Heard nhps tends to set hard qns or has stringent marking till most of her pupils (in top mainstream classes) fail P5 SA1 - Is it true?

It is more geared towards the teachers started to follow with PSLE standard of marking especially for science and maths papers. There are certain PSLE guidelines that all upper primary teachers need to follow in term of awarding marks. Students may write a lot for science but the points may be redundant which lead to marks being deducted or vice versa. It is good to let the students to get use to such marking rather than in P6. If students who are so used to the lenient marking from lower primary teachers will have a rude shock when the marks started to drop significantly. Please note P4 to P5 is a steep jump especially from Chinese, Maths and Science. Science has a whole different answering techniques that students need to master. If students met a strict teacher, they should not be depair. They should be grateful as these teachers tend to drill the students to right path in getting full marks for PSLE. By end of the year, most P5 students should be able to get used to it and scored. A strict teacher shapes a good student.

    • RE: 2018 PSLE Discussions & Strategies (Born in 2006)

Already stress after knowing HOD taking over as the subject teachers. Why does school allocate HOD to teach P6 when HOD is packed with admin and meeting with HQ etc? The students will suffer. When HOD not around relief take over which most likely will just ask the class to do their own work. How to complete all the topics by Jun. They are most likely to do like a bullet train. This is really unfair… Really do not know what the school principal is thinking.

I have been adopting R&R attitude toward this Parents Sweating Laborious Exam.

So I can be a cool mum :imcool: Reading all the posts by parents here somehow alleviating my guilt. It likes a spank in my head to wake up. :heresmyfish: Now need to see how to slowly blend everything together.... Noting the efforts parents here had made, look like i need a super blender quickly.

    • RE: National Junior College (Junior High)

I guess they would use the academic results to select the students for round 1 as they ask for P5 and P6 SA1 results. Those with special talents can list them out in the application form. I think this is good for humble family students who have only their study to compete since primary school education is compulsory. Their parents may not have the extra money to send them to badminton, swimming etc for extra learning to develop the other talents. This provide them an equal opportunity to shine. More schools should look into this way.

Finally, there is a school that truly forgo all results whether one won how many golds in the academic fields or track and fields or on stage. NJC DSA is open for all students. All students can apply as no academic results or CCA records or any documentation is required. It is like Singapore Got Talent show except they are opened for all races and nationality. This is really cool. This will give the students from humble background a chance to shine and let the coaches or teachers to judge truly by talents. NJC way to GO! But poor teachers and coaches may need to stay back to sieve out the talents if a swarm of > 10K students turn up to apply.

(Hopefully, parents will not go and complain about the entry level for local university and they re-look and introduce something like DSA. If start with another type of DSA, this will be very crappy and make our university look so pale off compared to top university in the world.)

Top universities look at more than just academics in their admission. They certainly don't have \"cut-off points\". Might as well get used to it earlier.

Why not do it now? Scrap off all DSA. There is no such things as DSA in the past.Let the children get used to it now. Hard work is needed. How Joseph did it through hard work and delicate parents that understand what their son's ultimate goal and sent him to the best school in the world to achieve this goal. As Mary Colin did mention in her interview, there is no such thing as talent. It's all about hard work. If you believe your children are capable, put them to the best school in the world. Why in Singapore? We have yet to be able to provide good facility to develop excellent athletes and musicians/ artists.

Does DSA effective? Student A has no special talent, can’t DSA in any IP school depend on PSLE results. He/she managed to score 258 (so-called borderline cut-off for top IP school). But the new rule stated 20% of the vacancy to keep for DSA talent, thus Student A can’t get into the IP school as all vacancy filled up since there are other students with better scores. Does that mean Student A will be deprived from receiving IP training totally since all vacancy of IP school has filled up? Student B is an average academic results student, all 4 subjects are barely 70 but excellent in sport, entered the IP school via DSA sport. But student B struggled to keep up with his peers in IP school since peers have very strong academics and the style of teaching in the school is to impart advance skill. Student B may have to work harder as he/ she has to self read up on the basic before understanding the advance skill. Is this effective for student B both academic and sport? Is this mentally healthy? Will this student B able to qualify to local university after A Level? (Hopefully, parents will not go and complain about the entry level for local university and they re-look and introduce something like DSA. If start with another type of DSA, this will be very crappy and make our university look so pale off compared to top university in the world.)

I’m not sure whether knowing the % of students in Tag 1 > 260 will be useful. Most probably, quite a number of these students would have gotten CO via DSA and they only need a min effort to maintain the min cut-off for IP. The information may not be well represented of the class performance.

    • RE: Any Updates As To When PSLE T-Scores Will Be Scrapped?

With such change, now the gov can truly say we need to employ foreign talents. All our students are above average but we don’t have the shinning stars. Hence, FTs really needed…
