School will submit all documents during the registration of national exams (say PSLE/O level) some time end Jan or Feb of the year of the child taking the exam.

Working backwards, it is advisable to get all the supporting documents (from EP or therapists) done by November the year before the national exam. (Don’t count on Dec as most EPs/therapists are also in the holiday mood. They need a break too)

As a guide, see how the child performs for the SA2 at P5 or Sec 3, speak to the school teachers or tutors to get a feel and advice, and then, enlist the EP or therapists to make the necessary recommendations and provisions for the child.

Please do NOT wait till Jan of the year of the national exam to go for assessment. The EP or therapist may not be able to get the letter ready in time for the school’s submission to MOE in end Jan/Feb. Avoid last minute preparation as it will be very stressful for all, especially the parents.

      EASON MAGPIES:

Thanks for the reply. We had already brought our DD for speech and OT and still going. There are some improvement. My wife's friends had been saying how amazing this alternative form of therapy is and keep asking her to try. So she wanted me to bring our DD to try.

I am cautious so I am asking around. Seems many of my friends had not even heard of it though you mentioned it is around for 20 years. It seems most Singaporeans never heard of it.
As parents, I think we will try and do whatever it takes to help our children improve. We are always hoping that there is one therapy that might work. But it's a long drawn process and for ASD kids, sometimes it takes a few therapies over a prolonged period of time to see improvements. Whatever therapies one embark on, just bear in mind that it's not a quick fix solution.

If time and resources permit, maybe go for 4-5 sessions to try it out. Otherwise, just concentrate on the OT and SLT. You might want to consider diet/supplements as well as this works on the insides of the body so that the body can function better.

      All the best

To build fine motor skills and strengthen the fingers, let your child play with:

      - putty or play doh
      - (squeeze) stress balls
      - five stones
      - thread shoe lace for a reasonably clean school shoe
      - bounce a tennis ball down and catch it as it comes up with palm facing down
      - throw the tennis ball up and catch it as it comes down with palm facing up

One of the best way to build core muscles is swimming!! If time and resources permit, good to send the child for swimming lessons when he is about 6 or 7 yo.

Builds core muscles, helps in coordination, body and spatial awareness, strength training and builds stamina. Picks up water survival skills too.

      Couragemom:

Hmm... Both his sped teacher and his ST recommended me to look for a physiotherapist (but don't have 1 to recommend!) for my son's motor development issues.

Ok, like for example, I noticed long time ago that my son cannot nod on command or raise his head above a certain level and I told his OT and she recommended some exercise for me to do at home with him. Recently I asked my son to nod his head and he actually can do it although quite stiff his movement. (Coincidentally or not?) this is also the Eureka moment when he started to look up consistently at us while playing to show us his toys or when he does something right (like after completing a puzzle) and expect us to praise him. Before that, he just plays and hardly even look up.

That got me thinking about another of his motor development issues - standing still. Yes, standing still. Up to now my son cannot stand still on a spot for even 1 minute, he will sway or shuffle his feet to kind of stand still in a spot. Last time when he stands to watch tv, he will even move backwards! I spoken to my OT and she said it is a midline issue cum vestibular issue. She liked the idea of my son visiting a physiotherapist to work on his core muscles (especially his left side of the body) while she focuses on sensory integration and fine motor skills.

I went online just now and found one physiotherapy clinic. Have booked an appointment to do assessment. Will update all of you if such a service is different from an OT session and/or is at all useful.
A good OT is able to work on the child's core muscles and vestibular system too. If fact, that is the OT's job as she should be trained for that. Not necessarily to go to a PT, otherwise, both you and the poor child will be running all over the place; and not to mention :moneyflies: :moneyflies:

      EASON MAGPIES:
      Hi to all

My DD was diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) last year. She is 4 years plus now.

Recently my wife's friend recommended us to bring her to see a Neuropsychologist.

The name of her practise is Osteopathic Medicine and Rehabilitation pte ltd intergral ntc.

I did some wiki research and found that this is quite a new form of medicine in Singapore.

My wife's friend claimed it improve her own child conditions tremendously. I am quite skeptical about it as to whether it will really improve anything related to ASD.

      1) Does anyone here have any own experiences to share about neuropsychology or Osteopathic medicines?

      2) Will it help to improve ASD?

      3) I was told there is massage therapy of the brain? Is there such a thing? Sounds like some kind of old wives tale which makes me even more skeptical.

Do share with me if you have any knowledge or experiences.

      Thank you in advance.
Osteopathy is not new in Singapore. If not mistaken, it's probably around for about 20 years. I'm not sure if it should be considered medicine per se as it is an alternative form of therapy for rehabilitation.

The massage therapy on the brain is considered as cranial sacral therapy. Whether it's effective or not really depends from person to person.

The more tried and trusted forms of therapies are:

      - Speech and Language Therapy
      - Occupational Therapy
      - ABA
      - Nutrition/Diet
      - Sound Therapy

We submitted since last year and follow up with this year teacher.

Then SEAB is taking a long time to approve your request. By right, you would know by now. Suggest that you contact the school and SEAB again. Hopefully they revert soon. 🙏 :xedfingers:

My son had his 2nd spelling test yesterday. And thank God, this time he got all correct. Happy for him cos he tried and is paying attention to what the teacher read. For me, I was actually feeling nervous when I saw his spelling book in his bag yesterday, my heart skipped abit when I was opening the book to see his result. OMG! i can't believe I am feeling that, is only a K1 spelling test for goodness sake!!. I really need to control my own emotions and anxiety.
Please don't be so hard on the child and yourself. As u rightly pointed out, it's only K1. The last thing you want is for both of you to burn out before P1. The education journey is long (a good 10 years, P1-S4) and there will be the ups and downs.

You don't want your child, ASD or otherwise to equate marks with a mother's love and happiness/pride. One step at a time and celebrate the little victories. And it doesn't need to be 100/100 all the time. More importantly, the child enjoys school and learning, and his emotional and social well-being is taken care of. The education part will slowly fall into place.

When did you submit the application? It takes time to process and yours is not the only case. Check with the school or call SEAB directly.
