    • RE: Methodist Girls' School (Secondary)

      1) Mgs(sec) is affiliated to its Pri. So there will be girls from Pri. The O level Sec 1-2 classes has 2 SBC (Sophia Blackmore class) for the more academically-able girls who could have gone IP but choose to do Os. These classes will have girls from other schools too. Also there’s girls who DSA in thru sports and MEP (music elective program), they could be in the other classes too.

      2) the girls from IP will be doing the curriculum to prepare them to go IB year 5 in ACSI.
      3) at the end of Sec 2, girls could try to get a transfer to IP, thru a test and interview and excellent results for sec 1-2. Girls from other schools are eligible to apply too.
      4) at the end of Os, girls can choose to go ACJC, affiliated to Mgs. Or ACSI to do IB.

    • RE: All About Teaching Mathematics

Basically there are 2 things you need to take note.

In most topics, like fractions, ratio, percentage, whole numbers, there are
      1) basic concepts. Like in fractions,
4 operations of fractions, conversion of mixed nos to improper etc… basic prob sums
Like fraction of a set, part whole etc…

      2) heuristics.
Where the unchanged total, constant difference,
external change, repeated identity, units and parts, equal fractions/percentage, of the remainder etc… comes in.

So for any math teaching, these 2 must be done.
To strengthen basics, then introduce heuristics.

To tackle the problem sums, there are a few ways.
      1) identify the concept. But usually in problem sums, there are different concepts to 1 sum.

      2) break the questions into different parts and tackle sentence by sentence. So to understand the problem sums statements is important too.

      Example :
      1) John has 45% of number of beads Joe has.
When John transferred 20% of his beads to Joe,
Joe has 146 more beads than John.
How many beads does John have at first?

      1st sentence :
      John 45%. Joe 100%

      2nd sentence :
      John 20/100 x 45 = 9%
      John left 45-9 = 36%
      Joe has 100 + 9 = 109%

      3rd sentence :
      109 - 36 = 73
      73% is 146
      1% is 2.
      Etc…

This is a total unchanged question.
But it’s not done the total unchanged way like in ratio.

So the kids must still diligently practice and be exposed to different sums. There’s no short cut to scoring A star for Math.

T-score for languages are worth more

So the A stars for languages more valuable
and can pull up T score significantly.

I have students scoring both A stars for languages scoring
25x. But students scoring A stars for math
or science T score btw 220-235.
