One of the most common mistakes before enlistment is either overpacking or missing small but important items. The confusion usually comes from not knowing what SAF already provides. So here’s a clear breakdown.

What SAF provides:

• Uniforms and boots
• Field equipment and training gear
• Bedding (mattress, pillow, blanket)
• Basic admin necessities like name tags

In short, SAF covers everything related to training and official duties. Your son won’t need to worry about any of that.

What SAF doesn’t provide — and what recruits actually need: This is where most parents get caught off guard. The official packing list covers the basics, but there are small daily-use items that recruits only realise they need after they’re already in camp.

• Laundry: SAF doesn’t provide hangers or detergent. Wet uniforms pile up fast in a cramped bunk. Multi-clip hangers and detergent packets are essential.
• Hygiene on the go: There isn’t always time to shower after PT. Cooling wipes make a real difference on long training days.
• Foot care: Blisters are almost guaranteed in the first few weeks. Blister plasters and heel protectors should go in before day 1, not after.
• Muscle recovery: Soreness after PT sessions is intense, especially in the first two weeks. A muscle relief cream helps recruits recover overnight.
• Sun and insect protection: Outdoor training happens daily. Sunscreen and insect repellent are things most recruits forget until they really need them.
• Shower organisation: Communal bathrooms mean your son needs a waterproof shower bag to carry his toiletries safely.

The gap nobody talks about:
The SAF packing list tells you what’s required. It doesn’t tell you what makes daily life in camp manageable. Most recruits figure this out the hard way by struggling through the first week without the right items.
