    • RE: Mrs Lee Math Tuition - Discussion

Don’t be agitated. You may be Mrs Lee’s fan or someone related to her or even Mrs Lee! Btw I am a parent and my job is not a tutor at all. Don’t simply jump into conclusion and blocked me out from telling the truth. Some students may work well with her but not all 100%. You may not know that the child has been humiliated and my colleague chose to be silent and do not want to post anything here. So don’t silent me too…

    • RE: Mrs Lee Math Tuition - Discussion

If your child is not from TOP schools and / or above average, please do not waste time sending your child to Mrs Lee. My colleague’s child was ‘forced’ to quit Mrs Lee’s tuition. He told me initially Mrs Lee informed the child if did not understand then asked her. After the child attended the tuition, Mrs Lee reluctant to teach or answered the child questions. What’s the use of attending Mrs Lee’s tuition if she just want to teach the smart and above average just to enlighten her teaching. Please do not fire me when I am just telling the truth to the parents. Don’t just listen to one side. You can keep on trying with her… that is your choice.

    • RE: Lower Secondary Science

      Dr.Daniel:
      TeaBoh:

Will Sec 1 Science (Bio, Chemistry and Physics) be tested again in Sec 2 and Sec 3?

The short answer to this question is Yes.

Sec 1 Science covers the foundational topics. Sec 2 and Sec 3 also build on this foundation. In some cases the topics are separate. For example in physics it is typical for Sec 1 to cover Newtonian mechanics topics such as speed, forces and pressure (as well as other topics). In Sec 2 a typical topic is electricity which won't require you to remember all your Forces and Pressure knowledge from Sec 1. But forces and pressure will come up again in Sec 3 at a harder level of difficulty (and in JC at a harder level and in University at an even harder level). I suppose the joke here would be that you always have to deal with Pressure when studying physics.

Chemistry is also very cumulative in nature. You have to understand the basic Sec 1 Elements, Compounds and Mixtures and the Periodic Table basics before moving on to Atomic Structure, Chemical Bonding, Equation writing, Mole Calculations etc that come is Sec 2 and Sec 3.

For Biology Sec 1 usually starts with cells and since so much of biology is based on things made up of cells, this as well is foundational.

So the main point that I usually make to parents of students in our classes is that for science it is very important that a student learn in a way that they will remember things from year to year. You are not only building up your factual knowledge, but hopefully you are learning how to think. This way you can analyse questions and use your own understanding to answer them, rather than the totally awful practice of copying model answers that is unfortunately so popular in many places.

:thankyou: Dr Daniel for answering my question.

Suggest rolled oats. Lowers high cholesterol, blood pressure and sugar well. Even doctors are impressed by the readings pre and post rolled oats diet.

Rolled oats? Where can it be purchased? How to cook? Is it really effective? Any evidence that you can share with us ?

      Hi,

Any recommendation of good English Tuition for Secondary One in West side like Bukit Timah, Bukit Batok, Jurong, etc? Thank you. 😄

If you don't mind of distance, I can recommend olevelenglish tuition at orchard plaza. My child is attending his regular English tuition class on weekend and has shown improvement in summary writing, comprehension and Compo. Is a small class. Don't go to a class tuition with more than 20 students in a class. My child previously attended one English tuition in Upper Serangoon (void deck hdb shop lot) and found it so cramp and too many students in a small lot class. According to the male receptionist, this is their strategy to get more students to their tuition centre as many parents believed in number of students attending the tuition centre. My child does not like their teaching styles and crampness.

At olevelenglish, my child starts to gain confidence as this tuition teacher is teaching them the skills to answer. You can google their website to find out more if you are interested.

Are this subjects in Science stream or Art Stream? (Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Econ)

These subjects are offered at A Levels -

      Physics/Chemistry/Biology/Maths - Science subjects
      Economics - Humanities subject

So if you take a combi like PCME or BCME, you are considered a Science student

But if you take a combi like ELL/E/H/M, you are considered a Arts student

The third alternative will be a Hybrid combi.

All students are required to take a contrasting subject for A levels.

      Hi zbear

Thank you for sharing such info.

      Warmest regards

From MOE website, it stated cut-off point for L1R5 (with Bonus) for JC, does this means after deducting the bonus points for CCA and HMT or before deducting?

      MommyDearest:
Thank you slmkhoo, starlight1968sg, sieg and zbear for your sharings. Very helpful indeed !

@slmkhoo: My DD is in IP track, taking year 3 in 2016. Hence, only pure sciences are offered to her. She already has a targeted course to take at the uni and it seems like taking double sciences (without Biology) is the way to go for her because it's her preference. In addition, this will lead her to taking the JC subject combination of PCME (Physics, Chemistry, Math & Econs) which is the most versatile combination, leading to any courses in the local universities, including Medicine, Law, Engineering and Accountancy. This is a safe route, just in case she does not get into her targeted course in uni, at least she has a generic subject combination to land her in the next best course.

I agree with starlight196sg that science subjects do require foundation from Secondary level before one can elect them at JC level. My DS is currently in JC2 Science, sitting for A levels this year, so I know. In my DS's school, to qualify for H2 Sciences, student hv to offer a passing grade at O levels/IP Yr4. Those who took combined Sciences at O-Level, they must have obtained A1 or A2. In addition, those who wish to take up H2 Biology at JC level should preferably obtain a min. grade of B3 in English Language at O-Level or a D for Language Art for IP students.

Almost similar criterias applies to electing H2 Math at JC level. Arts students without A Math background will only be offered H1 Math. Bridging program will be offered to science students with no A Math background so as to be able to cope with the rigour of the subject.

However, Biology (as I realised recently) may be necessary if student wishes to pursue Medicine overseas as some universities abroad still insist on it.

Coming back to my initial question of whether to take double / triple pure sciences, my concern is on whether a student has added advantage over other applicants when applying for medicine course in LOCAL university if Biology is one of the subjects used in the application (in place of Physics), apart from Chemistry which is A MUST in the application. Can anyone advise ?
Note: My DD prefers Physics and Chemistry but doesn't mind taking up Biology if necessary.

      Mind to enlighten me?
