New Woodlands South MRT station along new Thomson Line.
SINGAPORE — The Land Transport Authority (LTA) today (Aug 23) said that it has awarded a S$144-million contract for the construction of the Woodlands South MRT station, which is scheduled to be completed in 2019.
The Woodlands South station, which was first announced by Minister for Transport Lui Tuck Yew in August last year, will be situated at the junction of Woodlands Ave 1 and Woodlands Dr 16, close to Christ Church and Woodgrove secondary schools. According to the LTA release, the Singapore Sports School is a three-minute walk from the underground station.
When the planned Thomson Line is completed, commuters will take only 45 minutes to get from Woodlands to Gardens by the Bay via the Thomson Line, 25 minutes less than the current travel time. http://www.todayonline.com/singapore/new-mrt-station-woodlands-due-2019 -
I am from Hong Kong. My son aged 13 really loves swimming and holds few age records in swimming in HK. I am thinking of sending him to study in Singapore Sports School so that he can get a balance in swimming and academic. He is now studying in a famous secondary school and the competition in academic is very high!

Hi, anyone here who might be enrolling their kids into Singapore Sports School next year?
My son is very keen to join and as a concerned parent, I have my reservations.
The post in this thread have been encouraging, but I think it best to get fresh feedback.
And would anyone know if the fees will be subsidised?
Or how hard would it be to get a scholarship?
My son is keen on IB, Track and Field. -
Hi dlye,
I share the same concern as you, fees and others such as food, their well being in the dormitory etc.
I understand the FAS (Financial Assistance Scheme) is based on household income. I would also like to know if it is strictly based on the figures on their website or they are flexible enough to approve on a case by case basis. I’m also interested to know how easy it is to attain scholarship (I understand it is based on sports results and not academic results). Another sum of money I’m concerned about is overseas competition fees. I understand parents have to fork out certain percentage of the total competition fees each time they compete overseas. I would like to know on average how many times a year? It may work out to be a substantial sum of money and we are talking about a commitment of four to six years. I hope to get a very clear picture of it before deciding if I could afford it if my child is selected.
I have been trying to get these information but so far I have not been able to speak with any parent whose children is in the sports school. Hopefully would be able to gather these information here.
Another area of my concern is the many meals that they eat everyday in school. How nutritious are they? They are at an important stage of growing up. Eating right and nutritiously is important.
I understand the number of subjects the students study in Sports School is minimal. Wonder will this affect their career path in future if they choose not to pursue a career that is sports related.
Can anyone shed some light on our concern here? -
Hi Aurora,
FAS should be hard and fast as it is needs based.
1. Frequency and estimated Travelling cost will be good to know as well (we intend to go along where possible)
During the open house we spoke to a parent, but not about costs. At that point I wasn't sure that my son was considering / would qualify....But based on his recent performance.. Hopes are higher.
the kids generally look happy to be there and I am confident that their food is based on sports nutritional needs.
I suppose if no one else can provide more info, we would have to wait for later stages to get info direct from the school.aurora1231:
