Hi, we are returning Singaporeans.

My girl just gets her school list from the Spers test (MOE test for kids who just returned from overseas).
She is eligible to go to MGS O Levels track.

May I ask the following questions?
1) Does the O level track consist of mostly girls from MGS primary?
I wonder will it affect her in making new friends.
2) Does MGS have animation/digital arts for CCA?

Will appreciate if any MGS parents can help to answer the above question.;)
We need to submit our six choices in few days time.

I understand that MGS has IP and o level track. May I know whether students on IP track study IB curriculum for year 1-4?

Also for those students under o level track, do they have a chance to go for IB diploma after year 4? Do they still sit for o level or go straight to year 5 for IB?

I saw that for MGS/ AC(I) IB graduating from both IP and O level.

1) Mgs(sec) is affiliated to its Pri. So there will be girls from Pri. The O level Sec 1-2 classes has 2 SBC (Sophia Blackmore class) for the more academically-able girls who could have gone IP but choose to do Os. These classes will have girls from other schools too. Also there’s girls who DSA in thru sports and MEP (music elective program), they could be in the other classes too.

2) the girls from IP will be doing the curriculum to prepare them to go IB year 5 in ACSI.
3) at the end of Sec 2, girls could try to get a transfer to IP, thru a test and interview and excellent results for sec 1-2. Girls from other schools are eligible to apply too.
4) at the end of Os, girls can choose to go ACJC, affiliated to Mgs. Or ACSI to do IB.

Both IB curriculum track and O-level track teaching pedagogy, are different. The breadth & depth exposure in training, are different

Each has its own unique curriculum track to study to completion. Not allowed to cross over into each other's track.

If you are inside the IB track,
you are only allowed to take your own IB unique exam test papers format, in each Semester

Why ?

because

MGS (IB) is preparing you to join ACSI, come year 5.


You cannot take any O level exam paper, because fundamentally, you are studying the IB curriculum subjects.


Who can take O-level National exam ?
only those students studying the O-level track, then can

Hence right from the on-start, u need to decide and identify, what exactly do u want ?
What are your needs or want ?
You want IB or want O-level ?
If not sure or can't decide, perhaps speak to the Principal or VP, find out more what IB curriculum entail

But if u still want A-level, then choose O level because after O level, can still choose an A-level Junior College based on your L1R5 achievement, or join your own Affliated ACJC

There are 2 points where a student can move from the O level track to IB:
- after Sec 2 (they have to apply, and take an internal test)
- after O levels (they can't avoid taking the O levels after entering Sec 3 of the O level track)

Moving from IB to the O level track is less straightforward, and a student will have to appeal to the school. I don't know if the school or MOE has rules that prevent this, especially if the student got in by DSA. I'm not sure if it can be arranged, but it almost certainly will not be allowed once the student begins Y3.

Moving from IP to the A level track is probably possible after Y4, but again, I don't know what rules there may be about this. But since students in IP can apply to poly, I believe there must be a way for them to apply to a JC to take A levels. You should check with the school or with MOE about this.

My child is joining the MGS O Levels program. I would like to find out more about the Sophia Blackmore Academy in particular - how many classes are there, is it subject based e.g. humanities, Maths & Science or covering all subjects, what is the cut off point & promotion criteria..... hi, i know you were redirected but i'll post my answer here in direct response to your query

I was in the SBA at MGS (now IP) and there are usually 3 classes for SBA, but based on 2018's intake there happened to be only two (1I and 1E), one for Math and Sciences and the other for Languages (as long as you get an A* for said area, your child will be automatically posted to one of the SBA classes). Usually, there'll be three SBA classes (1E, 1I and 1O), one for both areas and one more for all-rounders; people who got A* for at least one subject in both areas and is in the O Level program will be in said class). Cut-off point for SBA is 250, if she was previously from MGS Primary but 255 for non-affiliated. Assuming she is already in MGS, promotion criteria is that she must pass Language Arts as a subject whole for end-of-year overall grade and get an overall pass for all subjects. Regarding lessons, depending on your class, for example if you are SBA Math and Science there will be a different math book the students get to use, same as IP students (if you're not in said class you are still free to purchase it for additional revision), emphasis is mostly spread out equally but if you are in the SBA *blank* subject-oriented classes only slightly a bit more, but other than that, that's about it. SBA students also get to take one additional non-examinable compulsory subject called Philosophy, Thinking, and Knowledge (PTK) which the IP girls take, and will be beneficial to your child if she is planning to pursue the IP route in Y3 or going to ACSI after the O' Levels in Sec 4.

I do hope your girl will enjoy her time at MGS and her Orientation, because I had a hand in planning some of the games, haha ^^
