All About Learning French

just to see see look look n feel the french culture… not really picking up the lang per se…
agree that 3rd lang is a long term commitment… i am just testing water to see if my child is keen in languages n foreign culture… -
How about this alternative ... go France for holiday
best way to appreciate culture ! Go Lourve - may discover fine arts appreciation and perhaps go on a Dan Brown trial which may inspire kid to read and be a writer as well? -

I doubt a kid could tell it out of a few days or months. To appreciate a culture thru the native language assumes mastery of the language.just to see see look look n feel the french culture... not really picking up the lang per se...

You don't get a taste of French by attending the holiday course unless you send your boy to the summer camp in France whereby your child is oblige to speak French and mingle with the local.

Totally agree with you. Further I observed that while (my) kids learn to speak fluently within 1 year, they really express themselves freely only almost 2 years later.
My problem is how to maintain their French.

This might be the right place for the question. Just let if be before I find the right one.
My kids stayed 2+ years in France and learned French. Now back home for 1 and 1/2 years. While they make progress in English etc., they are losing their French. I guess kids back from other countries exprience the same problem.
I sent them to Alliance francaise before. But it’s stopped this year because my son is on P6 (PSLE!). I try to speak to them in French but not on a regular basis.
Any good suggestions? And any French-speaking kids you know of? -
Hi anyone let their kids try out the french classes at alliance francaise? any feedback and whether their kids’ interest can be sustained?
-
I sent dd to Alliance Francaise for French lessons when she was in P2 for slightly over a year.
In the end, I pulled her out because I felt she wasn't learning much. After the lesson each week, I would ask what she had learnt and her reply was 'Don't know!'
I think she was having too much fun making friends and playing with them in class.
The teacher had quite a laissez-faire attitude; although my girl was not progressing, there was completely no feedback from him. -

hi hermes173, thanks for the feedback! r all the teachers like that? my concern is that the kid's interest cannot be sustained given that there's no exposure and opportunity for her to use. can only hope whatever she learns, she will store in her database and pick it up easily next time when she's older.

in any case, i just checked and no vacancy at the moment. have to wait till next jan b4 registration starts again. i m quite surprised the classes r so popular. :? -
I can’t really say if all the teachers are like that.
For all I know, the other teachers could be more responsible.
And also, I think dd played a part too. She was too young to know better and treated the lessons like play sessions.
