Would like to know what CCAs in RGS ? which day and time consume each week ? etc

Go to http://www.rgs.edu.sg/cca/ep_cca.htm you can select the CCA and check the schedule.
Are the students allowed to try out the CCA before deciding which suits them?
My gal does track for past 3 yrs. Even she performs well, I don't quite like it as she gets hurt often and always under the sun. She is thinking of shooting and I think NCC will be good for leadership training. Anyone has info on these 3 CCA?

      Hi NatTif Mummy,

From what I've heard from current RGS parents, it's not so much about the pupils choosing the CCA but rather, the CCA 'choosing' them. 😢

As all pupils have to enrol in at least 1 core CCA (all involved in national competitions), there will apparently be strict auditions for almost all the CCAs. For eg, my friend shared that her dd could not get a place in the choir a few years ago as she ONLY had a Grade 5 in piano and all those selected had to have at least Grade 6 and above !!! She was allocated a uniformed group (not her choice!) instead. The girl was miserable for 2 years but seems to be starting to enjoy the CCA in Sec 3. šŸ˜›

Unfortunately, it is no longer the same as selecting a CCA for primary school, where one can choose a preferred CCA. It seems to me that you have to excel in that area before you will be considered, as RGS is one of the top girls' school for sports and performing arts, so only the 'best' will be invited to join. Hence, be prepared to get a CCA you may not be very passionate about.

I'm curious about the selections for the uniformed groups, especially Girls Guides and Red Cross. Would appreciate it if any parent could shed some light on the selection criteria for these CCAs. Do they have auditions for uniformed groups too ?? Thanks in advance ! :celebrate:

    • RE: 2009 GEP Screening And Selection

NYPS - The overal GEP TOP performer each year comes for each level comes from this school. [quote=\"2centsworthy\"]

As far as I know, from information divulged by GEP teachers, this is definitely not true. The school which produces the top performer for each year/level varies from year to year. Perhaps many but certainly, not all hail from NYPS.

Whatever it is, these kids are all very bright and it is not really important whether one is at the top or bottom of the top 1%. Making it to the top 1% is already a very remarkable feat in itself.

:congrats: to all successful P3 GEP pupils and their parents !!! šŸ˜„

      ApronMama:
Anyone know whether GEP students are included in the Edusave scholarship of top 5% & 10 % at end of P5 and P6 togather with the mainstream students or they have a seperate one?

      Hi ApronMama,

GEP pupils are assessed separately at the end of P5 & 6 and awarded the Edusave scholarships accordingly - top 5% of GEP pupils in that particular GEP school ($300), next 5%($250). This means that, depending on the standard of the centre, the cut-off for selection of the top 10% differs from school to school. šŸ˜„

      Herbie:
I heard of one case, stay at Katong, 1st choice ACS and 2nd choice CH. And he got in CH instead.

This is probably because the number of available vacancies in ACS is very limited. In my child's year, I heard that there were fewer than 5 places left as the other vacanies had already been filled by the P3 ACS boys who made it to GEP. Do check with the school at the briefing to see how many vacancies are left so that you can better gauge your chances of getting in. šŸ˜„

      Herbie:
My DD's friend, M just wanted to indicate one choice instead ot two choices.

So what is going to happen?

      Can anyone advise please?
      Hi Herbie,

My dd indicated only 1 choice in her year as she was very sure that it was the only GEP school she wanted to attend.

You can probably get a good idea of how many vacancies are available for each school by making enquiries at the individual booths set up by the respective schools. Based on this information and the distance of your home from your desired school, you can make a better decision.

Understandably, pupils who got into GEP from the GEP schools get priority entry. I believe the rest are allocated places based on distance from school and according to school gender. Eg. If your child is from an all-boys school, he will stand a higher chance of getting places in ACS and CHS,as compared to eg. a pupil from a mixed school.

Hope this helps and all the best ! šŸ˜„

ya, ask her dd tikam tikam on toto, maybe will strike...just joking šŸ˜›

hahaha i think the probability for GEP is much higher than toto... select 500 out of 4000 students the probability is 12.5%

Actually, the probability of getting into GEP is about 500 out of the total cohort of about 50 000 P3 pupils(1%). Not sure about the chances of winning toto though! šŸ˜„

      eri:
hi sleeping beauty, my dd is doing mep in rgs.

      1) you will be briefed about the criteria duing talks conducted on reporting day and orientation. there should be an audition and interview. not so sure about the minimum standards cos my dd got in thru mep dsa and was excused from the auditions. but i think should be grade 5 theory and grade 6 practical.
      2) you have to collect application forms for the programmes you are interested (mep/sap...) during reporting day. more details will be printed on the forms. intake should be less than 30 for mep. not sure for sap.
      3) yes they are examinable.
4)during sec 1 brefing, the teacher in charge of mep highly discouraged mep students from taking 3rd lang but many still went on to take 3rd lang. anyway, from this year onwards, 3rd lang is reduced to just once a week. so should be no problem there unless cca takes up many days.
      5) no one dropped out of mep in the first 2 years for my dd's cohort. in fact one new student joined in sec 2.
      6) mep and sap lessons for lower sec are conducted in sch during curriculum time. students take mep/ sap while the rest of their classmates take general aethetics classes. for mep upper sec, they stay back on wed afternoons for lessons. sap for upper sec should be conducted on one of the afternoons too. maybe fri? cos sch ends earlier on weds and fris.
7)there are 2 classes for mep/ sap. but of cos not the entire class take mep/sap.
šŸ˜Ž sec 1s will not know their classes on reporting day. the programmes would be on admin matters, briefings on the different programmes like mep/ sap etc.., what to expect during orientation...
Thanks for your detailed reply, Eri. Greatly appreciated ! :salute: I have another few queries to trouble you or anyone who happens to be in the know.

From what I understand, pupils will only know their classes on the 1st day of school. However, you mentioned that the MEP/SAP pupils are put together in separate classes. Does this mean that interested pupils have to apply on reporting day (or very soon after) and attend the necessary auditions and interviews in the last week of December, so that the school can allocate them to their respective classes by Day 1 ? Or, are the selections held only after school reopens ? If so, does this mean that MEP/SAP pupils may have to change classes in the 1st few weeks of school if selected ? Quite disruptive. :whut:

BTW, what are the normal school hours like ? Any activities on Saturday ?

      Thanks again! šŸ˜„

    • RE: Raffles Girls' School (Secondary) [*IP]

Hi ! I'm wondering if any current RGS parent/pupil has any thoughts/feedback/experience to share on the Music Elective Programme and the Special Art Programme. Hope someone can address the following questions that I have.

1)What is the criteria for entry into the MEP and SAP ?
2)When can Sec 1 RGS pupils apply and roughly what is the intake per programme like ?
      3)Are these examinable subjects ?
4)If a pupil is taking one of the above, are they still allowed to take a 3rd language or can they only choose to do 1 elective ?
5)What is the drop-out rate for the 2 programmes ?
6)What is the weekly timetable like - after school hours/how often/duration of each lesson/location of class ?
7)Are MEP/SAP pupils grouped together in the same class? I heard that they are for the current Sec 2s, but are spread out for the current Sec 1s.
8)Will the Sec 1s know their classes on reporting day(?23rd Dec) or only on the 1st day of school next year ? Just curious -- What is the programme like on reporting day ?

      Thank you in advance. šŸ˜„
