Hi, can someone help me with this question...


Each dart thrown at this target scores points according to where it hits.

Xavier hits the target with 3 darts and totaled his points. Which of these totals is possible?

(1) 11
(2) 17
(3) 22
(4) 26.

the teacher give the answer as 11 without explaining. Can someone explained to me please. Thank you

The three darts can hit any of the three combination, and their respective sum is

3,3,3 --> 9
3,3,5 --> 11
3,3,8 --> 14
3,5,5 --> 13
3,5,8 --> 16
3,8,8 -->19
5,5,5 -->15
5,5,8 --> 18
5,8,8 --> 21
8,8,8 --> 24

Hence only (a) 11 .

After distributing all the stickers, J got thrice as many stickers as T.
If P gave 38 stickers to S, they would both have the same number
of stickers. P would then have half as many stickers as J.
If there were 280 stickers in the box in the end, how many stickers
did J and P have respectively at first.


So I figured out there is a total of 7u (J 3u, T 1u, P 1.5u+38, S 1.5u-38),
but I just couldn’t figure out how to fit 280 into the model.

The total is always the same at 280. So you can draw 4 models for the 4 of them and the total is 280.

7u --> 280
1 u--> 280/7=40
Therefore,
J--> 3 units-->3X40=120
P--> 1.5 units +38--> 98

Eh??? The way I read the question is that 280 stickers were left over after distributing the stickers.


So 280 has always been the total number? That certainly makes the problem solvable.

(is there a faster way to solve this instead of drawing tables?)

You may use the “Grouping Concept”

Mr Yusoff and Mr Hong received (96 +112) or 208 durians free.

For a group of 16 durians bought, 2 durians were given away free.

208/2 ----- 104

104*16 ----- 1664

Number of durians on sale ------ 1664 + 208 + 45 ------ 1917
