Mr Opto, I think the jury is still out when it comes to axial length changes. Look at this study - http://www.iovs.org/content/51/12/6262.full
Seems like it can be reversed and more research is needed. Ophthalmologists and optometrists contradict each other somehow. Alternative treatments from Leo Angart etc is meant to relax the eye muscles.
I think atropine helps with the eye muscle ... tiredness causes the eye ball to stretch. Scleral growth and choroidal weakness might be due to genetics ... so unfortunately with near work / less sunlight / outdoor time ... the human eye elongates more.

RE: All About Kids' Eye-sight
I attended Leo Angart's talk and bought his book. I bought a few other books too ... Dave Angelly says about the same thing (add defocus exercises) ... almost all focus on relaxing the eyes. For Leo ... myopia is mainly reversed by wearing lower prescription glasses and doing pranic healing (i.e. energy exercises). I asked him many questions but he said relaxation and eye focusing will help with axial length reduction. Very skeptical ... but the theory does make sense though still not proven by any study ... some people have recovered from stroke with amazing advances in physiotherapy. I believe atropine does the same thing ... relaxing the eye muscles ... it may even stop eyeball growth. The strange things is his videos and interviews claim so many people have reduced their myopia ... am not sure if its true or just actors. Watch this for some of his explanations - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4-8jkXJ5lQ
Anyway ... my plan is atropine 0.01% drops until DS reaches 11 and then use Ortho-K. I have seen the devastation of retinal issues with some friends. If you have high power please visit a retinal surgeon for checks once a year.
Science has still no proper explanation for myopia ... I've read a few medical journals too. Genetics and environment play an important role but why can't we fix it by now? Why not enough research? There must be a solution somewhere in the near present ... but until then we parents have to keep researching and pushing

RE: All About Kids' Eye-sight
Hi ... things have got worse for my DS. He jumped 150 deg in one year ... its 650 deg each eye now and he's only 7. Am going for atropine 0.01% ... appointment with Dr Yvvone Ling in SNEC.
We tried myovision lenses, eye exercises, reduce reading / TV / iPad, evenings in park etc. Both me and wife are high myopes so its prob genetics and environment. Its frustrating when we come across 'experts' who promote eye exercises like Power Vision Forum (http://www.powervisionforum.com/forum/forum.php) and Leo Angart (http://www.vision-training.com/). I even attended some of these seminars and bought countless books.
Has anyone had similar experience with their kids? Did atropine help slow the progress and stabilize?
Any other methods that work?
Thanks in advance for sharing. Any advice is much appreciated

RE: Bates Method: Eye Exercises
[quote=\"cimman\"]my sister tried the eye exercises promoted by Leo Angart:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/3937553088/ref=s9_simh_gw_p14_d0_g14_i2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=14QSY00RD5DFGTY58YM9&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846
her child, a P4 kid, did the exercises for 1 week and her myopia went down from 400 degrees to 200. You have to do the exercises every hour on the hour for a week though. Each exercise just takes a few minutes, but it is tiring.
Once there is an improvement, the frequency of the exercises can be dropped to a few times a week, rather than every hour.
I'm wondering if the effect is permanent though. Anyway will be monitoring.

Hi ... just wondering if it helped your sisters child ... did it stabilise? I notice this post more than a year. My DS is facing same issue with worsening myopia. Please share. -
RE: All About Kids' Eye-sight
hi … just to update. we tried myovision for my son … and minimal increase last one year +25 each eye. My daughter however increased by +150 each eye in one year. There’s no real explanation … we try 1 hour in park every evening, nightly eye exercise, controlled TV and no close reading.
Will try atropine end of this year if big power increase. Anyone heard of new atropine 0.1% or 0.01%?? This smaller dosage will not have glare it seems.
There’s also Australian research on myopic defocus helps reverse axial length of eyeball … I think its very promising … maybe a cure in future. We should start doing it now … -
RE: All About Kids' Eye-sight
actually … there are specific genes that predisposes us to myopia (esp chinese). so when the enviroment is ‘right’ - i.e. closed env, reading too much, not much outdoors … this gene triggers the eye to be myopic and elongates …
so when we say our parents don’t have myopia … thats not exactly true … because the environment didn’t trigger myopia gene in them. some ppl just don’t have the genes for myopia and remain without glasses however much they read or stay indoors.
so the whole idea is to change the enviroment and make our kids eyes relax … stress due to blurring, over studying and strain causes the myopia to increase. myopia is prevented when kids are outdoors it seems (atropine and ortho-k does the same it seems). until gene theraphy is proven or some new breakthrough eye drops (without side effects) … we are at nature’s mercy … and more questions … -

my ds -4/-4.5 age 5 and dd age 8 has astig 250 ... so many conflicting theories ... both me & wife are high myopes ... ds and dd loves to read (not much tv or video games).hi
does any of ur dd or ds have shortsightedness at age 4?
any success stories of treating using eye machine, bates specs, tcm massage eg raffles hosp, or other methods?
is it true that if high power is diagnosed for young aged kids with normal method, we shd let them go hosp to put eye drops to find out real shortsightedness degree?
my youngest dd only k1, 4plus but diagnosed with at least 200+ myopia but was advised to go put eye drops first. she seldom on tv and not a book worm. both me n dh are bespectacled. is that the reason?
SOS!
both kids now using myovision lense from carl zeiss (since Jan) ... there's also another myopia control lense myopilux from essilor. not really sure the effectiveness ... eye check in a few weeks. we're taking them out to park every evening and nightly eye exercise. glasses only used 1/2 day.
if any power increase we'll start them on weekend atropine first ... and am just starting to read this book - 'The Secret of Perfect Vision: How You Can Prevent and Reverse Nearsightedness By David De Angelis' -
RE: All About Kids' Eye-sight
I just got this interesting book - \"secret of perfect vision\" by david de angelis ... its explains a lot ... halfway reading. anyone read this before??
here's the web links:
