      711mum:
      Hi,

For kids like DD who does not have a strong foundation in CL yet doing HCL is a real challenge be it 命题 or 完成文章. At times she is still using \"direct translation\" from English in her compo writing :faint: but I know she is trying her best so I won't pick on it.

On average, I observe HCL consume fair bit of DD's time or rather she spent longer hours in getting HCL homework done, the amount of practices DD is getting seems more than other subjects. I can't help but to think if it is a wise choice to let her drop HCL at the end of P5 to focus on the core subject although DH is against my idea. Anyway, still have up to year end before taking a decision.

        711mum & Jedamum,

Hiaz… we’re on the same boat. Actually prior to SA1, DS cried one day while doing his HCL school work. I took the chance and talk to him. During the talk, I suggested dropping out HCL if he finds it too taxing. Surprisingly he said NO. He said he has started it since January and he doesn’t want his effort go into waste. He then requested for a one to one tutor. I didn’t agree with him immediately but told him to let me have sometime to think thru’ because he basically has no more time for tuition. After discussed with DH, I decided to put on hold. Thus, told DS to wait till how SA1 result turns out. If he fails, I’ll find him a tutor.

Now, I’m waiting to see how he fares in HCL…

          Dreamgear:

I mean cl and hcl are not separate classes, right? So if take cl alone, will the workload drop a lot?

I just feel that this one or two points could come in very handy when comes to schools posting....
Pupils taking HCL need to stay back after sch for HCL lessons, once or twice per wk, depending...(at least for my gal's sch and some others i know)

For applications to SAP sec schs, HCL bonus points certainly comes in handy....
some of my gal's sch or classmates who had successfully gotten in, thanks to the addition of their HCL bonus points...

Even if u do not want to apply for SAP sec schs, HCL lessons would help to raise the standard of the pupils' normal CL....

i would say if the child does not seriously dislike/hate CL, GO for it.....

Just to share. When my dd was in P5, I decided not to opt for HCL as I felt that she was spending too much time on Chinese compared to the other subjects. After PSLE, when we were applying for IP schools, we realised that most of these schools has HCL as a compulsory subject… there was no normal Chinese. My dd has a hard time studying secondary level HCL. The jump from normal Chinese to HCL was huge. I reckon if she has taken HCL in P5 & 6, perhaps the transition may not have been so difficult.

My son did not take HCL in P5 & P6. He is doing HCL in Sec 1 now. I am happy that he could get at B for HCL. Chinese is his weakest subject & he only got A for PSLE. Maybe your dd's sec school HCL standard is higher. HCL standard may vary from school to school.

Just to share, my dd’s Chinese teacher told me that if the child fails her HCL in her PSLE, she will not have a chance to take HCL in her secondary school, but if a child did not take higher chinese but get good grades for her PSLE, she still will get a chance to offer higher Chinese in secondary school. Is this true?

As long as she get Top 10% of the PSLE cohort, she will entitle to take higher Chinese, or else she may need an entrance test for higher Chinese to qualify.

My boy did not take HCL in P5 & P6. He was in the top 10% of his PSLE cohort & he only gets A for CL. However, he is currently taking HCL in Sec 1.

If your child is within 11-30%, then she has to get at least merit for her HCL or A* for CL. She can continue to take HCL in Sec, if she is in the top 10%, regardless of her HCL result.

Thanks for your reply. I am still confused. Does it mean that even you fail higher Chinese but you are in the top 10% in the PSLE cohort, you can still take higher Chinese or you will have to take an entrance test?
