      iFirefly:
Which is the nearest MRT station to Nan Chiau High ? Is it within 5-10 minutes of walking distance from the school ?

      Thank you..
The MRT station is about 10 mins walk to the school, but no shelter. Even though there's a LRT station very near to the sch, my son actually prefers to walk from the MRT station because he feels that he spends more time waiting for the LRT. He also thinks it's good exercise 😂 .

There's a bus 50 from Bishan interchange to a bus stop two traffic lights from NCHS. There's also bus 163 from Upper Thomson rd to a bus stop next to the school.

Go to http://www.transitlink.com.sg/eservice/how2go/h2g.php to help you find bus/mrt routes.

How is the Nan Chiao High compares to CHIJ St Nicholas? I will be moving to Sengkang in 2 years, but now staying near St Nich. Do they have Track and Field? In dilemma. My daughter just finished her PSLE.

You can go to this website http://sis.moe.gov.sg/ to check out the schools you're interested in. St. Nic has a higher PSLE admission score. Their CCA groups have also been getting better results.

It's actually not difficult to get from Seng Kang to St. Nicholas. There's a bus 136 from Seng Kang interchange to Yio Chu Kang road. From there, you can take one of the 26* feeder buses to St. Nicholas. But your kid would have to sacrifice her sleep.

IIRC, the open house last year was for 2 days - same day as the PSLE results were released, and the day after. There were student councilors to give us a short school tour and teachers were around for Q&A. If you go for the school fun fair, you could probably get a feel of the school culture, but I don’t think you’ll be able to ask questions regarding the school. Any way, no harm to take a closer look inside the school. This is especially so since most Sec Sch open houses are on the same day after PSLE results are released, and you may not have time to visit all the schools that you are interested in.

      Milderina:
I thought we cannot gather outside the class room?
Not directly outside the classroom, further distance away. I remember \"spying\" on my elder girl's class from outside the canteen. But the school has planned talks for the parents this coming Thursday, so I guess we won't be able to do that.

Yup, supposed to bring 好公民 on the first day. Probably have to be kiasu and rush to the bookshop as soon as it opens. I tried buying at Popular in Ang Mo Kio, also out of stock.

BTW, my girl will be in 1-5.

Hi Milderina, my youngest will also be in P1 (2014). There isn’t much active discussion in this forum thread. If you want to network with other parents, 2 Jan will be a good opportunity. Most parents will gather outside their kids’ classrooms. A lot of of parents also talk to one another while waiting for their kids outside the school gates.

      smileplease:
If any child choose Nan Chiau as 1st choice in S1 posting with score 250 and above, must go to the general office and apply the S$800 special award given by the school.

This is enough to pay 4 years school fee and buy Sec 1 textbooks.
Is the 250 including or excluding HCL?

    • RE: All About Preparing For Secondary One

Seems like most people complained about Literature, History & Geography being the "difficult" subjects in Sec 1. Just curious about those of u who complained, were u in the Arts or Science stream in your own time? I preferred science subjects and never did well for the Humanities during secondary school, dropped them like hot potatoes in JC. I’m wondering for those who scored A’s for Humanities subjects, if they were inclined to them from Sec 1, or did they also struggle at the beginning, like everyone else.

BTW, $6-8 per day (excluding transport) is A LOT to me. I don’t even frequently spend so much on lunch myself. To be frank, I don’t want my kids to be able to save so much money that they can afford to splurge at fast food outlets n restaurants with friends. I’m amazed at the number of kids i see at these places during lunch times.

    • RE: HCL- To-Take or Not-To-Take

      Skyed:
In JC the minimum subject requirements is 10 academic units, which pretty much all Singaporeans will be able to fulfill: 3H2 + 1H1 + GP + PW + HCL = 10. As long as you have taken HCL in secondary, it will be automatically counted into your academic units even if you are no longer taking it in JC.

Sorry, I'm still confused. So if someone has passed HCL in sec sch, he'll only have to do 3H2 + 1H1 + GP + PW = 9 academic units (AU). He doesn't have to do another H1 or H3 subject to make up 10AU?

      zeemimi:
If pass HMT, in JC no need to attend chinese class. considered as having fulfilled MOE's reqm for mother tongue. Just take other relevant subjects as per other students taking MT in JC.

Several people mentioned that without having to study Chinese in JC, the student can spend more time on other subjects. But if one has to take another subject in JC to make up the minimum subject requirements, then there's no benefit to pass HMT in secondary school right (besides the -2 points for L1R5)? At least Chinese is a familiar subject, so why not do Chinese at A-level instead of studying an unfamiliar subject or even a contrasting subject that one might be weak at?
