I am Robert and I am creating this post here today because I am worried about sending my children back to school during this dangerous period. This issue has kept me up all night and I would like to know what other parents think too.

I have 2 children, both in polytechnics. They have both been going back to school periodically for lessons and my wife and I had not had any issue with it so far. However, after hearing how things are in school from my children and reading the news, I am starting to get worried.

Firstly, I was told by my children that when they are in school, they spend all their time in air-conditioned labs with around 8 other students. However, there are instances of spending that time with up to 15+ other students. I do not know how big the labs are but I can’t imagine that it is safe for them to do so. On top of that, I read from a couple of articles that Covid-19 infection rates are increased in such places. Am I just overreacting?

Secondly, there are times where my wife and I are unavailable and the kids have to take public transport. The amount of times they have complained about people having their masks down, people sneezing and coughing about has happened way more times than I am comfortable with. And that makes me wonder how much more dangerous it would be like this. On my part, I can try to send them to school personally as much as possible to minimize risk. But I doubt that every other parent is able to do so and with that in mind combined with the hours they have to spend in the air-conditioned lab, doesn’t this put them at greater risk?

Lastly, I did think about just keeping them at home as many of their classes are still online. However, I heard that the lab sessions they are required to head back to take are of a significant portion of their total marks. This puts me in a dilemma as I do not want their studies to be negatively affected but the added risk to their health and our family’s health is very concerning. Especially since my parents are living with us too.

What do you guys think? Am I just overreacting? Is there anything I can do to keep the risk down while ensuring their studies are not negatively affected? Or is it worth it to increase their risk of infection and our family’s health for the sake of their education? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
