there are some every detailed facebook explanations on the English Paper 2 yesterday in this youtube link. Heard from the Branch that my DD is enrolled that there will be more progressively over the week for all subjects.

The answer to the S/T question \"The way Ginny...\" is incorrect.
It should be - The way Ginny dealt with ... (NOT \"was dealing with...\")

      TheSolver:
In reply to pashio636, it would be preferable if you put British spelling, but if you put American spelling and your entire paper is also written in America spelling, then it should be fine (but because teachers mark by section and not by script, it may cause some complications if you write in American spelling).

For the leakage of the tap question, shouldn't it be 'The pipe is leaking(,) resulting in a wastage of water.'

During the PSLE marking exercise, both American spelling and British spelling are accepted. In fact, all standard varieties are accepted . This is stated very clearly in the PSLE information booklets / EL Syllabus given to all English HODs and schools. I was a marker and a supervisor in the marking of PSLE English for 18 years. It's pure nonsense that there must be consistency in the usage of one variety over the other (s). If it is true that only British English is allowed, why then do teachers and students use American English vocab such as \"elevator\" & \"vacation\"?

There are many standard varieties . Singapore Standard English is one such variety. If the kids were learning the British variety, they would be speaking like the Queen! If teachers were teaching the British variety, they would be teaching the RP (Received Pronunciation) / the Queen's English instead.
Wrong question number -> 18 marks deducted? :nailbite: Really?

Actually, I think that if you write the wrong question number (eg. you write \"1\" instead of \"2\"), the markers should be able to understand that you meant \"2\" judging from the content. If you write \"3\" as the question number, the markers will help you judge from the content in the compo.

She said her teacher told her that. 😓

Ya, not to worry. My dd wrote the wrong question number for the English compo. After submitting the scripts, she then told the inviligilator. The inviligator told her it s ok, the markers will know. 😓

加油 all the kids and parents!! :celebrate:
Agree. It is a genuine error made and the marker should not penalized on the child for putting the wrong qn no. Not to worry and just ask yr child to concentrate for Sci paper . 😄
Don't worry, your child won't be penalised. Some teachers love to \"scare\" kids and propagate falsehood (such as kids getting penalised if they use American English in the PSLE).

Not sure about this....but DD's Eng tr would mark the class wrong when they spelt colour as color, neighbour as neighbor, realise as realize.

I personally felt unfair as our children expose to US novels and shows . They may learn this words through reading .
Don't worry about this because American English is acceptable in the PSLE. In fact, it is stated explicitly in the PSLE Information Booklet issued to school. Unfortunately I cannot upload a picture of this but if you may want to check with your kid's English HOD. What I can do here is to quote verbatim -

Speak, write and represent in internationally acceptable English (Standard English) that is grammatical, fluent, mutually intelligible and appropriate for different purposes ...

Understand and use internationally acceptable English (Standard English) grammar and vocabulary accurately and appropriately...

In 2013, both \"practised\" (British English) and \"practiced\" (American English) were listed in the Compre Cloze mark scheme at the PSLE marking exercise. Teachers who were involved in the marking of Paper 2 last year would know this fact.

Hi ASLMUm, i think they will consider for as long as the child used american english throughout the entire paper. They will check for consistency.

Thanks MommyM. Quite worrying. DS keeps insisting it is acceptable but i would think in Singapore, we generally use the British version.

Yes, both American English spelling and British English spelling are accepted in the PSLE. This is clearly spelt out in the PSLE Information Booklet issued to schools and English HODs. I was an English HOD for many years before I left the system. I was a supervisor at the PSLE marking exercise for years. If American English isn't accepted in the PSLE, why do teachers and pupils use American English vocabulary such as \"apartment\" , \"cookies\" , \"movie\" , \"vacation\" and \"elevator\" instead of \"flat\", \"biscuits\" , \"film\", \"holiday\" and \"lift\" (only)? A lot of teachers and parents have this misconception that our kids are learning British English in school. We are actually using Standard Singapore English in school, not British English or American English.

      Instil - British version
      Instill - American version

DD’s answer : inculcate the value of perserverance
American English is acceptable in the PSLE. It’s a misperception that we use British English in Singapore, we actually don’t . I always laugh when teachers tell their pupils that the kids are learning British English in school. We don’t . We use Singapore Standard English here, not British English. American English is acceptable in the PSLE. If we are learning / using British English, why then do teachers teach American English vocabulary such as "apartment" and "elevator"? Why do our teachers not speak with a British accent if they are teaching British English in school? I was an English HOD for many years and supervised the marking of the PSLE English papers ( both paper 1 & paper 2) for years and as far as I know, whenever there’s a variant to the spelling of a word, both are accepted. In the PSLE mark scheme and PSLE Information Booklet issued to all schools and English HODs, it’s stated clearly that it’s ok to use any form of standard English.
