      Hi,

      Could anyone help me? Thanks in advance.

      1) Mr Wong bought 8 baskets of durians. In each basket, there were 35 durians. 2/7 of the durians were bad and he threw them away. He sold 5/8 of the good ones. How many durians had he left?

      2)Dan bought some stamps, Ali bought twice as many and they gave 1/4 of their total to Betty. Betty bought another 30 more and found that she had 126 stamps altogether. How many stamps had Dan at first?

      3)Jame spent 5/8 of his money on a dictionary and 7 pens. The cost of each pen is 1/6 of his remaining money. If the total cost of the 7 pens is sgd20 more than the cost of the dictionary, how much did James have at first?

      4) There are some books in a cupboard. 1/3 of the books are in Chinese, 6 of them are in Malay and the rest are in English. If there are 42 English books, what is the total number of Chinese and Malay books?

          Hi, can someone help me with this question...

          Each dart thrown at this target scores points according to where it hits.

          http://i42.tinypic.com/315l3zm.jpg\">

          Xavier hits the target with 3 darts and totaled his points. Which of these totals is possible?

          (1) 11
          (2) 17
          (3) 22
          (4) 26.

          the teacher give the answer as 11 without explaining. Can someone explained to me please. Thank you

            It can't possibly be 11!
            The smallest combination would be 3x3 = 9, next, 3 +3 +5 = 16

            In fact, are any of these even possible? Unless there's a typo, or hitting somewhere that would result in a zero, then this is just.....MEH

              I'm also puzzled with the answer... My daughter came back with the answer from teacher as 11, moreover the teacher didn't explained anything :slapshead:

                Hi,

                The three darts can hit any of the three combination, and their respective sum is

                3,3,3 --> 9
                3,3,5 --> 11
                3,3,8 --> 14
                3,5,5 --> 13
                3,5,8 --> 16
                3,8,8 -->19
                5,5,5 -->15
                5,5,8 --> 18
                5,8,8 --> 21
                8,8,8 --> 24

                Hence only (a) 11 .

                Regards

                      Please help with this…

                      Joyce, Perry, Tanya and Seetha shared a box of stickers.
                      After distributing all the stickers, J got thrice as many stickers as T.
                      If P gave 38 stickers to S, they would both have the same number
                      of stickers. P would then have half as many stickers as J.
                      If there were 280 stickers in the box in the end, how many stickers
                      did J and P have respectively at first.

                      So I figured out there is a total of 7u (J 3u, T 1u, P 1.5u+38, S 1.5u-38),
                      but I just couldn’t figure out how to fit 280 into the model.

                        Hi BigDevil,

                        The total is always the same at 280. So you can draw 4 models for the 4 of them and the total is 280.

                        7u --> 280
                        1 u--> 280/7=40
                        Therefore,
                        J--> 3 units-->3X40=120
                        P--> 1.5 units +38--> 98

                        Hope that helps.
