Hey dont get demoralised!
I believe everyone of us goes thru that, some more major, some minor. And we were once their age too, making the same careless mistakes and writing horribly and making our mums angry!
Have faith in your kid. Continue to support and encourage him, cos if you dont, who will? Working with kids has many ways, if nagging doesnt work, try another. My boy is 9 too. For me i think rewards work, tho some may feel that this is spoiling the child. But whatever you think works, just do it. I dont have to bother about what other people has to say.
Let him have a blast this dec holiday. Let him know that we work hard, we play hard too. Even adults want to enjoy the fruit of labour (ie our BONUS).

RE: Lack of Sleep among S'pore Kids - pls share your views
Working mums probably share the same peeve. By the time I reach home is 7 plus. After settling down, it would have been past 8pm. And thereafter I need to go thru their schoolwork and do revision. Which is why my son only get to go to sleep ard 10pm. With this in mind, I choose a nearby neighbourhood school which starts later at 8am. We can leave the house at 730am and reach by 740am which is their assembly time. And in the afternoon, I make sure he takes a nap as he is cared for by his grandma. My child wakes up with a happy face and skip his way to school compared to the many grumpy faces I saw of other school going kids. I know my child is well rested and I can work at ease with that in mind.

RE: Travel: Australia - Perth
I used Busselton as base (stayed 2 nights) to explore MR. Left Perth in the morning ard 8am and stopped over at Bunbury at the Dolphin Discovery Centre. This place aint that interesting and the wait for the boat to go out for dolphin viewing is pretty long. Plus the counter lady mentioned that they hadn’t had any luck on the past few days, we left after 30 mins and went for a wild life park nearby instead.
After Bunbury we drove to Busselton straight, along the way we visited a couple of wineries. At Busselton do make sure you drop by Busselton Jetty! Take a walk along the jetty and have an ice cream. By evening, we are nicely settled in our stay at Busselton before night falls.
It’s a wonderful drive, we have one 7 year with us and he truly enjoyed the whole ride too. While planning beforehand is a must, in any case if you find the place not to your liking, there are surely other visits nearby worthy to go too! -
RE: How to train/ teach a kid to Reading and Learning?
My son’s reading journey started from age 1. I would read about 4 books to him every night before sleep. At the small age of 1 to 3, he fidgets, walks around, does his own things. But i do note that he actually stops and turn to me at times at a familiar part or actions (as i incorporate different tones, and some ‘actions’). This affirms to me that he is indeed listening altho his body is not facing me.
Moving on, now he is 8. We do library visits every friday evening. To him, the library visits are also a break from his usual homework and revisions. I can see he enjoys the process of reading. i have stop reading English books to him as he is picking it on his own. But I continue to read chinese stories to him. On top of that, i buy from online, from popular etc.on the books that he loves, especially when he looks for the latest copy which we would not be able to get from the library.
For some kids, the love of reading has to be developed thru continuous exposure, encouragement and guidance. Please encourage them to read or better still, read with them! -
RE: Listening to music while doing homework?
I recently started this. While son is doing homework (he is in P2) i went to youtube and put on some light relaxing music. The volume set is pretty low, more like a background music. My intent was to create a more relax environment and it also helps me to keep my cool from screaming at him as he likes to ask me without even attempting the qn.
