A fabulous new year to one and all ! :celebrate:

I was just browsing through RI's thread and read with great amusement, about the interesting assortment of teachers there.

Can any RGS girl or parent share their honest views about RGS teachers too ? Especially the Sec 1 teachers. Do they 'specialise' in teaching Sec 1 subjects only or is there a habit of following them up to Sec 2 ?

:thankyou: in advance for sharing !

IMHumbleO, to be successful as a doctor, you don't need Maths, or Chem, or Physics or Bio. You need good people skills.

Just read about all the GPs struggling... Hm, what do we want our kids to be? A successful doctor and doing well, or just getting into Med school? So are we spending too much time training them their Math, Physics etc, they get into RGS/RI great schools, they get into Med school, become doctors.... and then cannot survive as medical doctors because all these years they forgot to work on their HR skills.

Some cannot even hold a decent conversation with 'normal' folks, or hold together a marriage. What's the point of becoming a doctor, then? The doctors that are doing the best, are the ones who know how to reach out, and some are great in marketing themselves, too.

Doctor is not all that glamorous also. Remember the SARS years? That pretty much helped me decide medicine is just too scary for me. My friend was widowed in that incident, her hubby a doctor.
I totally agree that Medicine is not as glamorous as laymen think it is. Aspiring doctors taking the plunge for reasons like glam, fame, money, parents' \"face\" etc -- Think again ! There's tons of hard work, sleepless nights, occupational hazards (eg.SARS, H1N1) etc involved. Definitely not a bed of roses. What about good old-fashioned altruistic reasons such as the simple, sincere desire to minister to and to heal the sick/dying? Only true passion for the vocation and a genuine love for people will be able to bring about the great satisfaction and fulfilment that this job offers. Otherwise, it's just like any other job.

And yes, good people skills, a high EQ are crucial factors determining how successful a doctor is and not merely excellent paper qualifications. Tired mum is right to say that one does not really need to be very strong in Maths or Science to succeed in this field. I have encountered many highly qualified doctors with impressive resumes but sadly, with poor HR skills and who, as a result cannot 'connect' properly with their patients. How tragic ! šŸ˜ž

BTW, 2ppaamm, is the widow you're referring to KWP(initials)?

      Cheers ! :celebrate:

Hi all, please help in my original questions, what are the advantages of taking HMT in Sec? I understand below 2 advantages, correct?

      1) If you pass HMT at \"O\" level, no need to take Chinese in JC
      2) HMT student get to -2 from the L1R5 aggregate

The incentives for taking HMT in sec sec is clearly spelled out in the booklet \"Choosing your sec sch part one\" under 2.6 on page 6.

Your understanding is accurate. Just take note of 2.6a where it is stated that priority for admission to a JC/MI will be given to a pupil with EL and HMT who scores the same number of points as one with EL and MT.

Hi ! Can anyone enlighten me as to the format of the 'O' level HMT paper? Is it 45% letter-writing/composition and 55% language paper? What about the ORAL component? No oral?? :?

You can go to MOE website and search on LEAPS. Lots of info.

Doesn't mean no affiliation and no HMT = no JC. Just that it will be more difficult to get into the top JCs (as the header suggests). There are still a few JCs which are not on the IP programme.

As a side note, if your DD joins a uniformed group CCA or is on the school team for some sports, very likely to get the 2 pts for CCA.
Hi ! Do you mean to say that uniformed groups are a good way of gaining LEAPS points? Can you elaborate? In what ways can such pupils earn their points in UGs? School representations or leadership ranks? Thanks. šŸ˜„

      Hi RGPS parents

I have some questions here. Hopefully someone can help.

I am considering RGSP or SCGS in a few years time for my girl. I'm more keen in RGSP but the school does not have affiliation like SCGS. Can anyone shed some light in their average PSLE T-score? Do they generally perform well enough to go to the top schools? From what I gathered, the admission score to the top secondary schools are about 255 onwards. šŸ™
      Hi asil,

Generally, one has to be careful when interpreting 'average' T-scores in schools with GEP pupils. The average includes the GEP pupils who tend to score better. For eg. I believe that the average for GEP pupils in RGPS every year is about 265. (I read this from another thread). The school's average is about low 230s. The true average for the mainstreamers then is lower than 230, after excluding the 70-plus GEP pupils. Hope this helps a little.

      Cheers! :celebrate:

      Top 15 in RGPS:

      286,28X,28X,280,279,278,
9 student got 277, including my daughter. (12 of them from GEP class, 3 from mainstream, 1 from 6E (277, my daughter), 2 from 6F (277)

In 6E class: average score:262, about 18 students in 6E join RGS this year.
      There is some inaccuracy. Top 15: 286,283, three 282s, two 280s, 279, seven 277s.

      Cheers! šŸ˜„

Thanks for all your hard work. Need you to update RGS COP. Know of someone who entered at 259 !!! Not sure if there is any lower entry T-score.

      Cheers! :celebrate:

I don't think its via Central Posting. Probably via DSA.

Nope. It's via central posting. šŸ˜„

      Hi RGS parents,

Need to find out something. What happens if a pupil has CCA on Wed and Fri, but is taking up a 3rd language, which falls on Wed or Fri. Do they go for CCA or 3rd language? Will there be make-up classes? If so, when? Please advise.

      :?

      Thanks in advance.
