2013 PSLE Discussions and Strategy

ks4kids:
Only 4 months left before psle, very stressed and worried for my DD. Started revision plan since last Oct but making very slow progress. Everyday so much homework and Supp classes. How to make it? So little time left!
Sch homework and suppl classes should be also part of the revision process.
Whenever I open the cupboard, I see many uncompleted or not yet started assessment books, I also panic for a while.
Then I calm myself down.
Just do whatever we can.
I refuse to believe the past years studying are thrown out of the window and it is a must to re-do every single topic in great details. -
Jennifer: same here. Bought a cupboard from IKEA and fill it with Guides and Assessment books but most of it are still untouched. Guess will leave them for my DS taking PSLE in 2 years time. Lesson learned, will start revision with him earlier. Not do worry for has he is doing well in school.
My DD is weak in all her subjects. All borderline cases. I started the first draft since last Aug and have since revised it 3 times basically because we are behind the revision plan and have to do away or shorten some of the revision time. Sigh… I do hope the homework or the revision done at school will help her. Poor DD…I know she is trying to do her part… blaming myself for not doing enough much earlier. -

My son is in P6 this year so I don't have a proof yet whether my strategy is correct or not. Maybe the other mummies here can chip in with advice. Here is my 2-cents.Jennifer: same here. English:
Oral: If your DD likes to read, Reading Aloud part should be alright. You may need to let her practice on Picture Description twice or thrice a week. For Conversation, during dinner you can chit chat with her on school, daily lives, etc (you can check Oral assessment book to find inspiration for conversation topics). During oral exam, tell her to relax and chit chat with the examiner as if she is chit chatting with you.
Listening Comprehension: This should be the easiest to score. Just need to concentrate. Don't day dream and don't get distracted.
Situational Writing: As long as she got all the information correct, she should get some marks. This is easier to score than Continuous Writing. The challenge is to do it within 15 minutes so she would have enough time for Continuous Writing.
Continuous Writing: This is a difficult part. I think as long as the story is logical, it should get some marks. For example, if there is a loud noise in the library, don't write about robbery in the library because unlikely there will be robbery in a place that don't carry money.
Paper 2: Focus on MCQ. Forego Synthesis and Transformation and Comprehension Cloze because there are too many varieties in Synthesis and Transformation and once there is grammar or spelling mistake, the whole score is gone. For Comprehension Cloze, there are just too many words to learn. Can't cram everything in 4 months. For Comprehension Open-Ended, practice on questions which answers are obvious (can be found in the text).
Mathematics: Focus on MCQ and problem sums 3 marks and below. They are the easiest to score.
Science: Again, focus on MCQ. Open-Ended questions are difficult because not only need to know the key words, but need to know the answering technique as well.
Chinese:
Oral: Reading Aloud should be the easiest to score. I cannot advice you on Picture Description and Conversation because we are potato family so my son is really weak on these.
Listening Comprehension: Again, need to concentrate. If concentrate, should be able to get some scores.
Compo: Since my son is weak in Chinese, we have decided that he will write the Picture Compo (kan tu zuo wen). In the exam, we told him no need to even read what ming ti zuo wen is. Sorry, I cannot give you more advice on this because my son is terrible in Chinese compo.
Paper 2: Focus on MCQ. Sorry, I cannot give you more advice than this as I am also weak in Chinese so I don't really know what he is doing
I hope this helps. However, each child is different so what works with my son may not work with your daughter.
Btw, the Science textbook is insufficient to prepare our children for PSLE. It will help a lot if your daughter read the Science PSLE Guide. We use the orange colour one by Marshall Cavendish. -
ngl2010:
The list is very comprehensive. Thanks ngl2010 for sharing. Perhaps I'll just add for oral/ compo. My DS is weak in Chinese oral and compo so I get him to read compo for oral practice, hoping to kill 2 birds with one stone. At the same time exposé him to words he doesn't know.

Goodluck8:
It is just a misunderstanding. Good luck 8 referred to her DD's school's cohort. National performance is about the same every year. This is what the teacher told the class after CA1. The teacher comparing how many students having A* for certain subjects in previous year and this year A* reduce to how many. And the teacher every time emphasied to my DD's class that this year standard is not as good as last year.
That's why parents started to discuss this topics. And we tends to console ourselves that we are only competing with the 'snake' kids.
If i sound insulting in the previous post, i apologise. Maybe i did not really explain why did i quote that. -
DS got back his Chinese mock paper today. Generally the class didn't do well. Tmr is the Chinese paper and teacher told them 'Tmr u all just aim to pass'. So demoralising.
Thus to fulfil that, DS came back, instead of bucking up, he started to do frivolous stuff instead of revising. :stompfeet: -
Half the class 'swear' after the Maths paper 2...sounds like it is another tough paper. DS say he cannot do 4 :yikes: problem sums..win liao!
I just finished MT revision with him...'pang chez'!
But I must say he is quite a good boy..doesn't want to stop when I offer him earlier

I dislike such teacher! Last year DS science teacher told the class that all of them will go POLY because they are weak. Hello! they are only 12 years old and she has determined their road for them! I almost want to confront the principal for having such unforgiving teacher! Luckily, the class did better than her expectation and that shut her mouth!

Sigh... Sometimes I hope teachers hold their tongues. We were at PTM in January and the Chinese teacher told us that our children had written and pasted their goals for Chinese PSLE on the class wall. Then, she told us that she will counsel our children to write lower goals. It was so disheartening :mad:DS got back his Chinese mock paper today. Generally the class didn't do well.
