What is most frustrating is that there are so many people who think that all employers are villains and maids are the victims. There are so many laws protecting the maid, but no laws protecting the employers.

These people really need to be educated about the real situation about maids in Singapore.

But I got a feeling that whoever set all these laws may somehow knew and heard enough horrible stories. It is just that they have to \"favor\" those FDW more as to keep the good ties between countries. To be fair, the serious crimes are also being dealt with seriously. Just to name a few recent casesssssssssss ..... :x

You are 100% right...we have to pick up the sh!@ if the maid decides not to work, bcos she misses home/children/boyfriend/husband or because she has to cook (like my prev one).

We have to pay maid levy, maid salary (starting pay $350 for no experience), safety course ($65), agent fee, her monthly loan, food and lodging and also to train her. In the meantime, our Ministry of Manpower has a whole lot of policies supporting the FDWs.

Same here :lol: , I have been maidless since 21st last month, longest period ever without a maid, lots of privacy, can talk freely without having some stranger eaves dropping, thnk God they invented the washing machine! I do the housewk at my own time.. I cant cook n I dnt eat maids cooking. Considering calling tenkak svsw for a month. Though Im a sahm Im out everyday so I eat out.. Went to bkt timah agent to look for burmese, hve not confirm any yet. Nothing much to choose, theres one thats out for transfer n can speak english cos shes been 8 mths here. I realise if Im gonna take one that speak english fairly well then I might as well revert back to Indon/filip.... I decided to try one that is provincial and speak little english. Just hope that she will turn out to be obedient etc..and c whether i can groom her. :lol:[/quote]

I have a tumble dryer for years and that is of great help.

Really hope that you find a good help. Indo maids are generally better cooks. If possible avoid that transfer maid unless the reason of transfer is 'employer's so n so passed away so no longer need maid', otherwise ....the list of reasons n attitudes go on and on and on .....

I have had 2 Mymmar maids last year. The 1st only last for about 3 weeks. Couldn't really communicate with her as she could hardly speak English. So couldn't bear the communication bit and had to return her to the agent. The 2nd Mymmar maid was a transfer maid. Her English ok, can understand. But the problem is she is too stubborn. After about 4 months, we couldn't tahan that she refuse to change the wrong way of doing things despite us telling her again and again. When I complained to the agent, the agent said \"Mymmar maids are like that. They are stubborn.\"


I am really not sure if that is really the case. I have seen forum discussions about good Mymmar maid and an ex-staff's brother also has a good Mymmar maid.

I just it is really all about luck when it comes to getting a good maid. Keeping my fingers crossed that my new maid who is coming next week will not disappoint me.

A friend of mine had a Burmese maid...stubborn and slow. Not only that, can be calculative like Filipinos and Indonesians. The agent I used to get my maids from didn't want to bring in Burmese ones bcos they are not popular. Language wise, most do not understand English and so will be 'living in a world of their own'.

I can't agree more with you because my Burmese maid was exactly like this!!! Stubborn! Slow! Difficult communication! Living in her own world! Calculative!!! Even if I gave her more than she deserves!!!

I have a really wonderful maid from Indonesia! This is my first time hiring a maid and she has far exceeded my expectations!


Thanks to my hubby for picking her out based on her experience:
- worked in Singapore before for 5 years
- looked after 3 boys age ranging from infant to primary school
- can speak English AND Chinese!!!

WOW!

If you want to have as little problem as possible, it is a good bet to take one who used to work in Singapore and for quite a number of years with the same family.

That means she is stable, no first-time work phobia and already gotten used to SG culture and way of life!

I thought it is ok to leave with a friend if you could prove that you were on holiday? Like the exit stamp on the passport.
However, unless the maid is tested n trustworthy, NEVER leave them alone at home. Apart from the unexpect things that may do, also if the maid is not so wise, you wouldn't want to risk your house.
I thought parking at the agent there should be ok.
