As someone has already pointed out, if the govt really want to implement a \"Clean Wage\" policy, he must be fair to BOTH parties. They have all the rights to implement car park charging by all means but also please do not shortchange the teachers for many of the the extra duties ( tangible or intangible) that they have to do.

Agreed. If you want Clean Wages, implement it also on the employer that they give Clean Wages for all additional services rendered by the teachers.

If teachers feel shortchanged when parking is charged.
Wont the teachers who donot drive feel shortchanged for so long as all do similar work as some get more benefit than others.
It is not teachers who drive are given more work than others.

I tried just one volume for my girl last year ,not bad , But it had questions compiled from old prelim papers few years back not recent ones.
So if you need systematic working then get it for your child , else grab recent years prelim papers to make the child work.

I used Conquer maths,A-star maths,,Past 5 years PSLE papers and Top school papers and prelim papers for my girl .She was able to get A* .

While I salute the teachers who put their soul and take care of their students as their own , I was put off with some of comments I read recently portraying the other side.


Every profession has their own inconveniences and advantages , it is not only teachers are like making sacrifices .Everyone misses family time,bondings .,

Some profession even work longer hours for a lesser pay , not much holidays as compares. They also got meet with unsatisfied complaining customers etc., etc.,
The pay is good enough to afford to car too while there are ppl who work longer hours including public holidays who cannot afford car.
Extra working like assisting CCA,supplemetary,admin are part of profession.If there is problem with hours working sort it as separate issue with principal/MOE.
Carpark charges as most of companies in SG charge their employees is issued by MOE for teachers too.Some companies do waive parking for employees as MOE has done till todate.So if not happy please raise issue with the employer MOE and sort it instead of pointing other things which are part of profession like sacrifices.

Anybody in the IT line will know how rapidly things evolve in this sector. Can't possibly teach every new programming language. Before you even finish teaching a new programming language and master it entirely, another will pop out.

And not every industry employs the same programming language in their systems. Despite so many programming languages, the basic programming fundamental are similar in nature. Once you know one, it is not difficult to pick up another one.

Those in the IT field need to be versatile. The basics of computing need to be taught before one can progress to higher level modules. How can a comp science graduate have zilch knowledge of the fundamental workings of a computer and programming? It's akin to saying why did they teach me ABC in kindergarten when they don't even ask or test me on my ABC when I go to primary school.

Besides learning the basics and fundamentals of computing, comp science students also learn to analyse user requirements and propose solutions using technology. These all come in handy when working.

The writer has a spoon-feed-me mentality.

I have engaged the present tutor for about 4 months now. I must say she is a very enthusiastic teacher who always think of ways to help my ds. She will normally give quite a bit of homework and the next lesson will go through the answers with him.

The homework will include assessment books on synthesis, compre, grammar, vocabulary. She didn't really teach on compo. I think the reason may be to brush up his grammar and other aspects of English first.

I am just wondering whether her way of teaching, ie by giving homework and thereafter going thru them, will be different from other commercial schools? Like Just Ed, mindstetcher, learning lab etc

Is there some techniques in answering comprehension questions? For multiple choice questions, ds normally get all correct. But when answering in sentences, he may either get the answer wrong or answered in grammatically wrong way. What are the ways to improve compre?

Grammar
Should they be taught per topic e.g. the rules on either, neither, subject-verb agreement.... ?

I have thought of signing up ds in a commercial writing course as they will learn phrases and ways to start and end a compo. Instead of letting her to teach as I feel that writing can be a very specialized area.

My DD had been with reputed center for 3 years for English.I would say the curriculum includes teaching rules of synthesis and grammar followed by worksheets.For comprehension ..yes they taught answering techniques and compo also different techniques are taught and discussed.They didnt give much homework for them though.

Hallo, I bought some Sciences/Hist/Geog/Maths and Lit references for my dd. The school material is insufficient practice. She doesn’t do them regularly cuz she doesn’t hv time. She refers to them when comp stops, when CCAs n ldrship stands down and esp closer to exams.
But my dd says the history/geog answers on the assessment are not comprehensive enough. Same comment from my ds.
My dd is a 4.0 gpa so I think the assessment drills do help : )

For me, it isn't necessary. DD1 is busy enough with her school work and cca. When she is free, I encourage her to pursue other interests e.g ukelele, guitar, k pop etc. She volunteers in church which is great. She didn't get a 4.0 GPA. But I think she will have a richer sec school life. These are individual parenting choices, I suppose? So, if the assessment books are calling out to you, go for it
