You could say I am veey...mark-driven. I often quarrel with my best friends over marks.
one consolation is that you won't know all your marks for every subject.Jennifer:
just had a stressed out crying session cos found out that usually 1 more mark in maths (which I am good at) is worth less than 1 more mark in chinese (which I suck at). Because the SD for maths is usually higher than that of CL.. :gloomy: I am a sad girl.
Hm, I dunno if I should be saying this: u seem to be very mindful of marks. Kinda not very healthy mentality.
At your age, u should enjoy learning.
anyway, what's there to quarrel about? does quarrelling makes your teacher give an extra mark to u? or deduct marks from your friends? is your friendship only worth that few marks?

Just let her try a few challenging questions from other schools or past year PSLE papers. Don't have to do a lot. Just a few to have a feel of it so that she know what to expect. Is most of the school setting easy paper or tough paper for their prelim?
My DD school set a very easy maths paper this year( SA1 and prelim). Some students said that it is more easy than last year P5 paper. Parents tend to worry that DC tends to put down their guts as they think they are good enough and refuse to do more. Secondly, we also worry that will they be able to cope well if the PSLE paper is tougher than they think. Were they panic and break down on the spot? And cant continue the rest of questions properly? Cause i heard such case before, happened two year ago. -

ngl2010, my child only works til 9pm every night. After 9pm, it is no longer effective.
My DD close shop at 9 pm as well. She will keep looking at the clock if it is 9.01 and remain restless. No point squeezing them if they cannot focus.icy_mama:
I know this question had been asked many times. What time does your child sleep during weekday and weekend? I am getting worried here as I have been hearing children that sleep at 2am. DS has a classmate that sleeps at 1.30am each night and she is doing better than DS. Sorry I am kiasu here (but isn't this kiasu parents forum?).
somedays my dd can tahan till 11plus almost midnight. most days, 9plus. i think most importantly is on your ds. u'll know when his brain isn't functioning anymore and needed to rest. i'll try to push a bit more somedays if there are more work to be done. then again, mental health also very important. don't want her to burn out so soon. -

Thanks everyone. When I get my results in November I will post it and give credit to all of you who motivated me.
P.s. 31 DAYS MORE!!!!

dd came back telling me that her maths prelim is a killer. This was also shared by other mates and 2 other mums also came to tell me. I found myself telling them that maybe school is trying to engage scare tactic to wake them up for PSLE. So was surprised when dd told me her results as well as her class performance. Alot in the high 80's and 90's range. Now I am wondering if the kids are trying to manage expectations. But what was very encouraging was dd told me that she was one of the 3 in her class who got a particular question correct. In addition, she thinks that she has overcome some of her weakness areas such as speed questions. Is most of the school setting easy paper or tough paper for their prelim?

Another observation was also their EL teachers were very stingy for oral and compo marks during prelim. I think she is still trying to ask the kids to strive harder and there is still room for improvement.
Last year, I met a distant cousin during a wedding. I gathered that her son studied in some neighbourhood school in bedok area. She told me that her son always get 90+ for his maths. I was impressed as 90's is not easy. But during PSLE (last year), he was shocked to see the kind of questions and he couldn't answer them. I don't know what is the outcome as I only saw her during the wedding and that was before PSLE result was released.
Personally, we let the kids do other top school papers since upper primary to get a feel. For dd, I also expose her to those onsponge questions for specific topics. We are wondering what to focus in the final lap. dh felt that dd should take out all the corrections she did and revise. I, on the other hand, felt there is no harm doing those papers as from time to time, she is still expose to something new in another school's paper and she is still revising what she is good at and at the same time, determine if she has overcome her weak areas. But we both agree, she should still work on her weak areas.
We usually let dd do the paper and mark right away. After that, she is supposed to work on her corrections by herself. If she still can't solve it, she will seek dh or her enrichment teacher's help. One learning we had was from nephew who sat for PSLE last year. He was from top 5 pri school in Spore and did around 210+ for PSLE. bil shared with us that though nephew did paper practices, they didn't make it a habit to mark his work and to correct him. Hence, my guess is that he might still be making the same mistakes without realising it. -
MMM:
Easy or tough paper, both have their advantages and disadvantages. For DD, test paper fatigue has set in. Her class prelim maths results range from 50+ to 98. Her own score is her new personal lowest. Her maths teacher is the HOD and since beginning of the year have been loading them with practice test papers non stop. Looking at the test paper and the class results, I think the children are tired. The paper was not that difficult. So far given her school workload, I have been hands off. For me in this last lap, I am looking to motivate her to work smarter and will be keeping close tabs on her revision similar to MMM's strategy. Time too for me to knuckle down and work with her.

Why canβt my school set tougher Maths papers!? After today, I did 2 careless mistakes, so my maximum is between 96-98β¦But all of my friends seem to get EVER question correct.
