Dear Autolycus,

Any idea how ACSI select their year 1 prefect ?

      Hi worried parent2012,

      It goes something like this:

      1) Around August, nominations begin. Either teachers/CCA teachers can do the nominations. In the past, I believe a student can nominate another. (not sure about this yr though).

2)Then each nominee has to get 10 teachers (inclusive of CCA teachers) for their assessments. (basically a 2-paged form for the teachers to tick and submit to the Prefect master)

      3) Nominees who passed the assessment round will proceed to the PSC (prefects selection camp) which used to be a 3-days camp. Traditionally, it's during Sept hols. But this year, it has been shifted to after the yr end exams.

      4) The nominees will be assessed by seniors and prefect masters during the camp and those who passed the PSC round will be put on duty at various spots on a daily basis (mentored by senior prefects) for about a month to have a taste of it.

      5) The selected nominees after the above phase will be invested as Assistant Prefects during Prefects investiture in February next yr.

      cheers!

      Hi Breezy,

I think this year the nominee needs to get 3 teachers (inclusive of the CCA teachers) for their assessments. I may be wrong. Please advise.

Hi wp2012, in theory there is a process that includes input from students and teachers. In practice, it is somewhat random, as I've observed from looking at the kinds of prefects we get out of it. The best process we ever ran was the one starting with the S3 overseas trip — that one, if done properly, produces enough material for a 10-page dossier. However, not enough teachers are trained in qualitative research methodology to collect useful observations.

So, to conclude, don't be worried. It might be a blessing to let your son ease his way into the complicated world of adolescent leadership... šŸ™‚

      Thanks Autolycus.

      Hi All,

Does anyone know when is the prefectorial camp for year 1 held? I was told it will be held during the September school holiday. Find it a bit queer as it seems the June holiday would be a better choice.

The long June and December holidays are always a bad choice, because different students will want to be off on holidays with their families at different times, and this may even be true of the staff, who in practice only get about 2 weeks off during a long holiday — and not always a predictable 2 weeks.

      Cheers!

      OIC. Thanks. :boogie:

      Hi autolycus,

Any idea what is the percentage or number of our IB kids who make it to our local medical school ?

It would be nice if we have these number year by year.

      Thanks
Hi autolycus,

I was wondering if last year IB graduates who scored well 42-45, did they manage to secure a place in the top universities in States or UK ? Hopefully our IB programs are well received by these countries. Could you point me to where i can research on these ? I would also be interested to know where our top IB graduates from the previous year (graduates from 2010) went to . Thanks.

For those who proceed to oversea top unni, are they on scholarship or mostly pay themselve their? For the past years around what percent of IB students actually go oversea top unni? Or majority still landed in NUS or NTU?

For some reason, ACS(I) doesn't release full results. The picture is complicated by people who stay in Singapore for a) a gap year, taking classes or internships before going overseas; b) professional education (law, medicine especially); and c) basic degrees before going overseas for postgrad. It is also complicated by students who change institutions and thus graduate from a different place.

A large percentage of students from ACS do go overseas, regardless whether they are IB students or not. But I can tell you that my sample includes a larger-than-usual number of admissions to top-10 UK and top-20 US institutions.

As for scholarships, it depends on what you mean. Most US universities give some sort of grant; in the UK, all SG students are entitled to a Commonwealth scholarship over and above any other scholarship they might have. If you mean full scholarships, the majority of students with those are from Raffles and Hwa Chong (about 2/3) — that's because ACS(I) graduates only 450 students a year.
Thanks for the reply.
