Secondary School CCA

No, he was 10, the youngest SNYO can take. Clarinet. He was doing grade 8. But he also stopped playing already leh... now don't even play twinkle twinkle little stars. He is into guitar now. Jamming with his primary school friends...
Oh yeah, it's much easier to get in using any instruments other than violins.phankao:
Sorry if I recall these facts wrongly, it was 6 years ago when my kid was in SNYO. May have changed now...
Your boy is now 15years old. The pianist? So he was in SNYO when 6 years ago, when he was 9??? Wah, Pro! They accept so young, ah? What instrument he played there? Cannot be piano, right? -
2ppaamm:
Not necessarily a CCA on it's own with most schools. Eg. the pianist in my dd's sch choir, she is an MEP student with voice as her 2nd instrument and has an advanced abrsm grade in voice too. They don't always use a pianist anyway, since the choir often sings acapella. And for important events like SYF, this \"pianist\" would sing, not be the pianist. Pianists(or rather accompanists) are engaged instead. So she is actually in choir, and not the accompanist for the choir.
Aha! I just found the CCA. She was asked to audition for choir as the pianist... never knew there's such a CCA. We thought it is great! Even if that is more practise, I think she will not dread it. Just to let you guys know there's this as well. -

O... I'd better tell her. But I think she'd be ok. She spent 5 years in the primary school choir. Thanks for telling me, didn't know this. :thankyou: -

Yep, violin is a string, much harder. I don't he has the patience for that...he was in the primary school band, and got interested in clarinet. So I asked an SSO clarinet player to teach him. He basically finished the grades in a year. Pianist (and violinist) have this kind of advantage. It's much easier to pick up other instruments once you have a string instrument as a base, I reckon. -
2ppaamm:
Ah, but it is easier to audition for most orchestras if the string instrument is one that is other than violin. That's why I said specifically \"other than violin\". Bc violin is sooooooo common. So, if we are talking about viola, cello or double bass, it's in demand. Eg, I think snyo takes in cellists/double bassists with low grades as long as they can play.

If I have another kid intending to pursue orchestra, I would then try other strings rather than violin. Why fight with the crowd? Still get in and experience the same kind of fun, friends and trips. -
thanks mathsparks for the link.

Hi everyone, just one week into new academic year and all tired already?
My DD1 school has started CCA selection and parents and daughter's wish are in conflict...how to resolve that? Maybe just let the school decide will do...
Parents wish she takes up MEP related CCA but she likes sports (especially badminton). While she has no formal training in sports...i think it is not a wise way to achieve points.
I always hear one must choose interest over anything else. In order to gain CCA points, I do not think head should always rule...must depend on heart also. Right?
(at this juncture, how i wish i am in the shoe of 2ppaamm...need not think too hard because she only goes for least time required, least participantion and least effort school CCA just to fulfill attendance requirement, 好羡慕啊) -
Infocomm is AVA right? I suppose it is not siong, but in terms of getting CCA points, is it good? TIA for any comments

My DD is also considering Softball -
What’s MEP related CCA? R these better choices?
