books for 10-12 year old boys

That part of geylang east is safe lah…if you are referring to the roaming chickens. Should you go to that penang restaurant to eat (it’s quite near the mrt station), from the station, just walk diagonally across a field towards the library. it’s a bit quiet but definitely safe. just watch out for the cyclists on the road.

Thanks, Jedamum. Got that book but DS have not touch it cos busy reading 39 clues.
Shan,Shan:
My 12 yrs old son likes Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket as well.
Now he is into 39 Clues series.
My 11 yr old is not into 39 Clues.
Lemony has a new book - All the Wrong Questions.
Yes, DS also enjoyed reading The Indian In the Cupboard series by Lynne Reid Banks. -

Which one did you read? The first book about the 4 kids? Or the prequel about Benedict's education?Hquek

Like it?
IF your first book was the prequel, then I strongly advise you to start with the first in the benedict society series - it will tell you how the children came to be together and there is a little twist at the end.
From there, the story will follow on although they are not tightly intertwined. For me, I'll be ok to go on to the 3rd book. Just be aware that they may make some reference to what happened in prior books (but not that impt to me).
btw, i found another author 'Ellen Raskin'. She wrote stuff like \"The Westinghouse game\", \"Where's Noel, I mean Leon\", Tattooed Potato, Figgs and Phantom etc. Borrowed the books from NLB. The cover on most of her books look quite psychedelic, like 1960s. Many of her stories are mystery mystery type. Apparently Raskin is an illustrator who later on moved to writing. She illustrated the first edition of 'A wrinkle in time'. Of all the books, Westinghouse was my favourite, followed by Tattooed Potato.
Amazing the stuff she can come up with. her books are quite simple reads generally but it's not for young kids. According to some website, she writes for the adults in kids rather than just appeal to kids in general. Eg like the drawings at the beginning of each chapter in the Noel, Leon book....examine it closely for clues on what's going to happen in the chapter. -
Thanks hquek.
What you mean by Raskin, ‘her books are quite simple reads generally but it’s not for young kids.’? Suitable for 11 year olds?
I finisdd the first book Benedict series yesterday, and tormentdd my boy with threats to give spoilers! Ha! Started the third book this morning, before I went library and found the second book! So lucky! Will put third book on hold first, as you were right about them recapping previous stuff. It also started more on constance abilities.
I managed to borrow the prequel too. But I find the four kids more charming than Benedict. -
hi Jedamum,
Ummm, that was a comment I read and quite agreed with. Although Raskin’s books are meant for kids, but it takes a certain amount of maturity to read through. Like the Figgs and Phantom book…I’m still confused by what went on toward the end. It seems there are deeper stuff inside her books but I caught no ball. Or maybe put it that her books are a bit ‘out there’?
Try the Westinghouse first - I liked it best becos it made a bit more sense than the rest. Some bits are really funny.
Glad you liked Benedict Society. Looking back, I think book 1 was the most nerve wrecking and exciting - there is a lot of discovery about the characters. I almost fell off when they revealed stuff about Constance in the last bit. Thought that was a bit odd but then I’m not a genius. Love the way Constance went around getting her own way, the rest of us mortals can only dream about saying half the stuff she did.
Trying so hard to remember what book 2 is but quite fail - can still recall a bit of book 3. Somehow the first book is always the best? The prequel was pretty excellent, too bad they don’t tell us what happened to his friends thereafter.
Was mulling why I haven’t started DS on HP series. I think I will continue to hold off for a while - the latter bits talk about BGR and teenage angst which I’m not keen to expose him to just yet. Best to stick to these fun and funny books at present. -
My son read Narnia, Harry Porter, Sharpe series (Bernard Cornwell) & Adeline Yen Mah books when he was in P5 & P6. Hardly seen his stud for his PSLE, except doing doing his homework & reading. He is already in Sec 1.
