Thank you all for the your take / inputs and sharings . Understand this is on TKGS but can anybody share more on Zhonghua being more geared towards chinese culture ?

Appreciate if you have/heard any experiences from friends / family currently in this school ?

      Thank you so much .

    • RE: Tanjong Katong Girls' School

Hi had called the school myself and confirmed COP is indeed at AL13. TKGS 1st choice while Zhonghua 2nd choice , my girl ( AL13) got posted to Zhonghua . Considering an appeal to TKGS but heres my dilemma would appreciate if i can get an insight from experience parents / moderators here if i should appeal , the dilemma mainly because of proximity ( we stay in Hougang area ) and holistic well-being of my girl. Personally , i have always preferred an all girls school for the obvious reason ( to weed off at least BGR issue ) hence the biggest push for appeal while the other concerns are as such :

Q1) does distance matters to you since to commute between home and school takes about ah hour each way , its a half ok half not ok thing when we placed it as 1st choice because both of us like this school but the distance is still a killer ? What are your thoughts ?

Q2) Zhonghua was placed 2nd because of the good reputation that it has throughout the years so no issue about being a good choice to start with except its co-ed but it seems to be more geared towards a chinese culture correct me if i,m wrong ?

Q3) Prior to calling TKGS i was not sure if my child is balloted out or if this year’s COP has changed hence a call to the school to confirm , so academcially she meets the appeal ( AL13 , COP 13 ) as i was informed by the admin during the call . I believe with her outgoing character she is able to deal with an all girls school so my next concern is being an only express school will this school be too stressful for her academically to undertake that she will endup struggling after all secondary school life is not the same anymore subjects and syllabus are different ?

Appreciate all comments / inputs /experienced shared …

    • RE: 2021 PSLE Discussions and Strategies (Children born in 2009)

Hi merlion in germany went to do a bit more reading up in the other thread. For CHIJ ( SJC ) the last post was in 2020 nothing new. It has been said that the environment is conducive but is not academically strong . Known notorious school back in year 2012/14 .

Both issues i have on CHIJ ( SJC ) and PHS is equally concerned . Its really such a struggle and if i were to drop these 2 schools and moved 456 up i still need another subsitute school ?

Thank you with regards on bowen n holy. will have a final look .

@merlion in germany thank you for the quick reply . Just read up on more information on the other forum on PHS with regards to the ongoing construction near the school compound not sure how it will affect the students and the mandated 1hr religious class they have to attend since it a missionary school . Something for me to think about . As compared , i seems to geared more towards CHIJ (SJC) as compared to PHS . Travelling time wise not much of a difference for both .Any thoughts on my concern ?

May i ask if Bowen or Holy Innocents enjoys better in terms of school environment and offering / programmes from the school ? Bowen COP 16 is nearer to home as compared to Holy COP 15 but if Holy is better we dont mind switching the placing (not an issue to travel to Holy ) . Thank you

    • RE: 2021 PSLE Discussions and Strategies (Children born in 2009)

hi all recap about me posting months ago on choices of school . Resutls released , DD has indeed secured AL13 , no surprises or disapponintment with the only regret that we are dropping the choice of PLMGS .

Have been actively following up with this thread but still very unsure about our placement since we do not have resources to gather info from , friends generally score better . i would therefore like to seek your 2cents worth again and time is running out , big headache :scratchhead: . Back round : 2conditions for me in choosing school a) girls school preferred and b) school environment is very important for me .

      1)TKGS 5-13 ( dream school and fufiled the 2 conditions )
      2) Zhonghua 9-13 (Zhonghua ranked 2nd because of the condusive environment hence
      placed before CHIJ )

      3) CHIJ (SJC ) or Presbyterian 9-13 / 8-13 ( Not much info on both so cannot decide )
      4) Xinmin 8-14
      5) Bowen 10-16
      6) Holy Innocent 10-15

      Questions :
      A) Although preferred a girls school , i only heard mxied commnets about CHIJ (SJC) my observation is that it seems that there are not many chinese community there please correct me if i,m wrong ? Presbyterian was however highlighted to me here in this chat that i was opened up to but other than that not much info . We hve seen the vitural open house . Appreciate any sharing from parents / kids / students from these 2 schools

      B) If 1-3 fails , choice 4 onwards is my safety net and of course DD preferred XINMIN over 5 and 6 does this works ?

We have not firm up this list and can subject to change but i would like to seek your prespective or views would appreciate your time and advice . Thank you

    • RE: 2021 PSLE Discussions and Strategies (Children born in 2009)

@Merlion we just ran through the list of school COPs from online source when it was first released and then narrow our search to school choices in the vicinity of Hougang so areas like AMK were in our consideration including Andersons but my child is like if i can get into Andersons then i might as well put PLMGS as my first choice cause that is what she has always wanted and so Andersons was off the list . In addition to ALs the search was also based mainly from my knowledge of the location of these schools and our neighbour is attending SJC . Some school names were also highlighted to me during conversation which are common and already in my list but not the schools that you mentioned kuo chuan and zhonghua . I have not heard of them before pardon me . Holy Innocents were considered over Xinming because i had a ex-colleague who was from there and also it is affliated to CJC. We dont have many friends who has kids the same age hence information is not as comprehensive and daddy is not into ‘schools’ because to him every school is a good school . As for me i do hope for a better school if my child is eligible to at least have a try at it if her academic results is of course good enough to vie for a spot and thats pretty much about it. PLMGS basically meets all our needs in term of a good school and location proximity. Good luck for all the children

Hi Merlion In Germany thank you so much for your input. So glad to hear from your perspective. We have a direct bus to SJC from our house just disturbed by what i heard and of course not having nuch information on either school ( SJC & PHS ) . Our consideration for school choices is mainly a school nearby of course with a little travelling is fine ( eg: areas like amk , sengkeng etc we had wanted TKGS initially but its too far ) , and of course the COP that my child is eligible for and also the virtual open house . PHS seems relatively better ( COP + School compound etc on virtual ) as compared to Holy Innocents. But because of the fear of havin no school the easy way out is to put holy innocents at 2nd place instead of PLMGS, SJC, PHS , Holy innocents as what was preferred . Of course the choices will change depending on the final results. I like to get myself prepared with at least an idea and hence this post . Thank you once again for all your sharings . More is welcome ……

    • RE: 2021 PSLE Discussions and Strategies (Children born in 2009)

Hi zeal mummy thank you so much for responding.

I am full of anxiety and questions on the placementof school choices and so overwhelmed with the information shared in this thread as i read on . My concern is pretty trival as compared to some of the concerns as mentioned , is how to work around the school choices in the best interest of my child .

Q2) First of all it somehwhat felt comforting to read your reply as you made the choices so promising perharps you are stronger in your thoughts and experience. Am i being too over concerned here , the reason why holy innocents is placed 2nd is so that i can be sure i will endup getting into my 2nd choice ( holy innocents ) and not try my luck again and again putting schools withCOP 12/13/14 as 2 ,3 ,4 . Holy Innocent at 5th placing is gona be a challegne eventually and i may end up with no shcools as compared to somone who has placed Holy innocents as 1st and me @ 5th placing ? Correct me if i,m wrong

      3) My apology ‘the school does not have good review’ what is your take on this school ? I have a friend who mentioned that CHIJ SJC is not an ideal choice and a neighbour who also shared similar view . As mentioned we have watched the virtual open house of all the schools above. PLMGS scored points as first no doubt and my gut feel 2nd choice is a tie breaker between presbyterain and CHIJ SJC . Hence i would like to gather some comments / feedback here with regards to CHIJ SJC maybe exisitng students or parents who has child in this school will be able to do some sharings as i am being netural here . My child has nil feedback on both schools when i asked her . Just wanting to know more information which will greatly aid in my choices .

Thank you all. Appreciate all inputs

    • RE: 2021 PSLE Discussions and Strategies (Children born in 2009)

Hi all bringing back the questions that i have posted earlier in this thread with regards to placement of school choices but it didnt seems very applicable at that point in time. In lieu of the result release tomorrow its now the time to seek your opinions . Based on prelim results of AL 13 and we are staying at Hougang area. Heres the few schools that we are looking at with PLMGS ranked the desired school .

      PLMGS COP ( 8 -11 )
      CHIJ SJC COP ( 9 - 13 )
      Presbyterian COP ( 8 -13 )
      Holy Innocents COP( 10-15 )

Q1) Should the PSLE results remains at AL13 should we even try to put a placing for PLMGS since the COP is 11 ?

Q2) Assuming that we go ahead and place PLMGS as 1st choice in the hope that this year COP is higher its still a risk to take and so 2nd school choice becomes crucial , in my case i should perharps put Holy Innocents as 2nd choice in order to at least secure a sure place at Holy with COP at 15 ?

Q3) Have heard not so good feedback from friends on CHIJ SJC , have discussed with my child but she doesnt seems affected by the negative comments .

We have watched the open house for the school above .

Hoping to score some pointers or gain more insight and sharings from the experienced parents here .

      Thank you so much .
