my daughter just started P1, & boy, am i so pissed. although the school claim to be holistic, but i feel the expectation are quite high (maybe it's just me). 1st week already bought back list of spelling words including words like elbow, shoulder & 1 line dictation.

i thought 1st year is supposed to be honeymoon period? by the time i reach home & settle down after dinner it's already 8pm, & my daughter has to sleep by 9pm otherwise next morning can't wake up at 6am for school bus. (thankfully we don't live in tampines/Jurong or some obscure corner in singapore)

sigh. sorry for the long rant, but i just feel like i'm drowning. how is it that my own parents can be so laissez-faire during our time, & now i'm so stressed? i don't even expect my DD to be top, i only want her to blend in, average can keep up good enough, no need to be singled out for punishment for not handing in homework, getting big fat ZERO for spelling etc?

any suggestions from experienced parents how to smoothen children's transition into P1?
      Hi Lynnette,

Which class is your daughter in? My daughter is also in P1 this year. She got her spelling list only in this week.

The words you mentioned and 1 line of dictation are similar to my daughter's spelling list. So I guess they are the same. However, my daughter crossed-out the dictation and those words on the right hand side of the list. Hence, not much words to learn.

      Different class/ teacher, different requirements?

I am also interested to know.
      Any parent can share?
I have not personally send my child for placement test before but I have been emailing with Thomson branch in regards to P1 Headstart programme. The child will be required to be able to read from Ladybird series level 10 and above. Peter & Jane series is appropriate. The child is also be asked to write one or two simple sentences during the placement test. There has been students who are good enough to join either the 2nd or 3rd module of P1 Headstart. However it is all subject to clearance of their written placement test as the child must be ready to join in between the modules.[/quote]

My child went for the test mid this year. She was asked to read and finished a storybook. After that, the tester went on to ask her few questions on the storybook she read. And that's all.. She was not test on writing.. lucky..

I guess different tester, different requirements?

Does JEI/PSLE Maths covers critical thinking questions? Which is more suitable for P1/P2 - MPM or JEI Maths?

My K2 girl is attending both LP and TAS. Currently, no show and tell for both centres. Hope both centres will include it in their P1 programme next year else I might consider signing my girl up for public speaking class.

      Hi Soursop,

My dd is in MPM woodlands civic centre too. She has been there for 3 months and frankly speaking, I still do not know who her trainer is. Everytime I sent her there, there will always be different trainer taking her. Am so fed up of it. I have been thinking of transferring her out. My dd was also confused with her maths and I wonder whether is it the trainer didn’t teach properly or simply just provide her the answer. Previously, she is still ok with her maths.

Currently, which branch is your child in? If transfer out, do we need to pay registration fee again?
