RE: Chiltern House
makoshark:
personally, i think the Halifax branch is good only for n1s. and guess what, we checked the kids' portfolios at the end of term, and THEY ARE ALMOST WORD FOR WORD!!! So, markoshark, you are damn right.Don't send your kids to Chiltern House Mountbatten!
How good a school depends on the branch's teachers and Centre's Head and the Mountbatten branch has one of the worst teacher I have even encountered and the Centre's head as well as her boss doesn't try to help with the situation.
.....
And do you know what?
They managed to send out the year end \"portfolio\" and wrote great things about my daughter. They wrote about how she has grown and can do many things. It was like they were writing about a totally different person.
My believe is that it was a standard report which they just change the names.
Finally, their mercenary ways showed up so clearly that photos of my daughter's field trip were not given to us even though it was out entitlement and the head happily ignored my request because I had withdrawn my daughter from the school. Do note that my request came during the period where we still pay school fees.
Don't waste your money to send your kid to this branch.
The other branches might be good but this one (especially E) is terrible.
At halifax, it is also the same. the head and her boss doesn't try to help the situation, it's like, you're in therefore you're stuck in it, withdraw-if-u-dare kinda situation. so if you get a lousy teacher, good luck to the whole class. So there you go - depends on what's your priority for a kindergarten, I guess. -

RE: Chiltern House
anxious:
Agree with anxious. Especially with the new and inexperienced teachers (and head) , the standard was not what it used to be. Even though the system is in place, the delivery is not great.Just to share my experience of CH. CH Halifax used to be one of the best - Great teachers and staff.
However, due to their rapid expansion - 2 new branches in 1+ yr, their Head of the centre left for another centre last year and several of the experienced teachers were transferred to assist to build up the new centre.
I do feel the differences now in the overall experience of the teachers in CH Halifax.
Some of the parents met with the school to discuss issues, but they were not taken seriously. Personally, I feel that the school has turned very patronising, which is very discouraging since we are paying premium fees. Fees have been increasing every year, but quality of teachers are not maintained. Sigh. Sigh. Heard that the teachers are not paid that well either, so none of the fees increase went towards retaining staff. SIgh Sigh. -
RE: Chiltern House
my son is in CH nursery 1 currently. He loves it, and the school conducts parents meeting every month, in addition to an individual parent-teacher meeting on the progress of your child.
I would think most parents at chiltern DO send their kids to further enrichment. Swimming, violin, piano, ballet, art, soccer, languages, schichida, etc. It is quite common… at least among his classmates. Also, more than half came from Julia Gabriel.
THe school is very strong in languages, building confidence, speech and drama. Like everyone else, the parents expressed concerned at one of the meetings about how Chiltern kids fare in Primary one. The principal feedback that they kept in contact with recent K2 graduates’ moms and dads, and it seems that most of the kids are doing very well - in particular, confidence, outspoken, dare to ask questions, english n maths. Frankly, we were quite surprised. and it seems even the k2’s parents are surprised. So, chiltern must be doing something right, even though syllabus is not as stringent. No matter what, the kids spend half a day there. -
RE: 1st birthday
we ‘altered’ the tradition a bit…

my mom’s version:

RE: KiasuParents Story Writing Contest #1 - Scariest Story
[Editor's note: Entry noted and will be entered in voting list.]
This really happened to me.
It was another day after my toddler’s afternoon nap, and we walked to the nearby plaza for groceries shopping. The place seemed less crowded than usual, but I put it down to the economic crisis than anything else. Before proceeding with au supermarche routine, I took him into the washroom. All the doors were slightly ajar, cold (must be the air-con) and sterile. Sensing nothing wrong, everything seems normal; we selected the door furthest away from the entrance and locked ourselves in.
It was a bright sun-lit day outside. Inside, the air was still, no music played from the stereo. Still, we took all precautions before setting off to the supermarket.
There was nobody there, except for one woman at the cashier. She was dark, unsmiling and had sticky hair. Ignoring her, I went through my list, taking each item one by one, until we finally reached the last aisle. My son reached out for something… and he suddenly stiffened. His eyes went blank, the corners of his lips curled tightly. Little beads of sweat appeared around his tiny forehead. I sensed something wrong, and turned to ask if he was OK.
He remained silent.
I did not expect it, and could not believe it when my eyes set upon the reason. Up till this day, I am still unwilling to accept the fact that was staring at me. Two brown-slicked, damp and unmoving piles built up right from the floor. The cashier stared, with her unforgiving crimson eyes, and said, \"I’ll wait for you to clean up the poop\". -

RE: Julia Gabriel - Community Thread
My son went for JG 3-times a week, Eng playnest and subsequently playclub from 13months to 22mths. He likes it, and so did I. As a first-time mom, I learnt a lot on how babies to toddlers learn, react and develop, what to look out for, what are the milestones, how to control, etc through their way of teaching. As for him, he got to play in the sand-pit, playground, water-play, paints, etc activities where he did not get to do at home. Speech and language-wise: very good. Social and other milestones: the teacher will have a chat with the parent twice (i think) every term to let you know things that they’ve noticed, or if u have any concerns to raise, etc. Like, this girl wasn’t talking much and the teacher actually told her mom it is because she herself is not communicating to her in more words than just "ball", "go". So she suggested ways of communication to help in her girl’s language development from home. So, by the end of playnest (18mths), most kids could say their own names, sing some songs. This is not a requisite I believe, but something that I observed fr my son’s class.
Not sure if the teachers are still as good, that was back in 2007-08.
