
I have a basic Kindle 4 and although it works great, I am tempted to upgrade, either to the new basic Kindle or to the Paperwhite. Both come with a touchscreen. We already have a Paperwhite for my child and I would like to hear personal opinions of the new basic Kindle.
And Kindle allows me to adjust the font size... good for old man like me...
Can't compare with Kindle 4 since I don't have one. Sorry. -

Thank you for yr reply... I hv missed the Xmas sale.... Hope Amazon will hv another one soon... I am planning to get one.
For my 1st Kindle (Paperwhite), I purchased thru Lazada. The 2nd Kindle (Basic, and under Xmas promo - US$59), I purchased from Amazon directly. I have it shipped to an APO address. I am using comGateway for this instance. I used Borderlink before too. Generally, comGateway is cheaper. Note that shipment cost is by volumetric weight (i.e., size of the box) or actual weight, whichever is higher. And the first 0.5kg is the most expensive. Kindle is 1kg. So, I will combine the shipment with other things from elsewhere. For this instance, I also purchased GNC supplements. So still waiting it to be delivered to the same APO and packed and shipped together, to save the shipping cost.raymondtkleong:

US account? raymondtkleong, can share how much do u hv to pay for the shipping cost fr US to Sgp, which I presume u hv to arrange yourself? Can share how do u do this ? I am keen to get one but the non shipment fr Amazon to Sgp really put me off. I do hv a US account but so far have only been buying products that Amazon can ship directly to Sgp. Appreciate yr sharing....
And I use the APO address as my US address, hence the US account that allow me to download eBook from Amazon, for now at least.
Hope this helps.
Just saw that there is thread discussing about comGateway, Borderlinx and etc... You may want to check it out...

Find it better than reading the hardcopy book, which is heavy to bring around. And Kindle allows me to adjust the font size… good for old man like me…
As for buying book, I am using US account now. Still work so far, but heard that maybe blocked eventually… Let’s see…

RE: Should investing be left solely to men?
I (husband here) used to be the one doing all the investing stuffs, but managed to get my wife (SAHM) involved few years back. So now she does most of the investment thingy, but we can always discuss over dinner, or while I am driving. I find this arrangement is much better. First it free me up as she can do more study during her free time. Secondly, the investment made are mostly mutually agreed. So no argument if thing turned sour.

Anything good example I know of is one in charge of buying, the other in charge of selling. So, there is less emotion attachment to the investment.

RE: Self-employed: How do you manage your finances?
Thanks for sharing. Great that you’ve taken very good steps in your personal finance planning.
If you don’t mind, I would share a few of my thoughts here:
1. Personally, I never mix insurance with investment. They are totally different things. Of course, many use insurance as saving/investment purpose. That’s fine if you know what you’re doing & that fit your plan/strategy.
2. Critical Illness and Term Insurance are two different things. You have purchased CI, which is great. Term insurance, on the other hand, is the cheapest form of life insurance. Like what you stated, $300K for Life Insurance (I assumed is Whole Life plan that cover for life) is not enough. You can top it up with Term Insurance to have more coverage, but the limitation is only for certain tenure, so remember to get the renewable rider.
3. For Health Insurance, are you referring to Integrated MediShield Plan that provided by private insurers, and can be paid of using MediSave (except rider)?
Just my 2 cents.
Note that I am not insurance agent or financial advisor. I just quite into personal finance thingy, like you.

RE: Advice on Savings Plans
Personally, I never mix insurance with investment. They are totally different things. Of course, many _use_ insurance as saving/investment purpose. That's fine if you know what you're doing & that fit your plan/strategy. You got to get the concept/purpose right on what you're doing.
Recently, I came across an article that maybe useful for those who are comfortable with 3% return and looking for saving/investment plan for retirement purpose, and if you still trust the Singapore government. The basic idea is to 'invest' into CPF-SA, which give you at least 4% guaranteed (or rather risk-free). You can read the article here: http://singaporeanstocksinvestor.blogsp ... of-2k.html
One note on the recent POSB saving plan. The concept behind the 'investment' is good. However, the cost maybe much higher when compare with DIY approach. You can purchase ETF easily from SGX, and pay a much lower fee.

RE: budgeting - how?
I do my budgeting yearly, with some items fall under Monthly, some Yearly, some One-Off.

RE: How do you control your spending?
Basically, you have to live within the mean. There are 2 ways to this. One is control spending, and the other is increase your income. You should do both, esp. for younger ones where you can find many ways to increase your income. But controlling spending (i.e., spend less than your income) is equally important so that you can have saving that can be used for investment (i.e., let your money to earn more money - income).
I have friends who record every single expense detail, for many many years. I can’t do that. I find it too troublesome and too much work. I prefer cashless spending so that there is a record in the banking system and I can view them on the internet banking system.
Just my 2 cents.
