      The temperature cannot suddenly plunge to 10 degrees within 2 minutes, or lose heat to the surrounding within a short period of time, unless ice cubes are dropped into the water.

      how to go about answering this question ?

      some ice cubes / ice water / cold water has been added to the beaker.

      the answer is straight forward. many questions in p5 and p6 test papers are similar like this.

      one possible answer is... the hot water was kept inside the freezer.[/quote]for such questions, students are supposed to think that heat is constantly applied to the water so putting in the freezer is not possible....

      this question is taken from Nanchiau P5 SA2 2012.

      Can somebody help to answer ? thanks 😓

      Wendy had 2 bags of rice, A and B, weighing 88 kg altogether.
      The bags contained different amount of rice. Wendy poured 1/3 of the rice from bag A to bag B. Then she poured 1/5 of the rice from bag B bag A, As a result, both bags had the same
      How much rice was there in bag A at first?
      working backwards method :
      88 / 2 = 44kg (weight in the end)

      in B :
      1 - 1/5 (to A) = 4/5
      4/5 --> 44kg
      1/5 --> 11kg
      5/5 --> 55kg (weight of B after 1/3 of A is transferred to B)

      88 - 55 = 33kg (weight of A after 1/3 transferred to B)
      2/3 of A --> 33kg
      1/3 of A --> 16.5kg
      3/3 of A --> 49.5kg (A at first)

      hi all,

      2011-MGS-SA2-Paper2
      Qn17
      M, N, O shared the cost of rental flat. M paid 2/5 of the total amount paid by N and O. The ratio of the amount paid by N to the total amount paid by M and O is 1:3.
      (a) what is the ratio of the rent paid by M to N to O? (8:7:13)
      (b) given that M paid $35 more than N, how much rent did the 3 girls pay for the flat? (Ans:$980)
      thank you
      hi, offering my help :

      M paid 2/5 of the total amount paid by N and O.
      M : N + O
      2 : 5 ------ x 4

      The ratio of the amount paid by N to the total amount paid by M and O is 1:3
      N : M + O
      1 : 3 ------- x 7

      both ratios are constant total. (1st ratio x 4, 2nd ratio x 7)

      therefore :
      M : N + O
      8 : 20

      N : M + O
      7 : 21

      M : N : O
      8 : 7 : 13 (ans for a)

      M : 8u
      N : 7u
      8u - 7u = 1u
      1u --> $35
      8u + 7u + 13u = 28u
      28u --> $980 (ans for b)

    • RE: 2013 School Holiday shorten?

      nms1:
      verykiasumummy:

      i dun like shorter holidays... i prefer longer cos it means more time for kids to rest n play...

      we usually go for 2 weeks yr end holiday, and after come back still hv 1 mth to self study to catch up next yr syllabus.. when sch reopen, everything will be so rush and busy... i prefer longer ones... anyone here same mindset as me?

      I think for most families with working parents the longer the holiday, the bigger the problem. We can't take leave for the whole school holidays which means the children are either at home bored (if you have someone to look after them) or we are spending money to send them to camps etc. to keep them busy. I agree that they need a break but I would prefer it to be a bit shorter. We have already had so many days of school being closed this term and the holidays haven't even started.

      I went to school in the UK where we had 6 weeks in the summer but as it was summer we would go and stay with my grandparents by the sea or if we were at home we would be playing outside all day every day. You don't see Singapore children do that much and it's not safe now to let them play outside alone.

      maybe that's true for many parents here... for me, i stop camps and enrichments for them as i want them to self study at home with me... i hv relatives offering to bring them out now and then so i dun really take leave to stay at home with them...

      I think the main thing to conclude from the contributions here is that it's different strokes for different folks. As long as both are happy with the arrangement, the family is fed and clothed, with some savings and reasonable debt, there is no one-size-fits-all method. For me, I dislike numbers, trust my husband and have no income (SAHM), so I'm happy to let my husband deal with the family finances. He will discuss major items with me before making decisions, but I act mainly as a sounding board. He makes sure I have some accessible funds and investments in my own name too. I just use what I need for family and personal expenditure, and so far we haven't had issues. A good thing is that we both have similar spending and saving patterns, so we don't disagree on most expenditure.

      Yah, agree. For DH and myself, we have different spending habits. I will splurge on stuff like food, books. DH is forever complaining that eating out is expensive or why should we pay so much for a mango. He will however not think twice about buying the latest bestest gadgets or toys. So it works well for us that we manage our finances separately.

      same for my dh... there's this special smell about mango that many ppl like... no choice but to pay more to enjoy it...
