      Hi NatTif Mummy,

From what I've heard from current RGS parents, it's not so much about the pupils choosing the CCA but rather, the CCA 'choosing' them. 😒

As all pupils have to enrol in at least 1 core CCA (all involved in national competitions), there will apparently be strict auditions for almost all the CCAs. For eg, my friend shared that her dd could not get a place in the choir a few years ago as she ONLY had a Grade 5 in piano and all those selected had to have at least Grade 6 and above !!! She was allocated a uniformed group (not her choice!) instead. The girl was miserable for 2 years but seems to be starting to enjoy the CCA in Sec 3. πŸ˜›

Unfortunately, it is no longer the same as selecting a CCA for primary school, where one can choose a preferred CCA. It seems to me that you have to excel in that area before you will be considered, as RGS is one of the top girls' school for sports and performing arts, so only the 'best' will be invited to join. Hence, be prepared to get a CCA you may not be very passionate about.

I'm curious about the selections for the uniformed groups, especially Girls Guides and Red Cross. Would appreciate it if any parent could shed some light on the selection criteria for these CCAs. Do they have auditions for uniformed groups too ?? Thanks in advance ! :celebrate:
Hi NatTif Mummy and sleeping beauty,

Yes at RGS there are selections / trials for every CCA, even uniform groups. Most girls will usually pick at least a few CCAs to try out for - and hope to be selected for at least a desired one. There will be a couple of dates posted for the various CCAs selections / trials and at the initial stage you would have to register for selections / trials for all those CCAs you are interested in. On trial date, for uniform group selection, it’s more an interview process, whereas for choir, dance, gymnastics and the sports CCAs, it would be actual try-outs, where the girls have to actually sing (solo), dance (group) and play that sport to be selected.

It really is not a case where you have an interest in that area and you want to pursue it further as a CCA, but more whether you meet the mark to be selected for it in the first instance.

It seems quite common in Sec schools that CCA choose them. My girl (not in RGS) was from choir for 5 years in primary school, got gold in SYF, particpated in charity shows. Unfortunately, she was not selected when went for audition of choir CCA in her Sec School. She was so disapointed. And from my understanding, uniform groups are usually for those who could not get into their choice CCAs. But for boys, many would put NCC or NPCC as their first choice. I also understand from her that, many of the CCAs intake are through audition, selections, interviews and tests.
