Yes SST has 200 in waitlist to fill up all places. By time PSLE results are out, all places not taken up by the confirmed offers will go to those on waitlist.
But then SST has enough to fill up the places from it's waitlist, leh.traineeks:
There will be some who had previously accepted SST and now have stellar PSLE results who will try to transfer out to a IP school.
Anyway, those with stellar results need not worry at all. There will be many IP schools who will gladly welcome them thru the PSLE posting or thru the appeal process. Many of these schools have about 50% of places for students with good PSLE results.
But the appeal process starts now or after the PSLE posting results. So some with stellar results may then appeal to schools like RI or HCI. Some with 260+ may also apply directly to NUSH which still have vacancies for PSLE applicants. Once they are successful, there will be some vacancies in SST. To fill these vacancies, SST will also have students who did not succeed in DSA appealing to get in. In deciding who gets in thru the appeal process, SST is not obliged to admit those still on its waitlist. It will be the sole discretion of SST who gets in thru the appeal process. It is anyone's guess if they will admit someone on the waitlist list or someone with stellar PSLE results. -

The enthusiastic response means that those with stellar PSLE scores but who did not apply through the DSA are likely to be turned away.

RE: Which 6 year direct program will admit T score of 258?
AWSP:
My son got 258 - this is dicey but would like to know which school will he be able to \"scrape\" through to for the 6 year program? suggestions?
Last year River Valley COP was 254; Hwa Chong 259; NJC 259. So, no harm trying for these schools. -
RE: 2009 GEP Screening And Selection
Fairy:
By HC, are you refering to Chinese High (which merged with HCJC later)
Sorry, HC was never on par with RI. The current HCI is a different story. In the old days, HC was just another secondary school with a strong Chinese culture whereas RI (secondary) has all along been a top boys' school.
HCJC used to be a top JC during my time, not RJC. It was more difficult to get a place at NJC & TJC than RJC then. With the merger of HC & HCJC, the status of HC has been elevated due to the good name of HCJC. NYGH has always been one of the top schools, but still ''lose\" to RGS.
As for the current RI (JC), I believe its status has been elevated by the calibre of the students from RI (sec) & RGS.
I recall many years ago, there were some years when Chinese High was better than RI in the 'O levels' performance ranking and they were consistenly among the top 4.

RE: Choose Secondary school for 2010
CrazyDad:
With the cream of the crop going to RI/RGS/HCI/NYGS, NUSH is probably left with the 2nd or 3rd tier students.
By the way, most if not all of the \"Cream\" normally ends up in the top 4; RI/RGS/HCI/NYGS.
Despite that, and despite being smaller in size, they have been regularly and consistently winning math and science awards at national and international competitions. This year, they won top school for A* talent search, was top school for junior maths olympics and won awards at many other international olympics. These winning do not seem to be a one time affair but happening with regularity.
These awards are traditionally the domain of the top 4 schools (RI/RGS/HCI/NYGS). These 4 traditional powerhouses are slowly seeing many of their awards in the academic areas of maths and science taken or shared by NUSH, a new kid on the block. Given the competitive nature of these 4 schools, it would be interesting to see how these schools prepare themselves to meet the new competition. -

I agree that networking and \"kwan xi\" has its influence but I think there is much more to networking and kwan xi than just being a alumni.
Ha ha! Looks like we are living in different world
In my world, everything is \"Kwan Xi\".
Networking is not only required in the business;
you need that even if were a teacher,
or a scientist.
Look at Einstein, he needs \"kwan Xi\" to work in the patent office in his early year.
Are these NUSH graduates better than the mighty Einstein? -

Simple lah. Do what a kiasu parent would do...think what scholarship or career he would take in future, so...wormy:
My child is facing the dilemma - HCI/RI/NUSH - To put it simply, it just seems to be a \"waste\" if he does not choose RI, which is seen by most as the top sec school. I know this comment would attract a lot of feedback and please do so for I need enlightenment. For NUSH, my worries is that should he lose passion in Math/Science midway through the course, then what's exit path? HCI - have to compete with PRC kids, am I right?
:celebrate: So, what drives your kid to excellence? Very competitive type, wanting to be the best? It takes a lot of self-determination and courage to compete with the best and not easily discouraged when losing out to others.
If he excels best when he does not need to compete with others, NUS High would be more suitable. Also what does he hope to be when he grows up? Become a scientist, lecturer, researcher? NUS High is the place.
Perhaps get your kid to go for a DISC test to determine what qualities and temperament he has might help.
If want to be A* scholar...
choose NUSH. They won top school for A* talent search this year.
If want to be president scholar---
choose HCI. HCI claims to produced the most number of president scholars. Don't know if this claim still holds.. RI will probably refute that.
If want to be top lawyer...
choose RI. Country attorney general, best known criminal lawyer all from RI.
If want to join politics or be PM..
choose school that produced the most PM. Of course getting used to wearing all white from young is another plus.
Just joking here. I agree with david59 that you find the environment that best suits your kid. All 3 three schools differ little in terms of academic performance but they all have quite different environments. Visit the schools and you can form impressions of culture and what drives the students in each school. Once you make a choice, do not think of \"wasted\" opportunities but try to fit in and be happy. After all he has to spend 6 years there. -

CrazyDad:
These guys are suppose to be the cream of the crop. They do not need alumni to take care of them in the working world. If they need that, then the school have not trained them well. In the real working world it does not work that way, only the fittest survive - alumni has little or no impact.
Looks like it is true that NUSH does not care much about languages. But I still prefer my kid to go to schools with longer history where they will have senior or alumni to take care of them in the working world. And during school life, they can enjoy cheering for their school team. That kind of normal life style which I used to enjoy.
I can understand if they need guidance and seniors to care for them during their school life. Comparing HCI/RI/NUSH, HCI is perhaps the best known in this aspect.
