I cant get a class for my boy for ICR advanced program (think it should be book 6 onwards).

If your kids now in book 5 going to book 6 & the class is not full, pls let me know. I am looking at class starting 7.30pm weekdays & morning class weekend in kovan ctr. But was told full. The schedule is not display to parents so I have difficulty in asking for the next available slot... Very difficult to make decision. What should I do? The admin says I have to wait for half a year for the class & not guaranteed with a place.
Try calling woodlands civic centre branch.

I am not sure Why your centre work differently. Book 1 to book 6 (last book) is a 1 year structured programme. When you enrolled in this particular programme, the class slot is allocated to your child. The teacher, day and timing were fixed. Even have child drops out before the programme end, class size become smaller, the class still have to carry on without recruiting new students. My DS 's class was only left 2 students nearing last Term. Most kids had started P1 and thus dropped the programme earlier. There were few lessons conducted as 1-1 because his only classmate was MC.: )

Speak to the recep and clear your doubts. Good luck!

          Thanks for the reply.

The teacher suggested for 6mths advanced program. As you mentioned it is a 1 yr structured program, I have difficulty in enroling my boy coz he doesn’t need to join the program from the beginning.

            I see. That's make sense now 😂
Looks like you have no other choice but to put on their wait list. Hope you hear from them soon!

              Hi

Any comments on ICR AMK branch or Bt Timah/ King’s Arcade branch?

I recently withdrew my son from a phonics school because they claimed he cannot follow because he can’t write well. I also discovered that they did not teach him the correct skills to blend words phonetically. I am now exploring whether to send him to ICR or MindChamps.

              Any comments on either?

              Thanks

                  Janice2012:

My son started ICR program at his 5 and now in book 4. He progresses in reading well, but struggling with spelling.

Although teacher says spelling is not the focus, she always randomly chooses 10 out of 40-60+ words to test children. I asked teacher to narrow down the spelling word list but teachers refused to do so. The admin also said reading, rather than spelling is their focus.
But the prob is they still have the test every week!
I've been always struggling to prepare my son for the 40-60+ words every week. but overwhemed with so mAny words, my son cannot do well.
I suspect if such an approach can really help my son learn any new words / spelling ultimately. Or just ruin his confidence or interests in English...
Any parents have the same concern? any suggestions to cope with the pressure?
                  Thks!

My DS has completed the programme. His centre also didn't narrow down no. of spelling words. We have to go through all but only being tested by handful, due to time constrain I believe. In later part, my DS's class was bugging the teacher to test more words instead because all of them enjoy doing it! FYI, book 6 is toughest and required more work. Spelling was just a breeze when they hit book 6. I would say take it easy 🙂

my DS is 6, gg to P1 next year. started paniking and sent him to ICR abt 2 mths ago. just checked his book - he's only at Book 2! haha, seems like a lot to catch up. just to share, he's at ICR parkway, and the teacher will only mark out 6 - 9 words for spelling every wk. maybe his is still the \"baby level\" bah 😓

btw, he's progressed quite a bit since doing ICR and i intend to stop him once he goes to P1. just wanna check how many books are there when the \"programme is completed\"? how many years / months does the \"programme\" take? Is it ok to stop once he can read confidently?

                  TIA!

Your son will be completed book 5 in Nov if he is currently in book 2. Book 6 is also called ICR Advanced Stage. 6 months course to completion. Dec is school holiday, the centre will be off for a month. He will only start book 6 in Jan 2014. It is not compulsory to complete whole course (book 1 to 6 - 1 year course) thus you may withdraw him at any term.

thks lovinglife for sharing! may i know what is covered in Book 6? (if i understand you correctly, Book 6 itself will take 6 months from Jan - Jun?)

i also heard comments that ICR will not be good enough for pri schools. need to go Lorna Whiston or Learning Lab. being a kiasuparent, anyone can share your experience?

Book 6 is an exercise book containing basic grammar, sentence structure & spelling list. Every week, the child will read a small unmarked booklet comprising of 4 stories and 5 comprehension questions to be answered. More spelling words. 1 chapter story book was given upon class commencing for the kids to read out in class.
