An example of PRs having priority over citizens (in a way):
De La Salle Primary school does not accept PVs, and I know of Catholic PRs who got in under Phase 2B whilst Singaporeans (non Catholics) don’t even have a chance at phase 2B!!

RE: Opinions of the Primary School Registration System
LOL...of course students get into primary schools does not depend on merit, a lot depends on luck....
I am not disputing that good schools produced good students, just added that every year these schools have top students because they have gifted programmes, and naturally top students will come from these schools..No??
Yes...if they imposed distance ruling many years ago, then, you won't see the same statistics you're seeing now at Nanyang.
How convenient, being labelled sour grapes, everytime we try to bring up some issues not in their favour    -

I don't believe the schools of today is the same as yesteryears. For one, I am very sure, Henry Park Primary School is not the same as it was during my time. Schools relocate, school syllabus has changed, education system has changed, Principals and Teachers have changed. However, one thing for sure, if I'm a former student of a lousy neighbourhood school, I will not bother to mention my primary school.red rhino
MOE has reasons not to impose distance on 2A. One of them I can think of is, ex-students have gone through the same sch and would know the requirements/standards thus could help their children transit smoothly and handle the requirements.
How many good pri students go on to good sec sch? A lot isn't it? MOE's objective is to churn out scholars to hold political posts.
I would assume you refer to schools with good academic results as good schools. Take a look at the list of top schools (in terms of academic results), these are all the schools with gifted programmes. These schools has the top students from all other schools, so, isn't it natural that they should produce the top students? Some so-called good schools will advise those with poorer results to either \"buck up\" or \"ship out\", so as to maintain the high academic results of the school, so, we will have to assume that students of these schools should make the grades and go on to good secondary schools.
I, for one do not agree to impose distance on 2A.
I agree with you that most people think of self first..... -
RE: Opinions of the Primary School Registration System
So, isn't it time to re-look at the phase 2A priority? By enforcing the distance priority rule, the people who uses this \"strategy\" will be reduced. Such that, most students from the school, stay close by, isn't what the MOE wanted to achieve as it keep emphasizing to parents to register in schools close by?
The prices of houses in the vicinity of the schools will be driven up? Hasn't this been happening for years already?
Of course, any changes to phase 2A will not go down well with those people who treat this \"privilege\" as their gifts to their descendants. So maybe, next time, before going into a serious relationship, the question to ask your future partner is, \"which former primary school do you come from\"? :P. -
RE: Opinions of the Primary School Registration System
Agree with Jedamum.
Actually, shouldn’t phase 2A be subjected to the same distance ruling? So, instead of giving priority to phase 2A, divide the remaining places after phase 1 equally amongst the phase 2A, 2B and 2C. In the case of popular schools like Catholic, AiTong, St. Nic, these does increase the vacancies in phase2B and 2C quite substantially. It is somehow unfair to those who stay close to the school and yet subject to balloting (or 1-2km no chance even to ballot) when someone who stays far away from the school (e.g. I’m aware of: staying in Pasir Ris, kid in AiTong, staying in Ponggol, kid in RGS, staying in Jurong, kid in Pei Chun). With the distance, parents will need to ferry the kid to school by private cars, thus causing the traffic jams along these schools. -
RE: [Yishun] Primary Schools
Hi Shmum,
Firstly, you’ll have to look at the balloting history of ChongFu. If for the past few years, balloting is for 1-2km, then chances are those staying outside 2km will not have a chance to ballot at all. Also, member of Hokkien Huay Kuan does not gives you automatic eligibility to apply in Phase 2B. They are those who stay within 1km of the school and more than 2 year’s membership, yet do not get the Clan’s recommendation to apply in phase 2B.
You may want to try to apply as the school’s PV instead, at least, if you have clocked in the requisite number of PV hours, you’re guaranteed the chance to apply under phase 2B.
Why don’t you call up Chongfu to check this year’s phase 2B registration and asked for the breakdown of the applicants in terms of distance. -
RE: All About Church/Clan/Society Membership
Yes…for this year’s P1 registration exercise, it seems, from one of the posts above. In general, then, no, I would think not. The criteria is not fixed. It really depends on places available in the schools, not just Ai Tong, but all the schools managed by SHHK. The membership tenure becomes the main or one of the main criteria when a situation arises where the schools are left with very little places under phase 2B. In this case, this year, Ai Tong has only 40 places, so they are more stringent in giving out their recommendations to members, selecting only from the pool who are with the clan for more than 4 years.

RE: [Tampines] Primary Schools
You can call up Poi Ching to check. Usually schools will reveal the numbers as some parents has to make decisions if they are eligible for more than one school.

RE: All About Primary Schools' Balloting History
Hi there,
Phase 2B registration will be 17th & 18th July, thus Phase 2 registration is still on-going.
The school you intend to register still has to go through phase 2B. 151 places are taken up at phase 1 and 13 places are taken up in phase 2A2, so there are now 136 places available. Out of these 136 places, 68 places will be make available for phase 2B and 68 places will be for phase 2C. If there are any places remaining after phase 2B, these will go to phase 2C.
Places available in Phase 2C supplement are those that are remaining after the phase 2C registration, which are usually the less popular schools.
Hope this helps. -
RE: All About Parent Volunteers (PV)
ChiefKiasu:
Precisely....so don't expect to see any changes to phase 2A.Red_Rhino:
I came to know that Nanyang Primary request their parent volunteers to submit their CVs to the school. Firstly, the school conduct panel interview to select PVs, then they also asks for parents CVs. Wow, being a PV in that school is really like going for job interview. But there again, those selected as PVs must be like striking lottery...afterall, its going to last for generations, for as long as they continue to give priority to former students.
Nanyang is reputed to be the choice school of many politicians for their children. I guess that makes it unsurprising that it requires quite stringent PV procedures.
