Hi, I attended a talk at MOE Excel Fest 2013 about Preparing Your child for primary school seminar. The principal from Horizon Primary School gave this important advice at the seminar. She shared that there was a student who wanted to study in a particular school but both the parents have different views. The child likes School A, Mum likes School B and Dad likes school C. Guess in the end which school is the child attending happily today? Answer is School A. The parents respect the decision of the child. I do not have any idea if School A is being referred to Horizon Primary but the way the principal advised made sense and she gave pointers on selecting a primary school which can be found on MOE website on How to select a primary school for your child. I have friends who advised me that if the child is smart and a fast learner, wherever the child studies, the child can cope well. If the child is not academically-inclined, it will add pressure to the child to cope.

Ultimately, all parents want their children to be happy and I value my child’s happiness a lot. Being prepared for Primary 1 doesn’t mean that the child has to do piles of worksheets or assessement books or test papers to get ahead and gain an edge over others in primary 1. I believe that a child should be happy and enjoy learning, that will lead to the child being a more self-directed learner.

I'm curious abt the background of why the child likes School A.

        Share my experience.

As I have mentioned before, I applied for 4 schools to PV. Now the first school that replied my application, I had to undergo a PV balloting session. Normally I would not involve my kid in such matter becos it is not confirm will get. I do not want to let my kid think this is the school that he/she will go to.

BUT maybe I was too excited, I brought the whole family there LOL. We were not successful in the balloting exercise BUT somehow dd1 like the school LOL. So she would tell me she wanted to study in THAT school. This was not possible becos failing the PV balloting there was no chance to get into the school. The only slight possibility was shifting house to be within 1km and even with that move balloting is guaranteed too. Which means no guarantee to get in LOL. We did not move house to be within 1km to the school.

Moving on........The current school replied positively to my PV application and I was successful in the P1 registration. DD1 is happy in her school, she has her fav trs, etc.

I'm surprised that you did PV at 4 schools. How did you do it? Can share your PV experience like what you did? Thanks. I did not do PV as I could not decide which school to select back then.

😂 I applied to 4 schools but PVed in 1.

1st school - failed PV balloting
2nd school - passed interview but the commitment was too high for me at that stage so I have to decline.
3rd school - accepted my application and schedule wise fit into my schedule. Plus hubby could help too
4th school - replied after I accepted 3rd school so I had to decline.

I helped out in the school library, help with Eng resources, helped in school learning journey.

Hi all, my first time here. Need advice please.

Would like to register my girl in South View Primary as we stay less than 1km but we are under Phase 2C so chances very low since it is a popular school. Should I still take my chance or should i go for other less popular school?

South View and De La Salle are the most competitive schools to get into during Phase 2C in Choa Chu Kang. South View, in particular, required balloting within 1km since we started tracking in 2006. There were times in recent years where South View was oversubscribed by up to 4 times. The number of places left for Phase 2C ranges from 8%-25%. South View's vacancies have dropped over the last few years by up to 3 classes (90 students), and this contributed to the competitiveness for its places.

If you are a betting person, the odds might excite you. Personally, I would look elsewhere while keeping an eye on South View in case a miracle happens this time around.

                  Hi fellow users,

I am in the process of enrolling my daughter for Primary 1 in 2014. At present, we are living in Australia and may return to Singapore in the second half of next year or even early 2015. Whilst we are very keen to stay in Australia, very much depends on the job market in the coming years.

I have been notified to enrol my daughter under Phase 2C. We are within 1km from four primary schools - Unity, De La Salle, Kranji and Yew Tee. My application process is either to send documents to the pupil placement section OR direct to the preferred schools.

Herein lies our predicament - my little girl is going to school in Australia and enjoys her school environment. They have small classes and everything is taught in English in a highly discovery oriented manner, unlike Singapore classrooms that are more structured and rigid? She speaks very much with an Australian accent and cannot read Chinese at all. We are looking for a school that is not necessarily academically inclined but more towards developing morals and civic mindedness.

                  All suggestions/comments are welcomed.

                  Many thanks!

Normally we would advise parents to go down to each of the schools they are evaluating to personally experience the logistics, environment, students, teachers and principals. However, for obvious reasons, this cannot apply to you. Your only choice would be to evaluate each of the schools' websites, or to visit KiasuParents.com's Parents' Networking Groups for each of these schools found here:

You might pick up some pointers from parents who already have children there.

Dear parents, would appreciate your advice: I have heard some friends mention that nanyang primary school work is not as vigorous as other school like Tao nan or aitong or st Andrew. Is this true? I would like to enroll my dd to a good school with good values but at the same time, hope she can have a 'childhood'.

Nanyang Pri not vigorous?! My niece is there. On the first parents briefing, the principal assured parents their child can only but do well there, no need worry; parents are encouraged to let their children play instead. Then I hear even children of doctors drop out at and P3 &P4 bec of the stress. Do your maths.

IMHO, Nanyang is the most prestigious and top primary school. Make sure you put square pegs into round holes. If your child is just average, avoid NYPS. I applied to NYPS as PV and was rejected. Today, my child is in CCPS. She is happier there. Top in class, top in standard. Why be a small fish in a big tank, when you can be a big fish in a small tank? Have a thought, your choice. Btw, my 3rd child is registering for P2A1 st Andrews Junior and no, they are not vigorous.

Thanks for the info. Got to think hard on it. . :scared:
