springdance,
i certainly understand what you're going through.
with a weaker child, every little baby step is an achievement. 听写, 默写, 背作文开头结尾 was certainly a nightmare. as for spelling, i use different coloured pens to break up each word for her to remember.
submit the EP's recommendation for MT asap. i sincerely hope it will be approved.
my daughter had her language assessment done at NUH. she is a subsidized patient. it took 2 hours on a weekday. the written report cost $100. the report only has 2 years validity period.
Hi Janet
Thanks .. cross fingers hope our application will be approved!
By the way, how is your kid doing after dropping MTL? Have the grades for the other subject shown improvement?
I spent a few thousands as a private patient to go through the psychological assessment and getting the doctor's report.. heart pain... what is the process to go through to be a subsidized patient? Is the wait super long?

RE: Exemption from Mother Tongue
Grateful for all the advices!
Catmoon, am spending alot of my time revising with DS every day. Even cut down my work hours (with pay cut) so that I can be back home earlier to work with him. There is progress but tiny steps since his retention is low and much time needed to go back and forth. And also having to spend a significant percentage of time on english and chinese spellings, focusing not only knowing how to write but also the meaning. And yes, i use highlighters
but doing spellings meant lesser time to revise work. Actually, I wanted to cut down time on this but find it really hard unless just let DS score poorly which might not be good for his morale.
Ammonite, your homeschool teachings sound pretty good. Maybe you can give me more details on the techniques over email or messenger? About the EP report, apparently I didnt much questions because it's quite clear details.. also, she is charging an arm and leg for each consultation. I am half a mind to change another doctor for second assessment in P5. Any recommendation?
Janet, we can feel each other's pain for sure! After reading the inputs here, think I am likely incline to submit the exemption application after SA2 so that DS has more time for the 3 subjects for P4, provided it's approved.

RE: Exemption from Mother Tongue
Thanks everyone for your feedback.
Indeed, I am also thinking it is helpful to let my DS drop MTL soon so that he can start earlier with more time for the remaining 3 subjects. He is struggling in both Maths and English. We hardly have time to practise his \"forever fail\" compo writing because he need to catch up with Maths, EL spelling and chinese spelling week after week. Due to his poor memory retention, he will forget the last maths topic learnt when teacher go on to the next topic. And worse, we have to spend alot of time to coach him to grasp the concept of a new topic. It's like a snowball effect.. always trying to catch up, very tiring!
For English, everyone tells me DS need to read more to improve. But he hardly has any time to do reading, not to mention he doesnt like reading at all in the first place. So how to improve??
His chinese teacher is aware of my intention to exempt MTL but he share his observation that DS has potential to improve and he doesn't hate the language... maybe he did pretty fine for P1 and P2.. only P3 go down the hill. So the teacher says I shouldn't give up...
So end up, here we are, still hanging on to all.. but I feel somehow it's not really healthy. Lower primary already everything borderline, what happens in upper primary? However, the risk of dropping MTL is what if my DS English still doesnt improve even if with no chinese? Then what??
At times, I really feel so lousy and confused.. just cry quietly on my own and thinking how to move on.

RE: Exemption from Mother Tongue
Hi Everyone
Hope to get some thoughts as I couldn't decide whether to let me DS drop MTL...
For P1 and P2, he has been doing relatively fine for Chinese but when he started P3, his grade dropped significantly, and terrible for composition writing. For English main paper and Maths, they have always been between 50+ to 60+ ever since he was P1 while composition is consistently a 'Fail'. Science is a new subject in P3, so the coverage wasn't much yet for SA1 and hence, result OK. But, I am not too positive for SA2 because of more topics covered and it is obvious that he has a lot of challenges handling open ended questions. Overall, he still passes everything but confirm Band 3 across all subjects (which meant that Chinese is not the weakest but on par as English and Maths). Maybe he gets a band 2 for science (for the time being!). His language ability and long term working memory retention are weak and is slow in his thinking processes.
I have gotten the psychologist's report for him since December 2015, with recommendations for him to exempt MTL and extra time for exam as he has been diagnosed with dyspraxia and some level of dyslexia. However, till now, I still have not gone ahead to execute any of the recommendations though I have already submitted the report to his school for information. I believe the report is valid for one more year before it expires....
Am really in a BIG dilemma...On one hand, I am hoping if he might grow out of his difficulties and improve but I also don't wanna wait till he is P5 or P6 when it is too late to do another assessment and submit report to MOE. If you were in my position, would you go ahead to submit MTL exemption application now?? -

RE: [Bukit Merah] Primary Schools

hi qms
Last year, there was balloting for those in the 1-2 km category during P2B. Since you have already qualified for P2B in RMPS (I assume you are), you might as well try this school in P2B. If you do not apply, your time spent volunteering in the school would have gone down the drain. If you try, you still have a chance. Anyway, you have nothing to lose by applying in P2B, right?springdance:
Hi QMS and xlan
Okie..got the distances..
RMPS - Phase 2B (1 - 2km)
APS - Phase 2C (< 1km)
Considering the school itself as well as the chances, which one is a better choice to try if U were me? Any 'strategies' to go about?
Should you manage to get into RMPS in P2B, you may then monitor the situation in APS. If you are able to get a confirmed place in APS in P2C, I suggest you withdraw your application from RMPS and apply with APS. Personally, I feel that distance is very important. On the other hand, if you need to go through balloting in APS, I would suggest you to stay put in RMPS. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
My two cents.
That's my thoughts too..
Just wondering, u mentioned abt withdrawing from RMPS if chances are good at APS.. any other reasons besides distance factor?
And how to go abt withdrawing appln?
Maybe u can PM me to share more? -

Hi QMS and xlan
What is the distance from your house to these schools?springdance:
hi fellow parents
I hope you can help me take a quick poll ..
Am deciding between:
RMPS - under phase 2B
APS - under phase 2C
Which one would you pick? :?

For RMPS, we are under 1 - 2km... APS, no idea coz it's not reflected on OneMap.
