    • RE: NJC/NYGH/DHS/RV/RGS/VJC

My two girls are in NJC and Nanyang Girls’, as a parent I’d say if your child is hardworking, super bright, like the top of the top kind, go for Nanyang! I think that Nanyang is good for those who have developed early in their primary school/lower secondary years because they offer you heaps of endless opportunities if you’re one of their top few students (esp around sec1-2). The cream of the crop, so to speak. BUT the thing is, if you’re those average students there (like DD1), you’ll feel stressed up and worse still, opportunities gone! There seems to be quite a ‘sisterhood’ there (as DD1 puts it) but lots of competition going on.

NJC, on the other hand, is quite contrasting. I’d say NJC is a more suitable school for those who aren’t the "cream of the crop" kind, because they focus on every student and give almost equal opportunities to all, of course this will mean leaving the "cream of the crop" students feeling a little neglected. The approach NJC takes is pretty interesting and refreshing, though the bad thing is it is still in its pioneering batches and still ‘experimenting around’ a little here and there. In terms of competition DD2 says that if you like to be competitive then mix with the few competitive people lor, otherwise the rest of the people don’t really compete.

Well that’s just my honest and general (very vague) opinion on both schools, if you need more info on curriculum and CCAs feel free to ask! All the best for your DD’s PSLE next year!

      Jennifer:

I have found out how to calculate the Interim GPA from the PM.

I find the practice of using the grade value very unreliable becos the Grade is spread over a range of marks (eg A+ is > 84.5%). Two students each with a A+ could be one lower end, the other upper end. But the GPA is still the same for both.
I find that this GPA system is better than my eldest daughter's MSG system, though it may be \" unreliable \". Well, they have to adapt to this kind of grading systems, this kind of \" too bad \" system where you may just be one mark below an A but you still get the marks for B.

      Jennifer:
3.36 is at least a B. Seems like the cohort is doing fairly well.

Seems so, but I heard there are one or two who got below 2.0
But still, well done to the JH1s 🙂

Heard that Mrs Cheng is trying to push all of them for above 3.5 avg...

Oh, the triplets . Mingyi, mingxia and ming jun right? Mrs Lim told me that NJC was the best choice too during my son’s PTM in RI. But of course, best in what sense? She did not specify.

Same here, I enrolled dd in NJ as I don’t want her to be affected by the competitive and stressful environment which my eldest daughter went through. She seems to be doing fine even thoughs she doesn’t " mug ".

Is your daughter in solaris? I’ve heard from dd that many solaris Jh1s play frisbee at the amphi during lunch, and her class plays ball.

      Oh I see 🙂

By the way, my niece is not sure which school ( NY / NJC ) is better for her. I advised her to try out the DSA for both and see how, but she wants an answer. After speaking to my children, she is still caught in between the two choices.

Any advice for her? She is a vibrant, cheerful and rather outspoken girl. No preference as to sec / co-ed, but sis in law prefers co-ed as she thinks gina needs to learn how to communicate with boys, but my bro in law values billingualism. She does fairly well, normally top 5 in class. So... I'm not sure what to tell her and she demands an answer! 😞

I think she meant that : it's the only school with a compulsory boarding programme 🙂

But either way, I'm supportive of NJC's boarding programme ( inclusive of those non-boarding enrichments ) as I'm sure my child will benefit.

BTW, one of their boarding programmes was inline skating, how was it? My daughter had a really bad fall and refused to talk about this inline skating course.

Sigh, my daughter has been a little affected by those rumours about NJC being a boring mugger school. Well I told her that she doesn’t need to worry, as she can already see for herself that junior high life has been really " happening " , but maybe the mugger connotation only applies to the current JC students of NJC.

But it’s still just a rumour afterall, I believe and hope. Has your son ever came across this rumour?

That's a plus point too - the small cohort.

However, NJC does not have uniformed groups, which my daughter is interested in. 😞

Well, I hope the CAFE programme can help her find another CCA she'll be interested in.

      Wow, that's good 🙂

Hope my daughter will be able to interact well with seniors, I think that's important. How's your son coping so far? Does he like it?
